Passing Game versus Alabama

Jan 29, 2019, 10:53 AM

Clemson should have won the championship 4x in a row. I still feel like 2015 was better than 2016. 2017 needed a passing QB who could get the ball out in time.

Didn't realize how much higher the QBR rating was for TL vs DW4.

2015: 30-47 for 405 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT (QBR 69.4)
2016: 36-56 for 420 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT (QBR 63.3)
2017: 18-36 for 124 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INT (QBR 7.9)
2018: 20-32 for 347 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT (QBR 92.8)

Trevor put on an incredible performance. I think Deshaun would have also had a similar QBR -- this year -- in this game -- if you swapped him for Lawrence this year everything else being the same.

The coaches has a great game plan to attack Alabama's secondary and Ross and Higgins were too much to contain. Alabama had a great team this year, I follow them relatively closely since that's where I went for law school after Clemson, but I think it was evident from the on the field result that Alabama's secondary wasn't as good as the other squads we've matched up against. Plus, Deshaun was running for his life and essentially willed the team to victory in the face of constant pressure. In contrast, although pressured, Lawrence got good pockets from the OL and had no sacks.

All that being said, Trevor did this in his true freshman year. Scary to think that he could get even better!

No doubt a great game plan and it was

surgically executed. I almost felt bad for Saivion Smith, Lawrence and Ross cooked him all night long.

2015 Deshaun did what he did without Mike Williams or Deon Cain. If either of those young men would have been available, we win that game, in my opinion. Even without them (and Shaq Lawson playing on 1 leg and Mac Alexander missing the second half), it basically came down to an onside kick catching our special teams off guard and a kick return for a TD by them.

Thought Alexander being injured was huge...

Weren’t both of the TE touchdowns after he went down?

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

I remember there was a long run that went wide,

maybe a reverse or sweep. The CB who was in for MA was in position behind the LOS, but couldn't make the tackle. I think it was AJ Terrell. If so, he has come a looooooong way. His dependability to make the tackle is awesome.

Terrell was a 2017 recruit. It must have been

Ryan Carter, Adrian Baker or Mark Fields.

Must've been A. Baker. I remember the first name was an A.***

It was Baker and he was tiny and couldn't make plays on the edge

He was playing at about 170 wasn't he?

Also think the yards/completion tells a lot about ...

... the passing game effectiveness. Deshaun averaged 12 and 13.5 yards per completion, Trevor 17 and Kelly 7.,,,

I caught a lot of flak from saying TL was better than KB.

Jan 29, 2019, 1:11 PM

I was accused [again] of being a racist.

That happened during the Spring game and throughout the time when KB was the starter. A few games into Trevor's starts I said Trevor was the best freshman I'd ever seen. He may turn out to be one of the top ten QBs to play in the NFL. Imo, he's on track to do no less.

Why should we have won in 2017?

Jan 29, 2019, 4:12 PM

I think we pretty clearly weren't the best team in 2017 with our flawed and mediocre offense.

I said the same thing after we won this year. Or at least 3 in a row, it was clear Kelly Bryant wasn't the type to force Saban out of his comfort zone and put him in panic mode like DW and TL was able to do. The defense basically only gave up 10-17 in that game too, any QB that could stretch the field would've won that game. But I'll still take 2 outa 3 over them in the National Title game. They'll be more to come!
