Does anyone know if our football program is re-evaluating

Aug 12, 2022, 1:59 PM

its current policies and procedures in light of our recent rash of injuries?

At some point, we can't simply blame these injuries on football being a violent and unpredictable sport.

If it were up to me - which thankfully, it isn't - I would take a very close look at every aspect of our program: practice routine, drills, weight room, recovery, nutrition, etc. Perhaps there are some answers there.

Injuries happen

The faster you run. The more hard you cut. The stronger and heavier you are. All these thing make injuries happen more. Look at other college and pro football teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I realize that injuries happen.

Aug 12, 2022, 2:04 PM

Isn't it also possible that there are things we could be doing better to help prevent them?

It would be an interesting study (and I have no clue where you'd find the data), on just how we compare or rank to the power 5 average.

That said, It'd be next to impossible to determine which teams may be using banned substances etc. I truly believe we'd compare favorable with others. Plus Dabo's an excellent manager and probably errs on the side of caution so as to NOT damage a kid's future. Jmho.

I have no reason to suspect that anything illegal

Aug 12, 2022, 2:23 PM

is going on.

But we know that all teams in major college football work very hard. They utilize the maximum allowed practice time. They all push themselves in the weight room, in agility drills, etc. They also focus on nutrition, proper recovery, high quality medical care, etc.

There are strict rules in place regarding the number of practices that can be held, as well as the proportion of those practices which can be full contact or partial contact. Therefore, injury rates should be fairly consistent from one team to another. When there are outliers, that should get our attention.

We know that we have so many advantages in place when it comes to the player experience at Clemson, which is why an injury rate that we are seeing recently seems all the more unexpected.

I'd also be interested in seeing how our injury rate these last couple of years compares to other power 5 programs.

Wow, a TD for saying Dabo runs a great program and that he runs a clean program and takes care of the kids... Unlike an uga that rushes a back 50 times a game until they're shredded. Oh well, guess someone doesn't like Dabo. Who knows.

Georgia hands the ball to the same back 50 times per game? Have you ever watched a UGA game?

Obviously, he’s thinking of Herschel Walker days. Georgia’s leading rusher a year ago averaged about 10 carries per game. I love Clemson, but some fans here have the brains of a 3rd grade special Ed student

Interesting: Brad has yet to make B2B NCAAT appearances

Aug 12, 2022, 8:16 PM [ in reply to That’s essentially what we did for decades in basketball. ]

despite seeing increased basketball spend during his tenure…

Both Barnes and Purnell went to 3 straight. Heck even Cliff Ellis went B2B and 3 out of 4.

Barnes did it in 4 seasons, OP in 7, and here we are headed into year 13 with Brad.

Clemson winning %'s and NCAAT appearances below:

Brad Brownell(2011-present) - 56.8% (3 NCAAT)
Oliver Purnell(2004-2010) - 61.1% (3 NCAAT in a row)
Larry Shyatt(1999-2003) - 45.5% (0 NCAAT)
Rick Barnes(1995-1998) - 60.7% (3 NCAAT in a row)
Cliff Ellis(1984-1994) - 58.1% (3 NCAAT in 4 years)

Aug 12, 2022, 2:05 PM

carefully and closely as Dabo fully understands their importance to the health of athletes. He knows how badly injuries can affect our success.

Sometimes it's just bad luck and hard to blame on an off-the-field reason.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm confident that they are followed closely.

Aug 12, 2022, 2:08 PM

I'm just curious as to what might've changed in terms of practice, strength/conditioning, recovery, etc. in the past couple of years which could possibly account for what we are seeing.

Re: Does anyone know if our football program is re-evaluating

Aug 12, 2022, 2:09 PM

If football was basketball, where really only 8-9 guys are needed, maybe a coach would have less live action in practice but it is not. A football has to hit, has to find at least a 2 deep roster and with all the freshmen that come in every year, the coaches have to find out what they can do. We will see if Dabo makes any changes but coaches coach and he probably will not change much if anything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I realize that football is a violent sport

Aug 12, 2022, 2:14 PM

and injuries can happen.

I'm not suggesting that Dabo needs to be the one making any changes. Perhaps it's something the strength and conditioning coaches need to re-evaluate. Maybe something the medical staff needs to look into. Or maybe we don't need to change anything at all, but hopefully it is being evaluated because it seems like we are seeing a lot more injuries lately than we did even a few years ago.

Aug 12, 2022, 4:26 PM

"seems like we are seeing a lot more injuries lately than we did even a few years ago."

We had 15 out (10 starters) in September of 2001, and that was the first thing I opened on a google search, and 5 of those were at WR. I have to admit though, I can't rule out that the injury bug comes around every 20 years.

I actually said:

An injury rate that is higher than would be suspected, which is maintained over a reasonable period of time to constitute a trend, isn't necessarily due to just random chance.

The indoor facilities, and maybe one or more outdoor fields have synthetic grass…

Pre-Covid I correlated the increase in injuries with resurfacing one of those fields…

That combined with the conditioning interruptions from the pandemic I believe are the culprits for last seasons injuries ….

Football is a violent and unpredictable sport. We had great luck during the 2 Natty win seasons with injuries. Now, not so much.

I suspect that’s all there is to it.

Clemson fans are very aware of our own injury issues, not so much with other teams.

Maryland was down to a 5th QB a few years ago.

It could be other issues, but I doubt it.

Why don’t they hire a faith healer to knock the players in the head, and heal them. He/she/it could be on the sidelines with holy water, and if someone got a broke bone or hamstring or even just a cramp he/whatever could run out and anoint them. They would only miss one play (because of the rules) and return to the game. You would think some teams would do that, but I don’t know of any that does. Not even Oral Robert’s Eagles. Why not?
