Perimeter blocking

2

Apr 16, 2023, 11:37 AM

I know we had our second team WR’s playing our first team backers and secondary, but…

The perimeter blocking by the WR’s and TE’s was bad.

All these screens that were blown up were the result of bad perimeter blocking.

I know that the WR’s were mostly backups, so I’ll be a little forgiving there. (But I think blocking is something a backup WR should be good at)

What really fires me up is the TE’s. Thought they made some good catches as a group yesterday. But good grief! Their blocking on the perimeter in space was just bad.

That’s my takeaway from those 2 position groups. I’ll bet that’s a big focus area for the coaches heading into the summer. What do y’all think?

The WR position is easily the weakest. Not being able to get separation, unable to come down with 50/50 balls, dropping easy passes. And as you said, being unable to block on the perimeter and downfield. Yeah there are injuries, but what if there are still injuries in the fall? Considering the bad luck in the last three years, it feels more likely than not

The 1st offense went against the 1st defense yesterday.

White team had #1 offense and #2 defense and orange team had #2 offense and #1 defense.

I was really hoping the blocking would improve. The blocking looked just the same as the last few years.
When you don't have the speed to beat people deep the D backs play closer to the line of scrimmage.

The WR blocking seemed to look worse after Jeff Scott left the team in my opinion. Could it be the talent we have now can’t grasp the blocking aspect of the position or is it the position coach unable to get it out of them. Would like for someone to ask the coaches how much time is spent with the WR on blocking during practice. It was like they took pride in blocking when Scott was here. I was hoping to see an improvement in this area when Riley come on board.
