PSA to all you recruiting Debbie Downers (long)

Jul 26, 2018, 3:26 PM

Listen up!

Today is July 26th. I'm not sure if you are aware or not, but national signing day is over HALF A FRIGGIN YEAR AWAY! At this point last year....

- We "only" had 11 guys committed
- We wouldn't secure an OL commitment for another 5 months
- Jackson Carman coming here was beyond a pipe dream
- Justyn Ross was bound for an in-state school
- Derion Kendrick had not yet earned his 5th star
- Nobody had any idea what direction our DB recruiting was going

The chicken littles were out in full force all cycle, yet SOMEHOW we managed to end up with one of our most talented classes in school history.

But how could this be??

Maybe, just maybe, our coaching staff...who is coming off a 7th consecutive 10-win season, and 3rd straight conference championship/playoff appearance, actually knows what they are doing?

Perhaps the coaches that brought home a national title somehow know how to evaluate talent, and almost just as importantly, kids who fit within the culture of the program & offensive/defensive schemes that we run?

This year's class is totally different from what we have seen in the past couple recruiting cycles. For the first time in a very long time, we are set to bring in a high-volume of commitments. The coaches anticipate taking AT LEAST 10 more guys before it's all said and done.

This is a stark contrast to last year and the year before, where numbers were tight and we honed in on a select few number of elite targets. That just can't be the case every single year (unless you are Alabama) and at some point, a program needs a good number of decent, but not quite elite, developmental prospects to help build depth at positions of need. These are guys who the coaches feel like they can turn into real contributors in 2-3-4 years.

This, folks, is how you sustain a program. We may not end up landing 6 5* guys like we did last year, but we have a huge class full of quality (& underrated) players with a few true studs mixed in. When it's all said and done in February, we will have a top 10 class once again. Bank on it.

Now allow CU2013 to let you in on a little secret: the 2020 cycle is shaping up to be a combination of the 2 years before - we will have the numbers to sign 25+ guys, and many of which, are going to be the elite prospects that we have come to expect. Our lone commitment is a 5* DL and we are set to score a commitment from another top 150 prospect within the next week.

So look - is the staff above scrutiny & criticism? Of course not. OL recruiting has indeed been a huge area of concern this cycle, and if we are sitting here in February with nothing but muppets to show for it, then sure, that would be grounds for them to catch some heat. But for Christ's sake, let's at least allow the recruiting cycle to conclude before we go about crying over the 2019 class.

And one last thing....the TI writers likes to use the phrase, "It's about who you get, not who you miss out on." Let's make something clear - a kid who cites a Clemson offer is not the same thing as a Clemson "target." I'm going to call out TigerNet Recruiting® here on this one. Running a banner on the home page about a certain DB "target" who we stopped recruiting months ago committing elsewhere does nothing but stir the pot among all the Negative Nancys on this site. Travon Walker picks UGA? That's different - he has been a top target of ours for 3 years. If Andrew Booth picks Auburn, that too is grounds for a mention because they are guys at the top of the recruiting board. But Tigernet doesn't need a big, breaking-news type of headline every time a kid we have recruited at some point picks another school. Maybe a thread on the message board, but a home-page banner seems over the top.

The fact is, if we really wanted Battle, we would have pushed for him (and gottten him) months ago. But we currently have 4 DBs publicly committed, 1 silent commit set to announce next month, and 1-2 spots remaining for Booth and another potential big fish or late season surprise (a la Mario Goodrich.) It's a numbers game and we can't take everybody.

TL/DR: trust the coaches, let the cycle play out, save the criticism for February 6 2019.

DT is hard on all of us. Don't make it worse by jumping the gun & closing the books on the 2019 recruiting class before the year 2019 even comes around. Thank God we are getting close to fall camp...

That is all, Go Tigers!

to compete for the next few Nattys.

Dabo is bringing in the next crop to raise up and compete.

You can't always bring in the blue chippers.

Sometimes you have to bring in the 3-4 star guys and redshirt them.

I learned this playing NCAA football on Xbox. So trust me.

Jul 26, 2018, 3:50 PM

Also, the 2020 class is one of the most impressive classes I've seen. I would rather cover long-term needs with potential red shirt guys this year, then amp it up next year to grab some of those immediate impact - Sammy, ETN, types. Hopefully we cover our needs, but next year's class should be special. Especially if we get Uiagalelei.

Note on that, the No.2 QB for 2020 commits to USC which just happens to be DJ Uia. other top school. Bodes well for us. Maybe I'm looking too far ahead, but I remember seeing Sammy, TL and DW4 highlights after their junior years and just hoped they'd work out for us too!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Speaking of ETN....

Jul 26, 2018, 4:11 PM

Good post. Okay, we are or should be considered right up there with Alabama. Why does it seem so much easier for them to load up with top recruits than us?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: PSA to all you recruiting Debbie Downers (long)

Jul 26, 2018, 4:20 PM

Sadly we're not considered right up there with Bama just yet. Give it another 3 or 4 years of sustained performance at this level and we will be for sure. We've been on their level the past 3 seasons, but they've been the standard for the past almost 10 seasons. Even when they don't go to the NCG, they still bring in the guys to take them there the next year.

I see that in our future, but I think it will take at least another 2 years at this elite level. Our main concern should be UGA snatching prospects. I think with BV being stable and our coaches overall staying put will separate us from the other guys who have new coordinators every 2 or 3 years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With Apologies

Jul 27, 2018, 6:44 AM

That's a pile of doggie dung. Clemson is toe to toe with Bama in recruiting. Not getting a recruit doesn't mean you aren't competing. The prospects and their families may use history as a barometer, but Tiger fans need to be in the present...and the present is Clemson is elite...and the 'Best is yet to come'. To think otherwise is defeatist...in which case, hop on your cycle and exit stage left! ;) I, and others, will wish you bon voyage!

Some good points for sure

Jul 26, 2018, 5:52 PM

I’m definitely not losing sleep over Battle as I felt we had better targets on our board and if we wanted him we would’ve gotten him.

But there isn’t as much time left as the 6 months stated with the early signing period and a lot of guys signed early last year (90% of our class).

I was never expecting to replicate what we did with last year’s class this year especially with taking double the kids, but I was expecting more than what we have so far (emphasis on so far).

We definitely have some studs in the fold and will be adding more over the next few weeks so this class still has time to develop.

And the sky might not be falling but we’re getting to the point where it’s a little bit worrisome we’re not hitting on some of our needs for this class with guys we really wanted.

Not time to panic yet but I think a little criticism at this point isn’t completely unfounded.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Some good points for sure

Jul 27, 2018, 12:14 AM

Thank you BornATiger13. My thoughts exactly. The only point I was trying to make in an earlier thread on how we don’t make offers and then back off a kid. As J Scott said the boxes have been checked BEFORE an offer is given.

Yeah, the original post was good and probably will be potd, but wrong saying we don’t want a kid we have offered... because that’s sure not what I hear the coaches say.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

On the contrary...

Jul 27, 2018, 9:38 AM

With regards to Battle. We stopped recruiting him months ago because we have taken several other commits & have our sights set on other guys to fill the remaining 1-2 DB spots on our board

In other words, we didn't want him despite offering him long ago. Situations & circumstances change throughout the course of a recruiting cycle

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are right

Jul 27, 2018, 9:52 AM [ in reply to Some good points for sure ]

There is definitely grounds for concern in some certain areas, which is why I mentioned that in the original post. My point is that we should wait until the cycle has concluded to make a final assessment

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Its a good discussion

Jul 27, 2018, 11:08 AM

And yes we should wait until NSD to make a true judgment on this class, even into years 1 and 2 of their careers as they develop.

The part that I have a problem with is being called a fake fan for having the nerve to have some concern with the current situation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Its a good discussion

Jul 31, 2018, 6:10 PM

I don't think anybody is calling you a fake fan. And some concern is understandable. But half our fanbase was ready to jump off a cliff in December last year for having 0 OL commits, and we ended up flipping 1 guy and landing another "impossible" 5*

Re: PSA to all you recruiting Debbie Downers (long)

Jul 27, 2018, 12:02 AM

Since I’m a Debbie downer and as armsb says an a s s that needs to stay off tnet because I asked a question earlier about missing out on battle and quickly get told the coaches quit recruiting said offer and then you take issue with tnet staff on posting about a recruit we no longer wanted... then why do the coaches all say this:

https://theclemsoninsider.com/2018/07/24/when-clemson-offers-its-committed/

badge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: PSA to all you recruiting Debbie Downers (long)

Jul 27, 2018, 12:09 AM

Because that's exactly what it means... At the time. That does not mean they don't eventually see something they don't like, like a change in attitude...a feeling of entitlement as time wears on (please tell me you've lived long enough to watch a friend that seemed like a good person start getting attention they thought they never got, and they went from humble to being a jerk)....or a change in academic standings. Family in the ear trying to "get something" for you to choose one over another...a little birdie that gives some insider info that says a player is more of a home body, and you may want to keep options open.

There's tons of things that can change that. Committable doesn't mean the offer is good regardless the circumstances, nor does it mean they hold the offer forever. If you love Clemson, you make the choice.... You want to drag it out, understand, circumstances can change in either side.

Ok so what you’re saying is had he picked clemson we would have just had to suck it up? We weren’t going to jerk his offer or are you saying we already told these kids we weren’t going to accept that commit?

And btw- pushing 70 so yeah been around the block a time or two.

Re: PSA to all you recruiting Debbie Downers (long)

Jul 27, 2018, 12:23 AM

No, it means first come first served... At 70, sure you've heard that before. Clemson would look at their needs on the next guys to see if they have a spot they could wait till next year to get so they could take both. He chose to wait, Clemson got another guy on the radar.... If he committed to us, they'd have reevaluated where they could hold off. But would have took both if they had the room... Otherwise, first come, first served. BTW, my dad is your age. I'm not a young one myself.

all I’m saying is battle picked state yesterday. Immediately people get on here and say we had moved on from him. But had he picked clemson then people would have jumped on here and said wonderful commit. Can’t be both.

Jul 27, 2018, 9:49 AM [ in reply to Re: PSA to all you recruiting Debbie Downers (long) ]

No need to get sensitive

No, Clemson does not go out dispensing offers willy-nilly like a lot of other programs do. But that still doesn't mean that every player who cites an offer from Clemson has an offer that is truly committabl

The fact of the matter is, recruiting is a very fluid process, and circumstances change over the course of the cycle.

In Battle's case specifically, there may have been a point when the coaches might have accepted his commitment. He was high on Clemson early on, and we could have gotten him on board if we really wanted him. But we slow played him because we had others higher up on our priority list. We took several other players at his position, and now we are saving the last couple spots for other targets.

It's really not that complicated, and certainly not worth getting worked up over. I just think people tend to lose their minds when they see that a Clemson "target" has committed to another school when in reality, Clemson had moved on from them long ago, which is exactly the case here

All is well, Tiger brother!

Re: PSA to all you recruiting Debbie Downers (long)

Jul 27, 2018, 12:20 AM

I think people’s disappointments also comes from the fact that Clemson isn’t in a great position with a bunch of 5 star guys like last year. Jackson Carman was in-state or Clemson. Justyn Ross was in-state or Clemson. KJ Henry was a major Clemson lean the entire time.

I think this class is filling some needs. Clemson has a ton of depht at DE, so you can go sign developmental guys like Ruke and Cash. There’s good depht at LB, and they’ve landed a bunch of developmental guys so far, although Constantine looks great on film. The only thing that I’ve been disappointed with is OL, DT, and somewhat DB. Clemson needs immediate impacts at all 3 positions, especially DT and DB. Both positions are thin. So the coaches need guys to contribute early.

Booth would be huge, and Clemson is in a prime position to land him. Who knows about DT at this point. We have missed on a few guys that we would have landed in years past. But, you have to give credit to Kirby, Muschamp, and other coaches.

Bingos!!! That’s what I’m talking about but I’m a Debbie Downer and an a s s for discussing it and saying the pool of impact players is wearing thin this year.

I said earlier, some times we get beat or out recruited. It happens- doesn’t mean I don’t think Dabo’s the best thing ever to happen to clemson.
