Pebble... that yellow house at the 11th green, I've been in it.

Feb 14, 2021, 5:27 PM

Was in Redwood City in early 90s to see a demo of a startup company's credit card processing software, for a possible interface to our system. Can't remember names, but it was owned by a young entrepreneur. Stayed over the weekend when he invited me down to a party at his dad's house at Pebble. First time seeing up close how "those people" live. #Unfreakingreal.

A drunk will run a STOP sign, but a stoner will wait for it to turn green.

We honeymooned in San Francisco, and walked out on the 18th green at Pebble. Security quickly greeted us with a "Hi can I help you?" and escorted us off

of a big bike brand held a dinner on one of the fairways. I am not a golf guy so I didn’t really get the gravity of the situation. It was beautiful.

We got ham slammed out there.

The whole Carmel/Pebble Beach area is beautiful

Cannot imagine actually living there.

a moment to talk about the fund raising portion of the weekend, and after a few self congratulatory comments they said they had raised $1.6 million "for the food banks of Monterey County." I laughed. Is that a thing? Do people out there run out of pate' and pomegranates? Beyond a certain point, socialism becomes redundant.

there are some seedy parts of Monterey. Especially

back up like South of Lighthouse Avenue and such. Monterey the town itself isnt as posh as some make it out to be. Its really cool and there is tons of money, but when you get back, like I say towards the South, there are some really poor parts where lots of industry and construction folks live.

My job allowed me to hobnob a couple times with people way

beyond my standing. I went to a Christmas party in 1989 at Alan Gerry's house. You can google him... he was a billionaire back when that was a lot of money. LOL. He owned Cablevision Industries and I installed all the Cable TV billing systems for them, mostly in upstate New York. I had to stay over the holidays for an upgrade in Batavia NY that went sideways, and they felt sorry for me being away from my family. He later bought the land where the 1969 Woodstock festival was held and developed a memorial.

Went to the 2000 US Open...

with my brother and some friends of his from Phoenix. The friends were a couple and the soon to be wife had a set of grandparents that lived in the gated part of Pebble Beach. Her parents lived in San Francisco, but they had a house in Carmel as a vacation spot. One morning I got up early and my brother's buddy and I drove into Starbucks to get a coffee. We had to leave Pebble Beach to get there but when we arrived, there were a bunch of guys getting coffee that were already a bit hammered. We started talking and they were there on a corporate expense account but were looking for a ride into Pebble Beach. In exchange, they gave us Wells Fargo tent passes. So for four days of golf we drank all the liquor and ate all the food we could and hung out on this massive Deck. You could see about 6-8 holes from the deck. The only time we left was to catch a few folks on some of the more iconic holes that you couldn't see.

Honestly, the grandparent's house in PB was not all that impressive. I think they had let it fall out of repair a bit. But her folks house in Carmel was stupid.

Oh, and happened to be there for Tiger's record setting win to kick off his tiger slam. Also was there on Sunday in 2001 when he got the last of the four majors.

Oh yeah, I don't doubt that at all... happens everywhere in

old ritzy neighborhoods. A co-worker a few years ago, an L.A. native, told me stories from his mom who is/was a prominent real estate agent. Said you wouldn't believe how even some of the huge mansions in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, etc, were very outdated inside. I mean, they're still badazz houses... incredible architecture, location, ocean views and all that, and still sell for millions.

But the extra bedrooms have shag carpet from the 70s. Or the baths have pink and baby blue tile, etc. The kitchens have modern appliances, but the rest of the house has been ignored for decades. Because the old folks can live there forever... you never have to move into assisted living if you can afford maids, cooks, gardeners & live-in nurses. LOL Couples in their 90s don't end up in nursing homes.

Young buyers end up having to totally update the interior. I guarantee you the same thing happens in say... the McDaniel/Crescent Ave area of Greenville. Or some of those old houses in the Cleveland Park area, or up on Paris Mountain. Beautiful homes, but if they haven't "turned over" in 50 years and the original owners still live there.....
