Paying Players

May 17, 2021, 2:16 PM

Have I been here long enough to re-post a long article from YardCrap Sports? I know this time of year others sports are the deal, but ~~!
Going to the trash pile today this subject was on local talk radio. Maybe some heard.

I recalled a post from a year ago:
This new movement to allow players to be paid for their likeness is just the beginning and it will quickly grow to much more because there is so much money in college football.
It looks to me like they are trying to turn College Football into Professional Football. Teams with the most money get the top players. It will also turn into one and done like college basketball.
Big trouble is looming!
As I have often said, I 100% agree with both sides, but mostly I see it as bad for college football.
That don't matter as in 30 days it will be reality. I kinda hate that. Players already get paid -> a lot when you consider what a degree, room, and great food cost now. Players have experts training them. Most have incredible facilities you can't find in a gym.

In July some college players will be able to make $$ from their name and likeness. They will have no choice but to take advantage of that.

Good example -- > on July 1 UGA can pay players and CLEMSON can't.
Take a kid who is a 5star. He might consider all things equal as to his needs.
He will of course choose UGA.
In time SC will approve that too, but hey, it still aint going to be equal.

A player in a small town like Clemson will not have the options of one in Athens. GT in Atlanta may have an edge over UGA. This will help the rich get richer. Players at Alabama will be raking in more than kids at Duke. This will be a huge factor as to recruiting.
Auburn is already gearing up and have hired staff to hook players to $$. All colleges will follow if they want to compete. Soon part of recruiting will be a list of available $$ options.

How good can this be for team spirit? Most guys on a team will make little or nothing. Some will make a lot. For example, how much was Trevor Lawrence worth in college -> a lot!!
It will be easy to funnel money to a kid. I am not talking chump change but ton$.
How much will a crazy rich booster pay to put a kid's photo on his car dealership adds --> a lot.
Some schools will be able to get $$ for a few kids, some for all who arrive.

How many have heard of Coastal Carolina? Last season they kinda shocked the football world, came out of no where. They will be good again this season. One deal there is a really good coach. I don't mean Chadwell, but the guy before him --> Joe Moglia.
Joe decided to retire from business and be a football coach. He went 56-22 as he built a program there.

Under Joe, Coastal was coming on:
4 Big South (2012–2014; 2016*) Awards
South Carolina Football Hall of Fame Humanitarian of the Year
Eddie Robinson Award
AFCA FCS Region 2 Coach of the Year
Twice was Big South Coach of the Year

How is Joe relevant? He might not be, but stay with me here as I think.
At 70 Joe decided to hire a new coach for day to day --> Chadwell. Who ever heard of a coach hiring a head coach?
Chadwell went 11-1 last season.
Joe made a new position for himself. He is now in charge of all things football. He assigned himself that role as he is kinda good at business. Did I forget to mention that before he retired from business to take up the "hobby" of coaching he ran the largest online discount brokerage firm in the world. He has Billion$. Some guys play golf, he would rather do this. He works at Coastal for a dollar a year.
The Myrtle Beach area now has 500,000 people. That school is putting up an indoor practice field as I type.
Will Joe pay kids a bundle to attend - don't know, but he certainly can do it with pocket change.

Many colleges have "sugar daddy" boosters who will do ### to win. T Boone Pickens is a famous one. In the past that $$ goes to the program. Now they can give it straight to the 5star kids.

Will it become a bidding war? Of course it will.

Right now the ######## at NCAA do nothing and have not for years except collect pay checks. They lack the ability or desire to do their job. Their main job is to insure a level playing field. How are they reacting?
They are not.

This is state driven. Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, etc already have passed laws allowing it. The NCAA is not willing to challenge. They are silent. Every state who wants to compete (all of them) will fall in line.

Players will be paid not in a few years, but this year.
Good or bad, it is reality.
Combining this with the transfer portal should be fun. Take a kid who captures National attention like a "Johhny Football" Manziel. How much would he be worth transferring to UNLV or OHS?

Check with any team in the SEC (except Vandy). They can tell you all about paying players.

So can we.

Make no mistake, Clemson is likely going to be one of the leaders in NIL representation and compliance.

May 17, 2021, 6:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Paying Players ]

Article 2wks ago said that Trevor Lawrence would have made $150mil in the 3yrs at Clemson if he was allowed to collect off the upcoming changes. TLaw makes about $15k per tweet now since being drafted. Compare that to what a 5* offensive lineman like Jackson Carmen, then look at what a starter like Nolan Turner or BT Potter will make. There will be such an uneven playing field that there will automatically be animosity among teammates and create polarization that will be hard to manage.

I am in agreement that the NCAA, by not taking the bull by the horns, they have created a scenario where states took it upon themselves to follow suit with the California governor.

But how easy it would have been to create an income stream that could have been deployed across the board that could and would have created a much more level playing field. They could have demanded limited access to income that would be made available upon Graduation, Draft, and even create a penalty for not graduating or transferring where those penalties could have been invested for the current 2*-3*'s players that wouldn't demand the same market value. Or at least basically create some type of revenue sharing system.

Then just recently, you had that kicker at UCF that couldn't be recruited out of HS until he dropped his YT site. He was making $7-10k per month off his skits on YT but he couldn't continue to make money due to NCAA rules, that was just 2yrs ago. How unfair is that?? Especially in the scheme of things and where we are headed now.

Then consider this money is going to be taxable. Do these players making money have to include the free education, housing, health insurance, food, clothing, etc, etc as income. Legally, yes they should be taxed for every penny at the point they are making money off their notoriety from the College they represent. This is going to create one hell of a chit show! And the NCAA caused the entire cluster that could have been managed with player equities and equality in mind reduce animosity within programs.

If a kid is making $50k a month, why would he want to listen to a coach. He can pay his own way now, I expect more high profile players to fall to the wayside. There will be severe repercussions. A minor league system will be the only way to keep college football what it is or once was. Change is coming and not of the good kind!

I think we all know this is the beginning of the end to college football as we know it. It’s just a matter of how quickly it’s going to happen. It won’t take long for a lawyer to say the restrictions on amounts of money and how the money can be made is unconstitutional. The only hope for college football as an “amateur”’sport is that if the NFL started a minor league system and that’s not doing to happen.

If you're right, if the elite players are so elite that they need their own league to funnel the NIL money before they're 21, then perhaps college football will instead thrive; the competition would naturally become more even rather than us being the only competitive team in the league for another decade, know what I mean?

If we learned nothing else from 2020, it's that college football is essentially unkillable; it's safe to stay a Clemson football fan, I promise!

Players need to be careful what they ask for. IRS will come calling and want their cut. If they deem them professionals and not students, then does insurance, food, lodging, travel, in-kind services, etc count as income? If so, there will be a tax bill due. If the feds get their cut, look for the states to want their share too, especially for the "big" earners.

The law of unintended consequences is a hard life lesson to learn!

Re: Paying Players

To be fair, because of the OPPORTUNITY to sneak in payments like you're suggesting, the NIL stuff is going to be wildly dependent on compliance.

I wouldn't be surprised if every program created an entire group for compliance of NIL alone, but I'd be especially surprised if Clemson isn't one of the first outright. We run an incredibly tight compliance ship, so to speak, and the rules for NIL will likely be so stringent it will simply come down to having experts & guidance.

Does this mean what coaches like Tressel did at OHS is now encouraged?
Can guys like Todd Gurley now have a Maserati if they autograph it and post their likeness at the dealer?
Can they get free bitcoins if their photo is on it?

Re: Paying Players

May 20, 2021, 4:20 PM

Tressel didn't do any of that though?

He turned his head to discounts; hardly the same as helping steer players in the right directions towards legitimate, beneficial, and NCAA/NIL-approved avenues.

I think you're also going to naturally see more players ABLE to help promote local businesses, rather than just going out to Auburn to get rich (even though obviously Auburn is not near a major city like we are to Greenville).

For example, now the players can do an ad or photo for, say, Tiger Town Tavern, where before they outright couldn't at all (or even just a promo for "come get Trevor autographs Friday night" events).

It is agreed by most that Auburn boosters outbid others for Cam Newton.
Big $$ and boosters interested in football are different. If not in a few years Harvard will line up the best team in the USA.

Couldn't agree more on Cam Newton, but that seems off-topic for NIL & money-rights issues?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not accurate?

May 20, 2021, 4:16 PM

UGA players "can" pay players starting in mere weeks... in spite of league & NCAA rules not being solidified yet, not to mention Georgia state law?

Make no mistake, players get paid, and all the extra stuff you mention is NOT the same as getting paid (room, board, food, training, etc).

Bottom line, the rich will get richer, and CLEMSON IS RICH; we are right next to Greenville, not to mention Clemson's boosters being wealthy, supportive & legion (hence IPTAY & its uniqueness in being the #1 funding arm in college sports), we're regionally rich, and we DO have a dedicated team/department for this stuff in world-class quality that's shown inescapable results for years now.

Players at Alabama will be making more than players at Duke for better reasons than positional conspiracy, so to speak ;)
