Our problems are bigger than just TE and DJ

Oct 23, 2021, 8:15 PM

Im not a fan of the play calling, but what can you call when DJ cant hit an open man for a TD on the second drive then cant execute a back shoulder. Shipley has a drop on a well thrown ball, and a good call to get him in a favorable matchup.

The WRs are sloppy and poorly coached. Very lazy mechanics, arent getting their heads around right out of the break, and they drop too many passes.

Now that we realistically cant win the divison/ACC, it will be interesting to see how our culture stands compared to other programs that have had rough seasons. At this point we are just playing for a bowl game.

I hate to say this, but there is such a medley of awfulness on O that I dont think just replacing TE is the solution to winning 10+ games next year. Poor coaching hires and roster mismanagement may have set us back several years.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!

Re: Our problems are bigger than just TE and DJ

Oct 23, 2021, 8:18 PM

Optimistic to think we even get a bowl... 4 50/50 games left and realistically they are 40/60 at best. Pitt scored 27 to our 17. If that's all it takes to beat the Tigers this year we definitely aren't going anywhere post season and deservedly so.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We will make a bowl game***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You may be right. My biggest fear is this though...

Oct 23, 2021, 8:21 PM [ in reply to Re: Our problems are bigger than just TE and DJ ]

Dabo has so much capital that he may not be forced to make changes after just one awful year. This will make people mad, but I think Dabo is very arrogant and wont make changes just bc he doesnt want to have to admit he was wrong about the decisions he made in the first place. Id hate to see us get further mismanaged. This coaching staff hasnt adapted at all to the changing landscape of CFB, and unless theyre forced to, they wont.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lol. "Dabo is arrogant".. "he won't make changes"

Oct 23, 2021, 8:34 PM

Dabo isn't an arrogant man at all, and if changes are needed he's shown he'll make them. We would have never made 6 straight playoffs if Dabo didn't make the right changes along the way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo found a formula that worked to get us to 6 CFPs

Oct 23, 2021, 8:35 PM

This will really be the first time that he may have to make changes to the formula to keep up with the changing landscape.

Oct 23, 2021, 8:42 PM [ in reply to Lol. "Dabo is arrogant".. "he won't make changes" ]

Oh. I love Dabo. Arrogant is the wrong term. Stubborn and loyal to a fault would be the term I would use. If Napier and Steele are the precendent, hopefully there are a few changes made this year.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Stubborn may be a better term, yes.***

Everybody is being evaluated

Oct 23, 2021, 8:58 PM [ in reply to You may be right. My biggest fear is this though... ]

But we absolutely don't need to make any coaching changes. In that case, what is the point of evaluating them in the first place? I believe that we have the players to win, but I'm not sure that we continue to get the recruits if we don't improve. I'm fine waiting until the end of the season to pass judgement, but I am a little uneasy about whether Dabo will make an honest assessment of the coaches.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, at this point he may as well wait until the end...

Oct 23, 2021, 9:01 PM

of the season. But I dont know if he will hold the coaches as accountable as we want.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Our problems are bigger than just TE and DJ

Oct 23, 2021, 8:19 PM

Been saying that for the last three games. Every coach on the offensive side of the ball needs to be replaced and Dabo keep his nose out of the play calling.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo isn’t involved with the play calling***

Oct 23, 2021, 8:21 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You obviously missed press conf this week where TE

Oct 23, 2021, 8:25 PM

borderline rolled Dabo under the bud by telling the media Dabo has been calling some plays and even overriding TE

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dabo isn’t involved with the play calling***

Oct 23, 2021, 8:25 PM [ in reply to Dabo isn’t involved with the play calling*** ]

BS. He is looking over the play sheet on every play and is chatting it up. He talks more than TE when we have the ball. TE has all but admitted that he has been over ruled several times this year.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Overriding a play here and there is something most head coaches do.

Oct 23, 2021, 8:31 PM

Plus Dabo has an offensive background as well. Seems to have worked pretty well for us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s more than a play here or there…

Oct 23, 2021, 8:57 PM

To quote Elliot last week when he was asked about passing on 2nd and 3 when we were averaging 4+ yards running, “we had a run called, but coach (Dabo) has the final say on what we run and he wanted to pass there.” The play resulted in a 5 yard sack and subsequently killed the drive.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Winner!***

While I agree with what your saying, we should have recruited

Oct 23, 2021, 8:19 PM

a backup qb that can make basic throws too. Right now our starting pitcher is gassed and we’ve got no relief pitchers.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didnt see any issues with TP...

Oct 23, 2021, 8:23 PM

He made a deep throw to Ross and missed. Then Collins didnt get his head around on a well thrown out, then the ridiculous run call on 3 & 10. Next drive was a completion (I think???) then Collins let up and short-armed a slant. The only bad throw I remember was his last down field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree but the coach’s don’t think he can get the job done

Oct 23, 2021, 8:30 PM

or they’d have played him a lot more be now as bad as the offense has been. They haven’t looked in Helms direction, either. If a backup qbs can’t see the field when the starter has played this bad then I don’t know when he’d ever play. If they are waiting for mop up time in a blowout game that could be next season.

Either we have one of the worst offensive staffs in CFB...

Oct 23, 2021, 8:33 PM

or they have completely missed on talent. Either way, I wont let thier opinion of TP sway me either way bc I frankly dont trust their judgement. Id like to see the kid play some significant snaps.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Either we have one of the worst offensive staffs in CFB...

Oct 23, 2021, 8:45 PM

They are not mutually exclusive. Our QB room is a mess. Honestly we could lose all three and not be in any worse position.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It could be both. But my point is this...

Oct 23, 2021, 8:48 PM

Im not ready to rag on TP just bc the coaches dont think hes good enough to beat out DJ. The O staff has more than proven that they dont have the first clue about how to scheme, develop, and/or judge talent. Idk why everyone is so willing to trust their judgement whenever their best judgement has us as one of the worst Os in the nation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We have a new RB coach and new WR coach...

Oct 23, 2021, 8:52 PM [ in reply to Either we have one of the worst offensive staffs in CFB... ]

The RBs are running hard and with conviction. The cream has risen to the top, and those guys are playing hard.

The WRs are not playing well at all. We've had at least 13 drops in the last 3 games, and blocking by the WRs has been weak. Not sure if they've bought into what Grisham is selling, but that group is playing poorly.

The OL has not played well since 2018. May be time for some new blood there, I dunno.

Otherwise the offensive has led us to the best run in program history, by far.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not this staff...

Oct 23, 2021, 8:56 PM

You pointed out the new faces. We lost Jeff Scott 2yrs ago and hasnt Danny Pearman moved into Admin?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Our problems are bigger than just TE and DJ

Oct 23, 2021, 8:21 PM

Really good assessment. The recruiting philosophy has to change. Oversigning and using the portal are a must moving forward.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Our problems are bigger than just TE and DJ

Oct 23, 2021, 8:34 PM

That would mean poor Danny Pearman has to actually earn a paycheck. I mean, we can’t have the guy who’s “scours” the transfer portal actual identify anyone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think playcalling lost the game. You said it

Oct 23, 2021, 8:28 PM

yourself, nobody can call an offense when there are a couple positions not playing up to proven potential. Being without Ngata, Williams, and Ladson hurts the WR corp, but man what is that 12 or 13 drops in the last 3 games?

Bottom line though, if Trevor or last year's DJ was playing this year, the playcalling would lead to the same top 10 offense we've had the last 3 seasons.

Re: Our problems are bigger than just TE and DJ

Oct 23, 2021, 9:17 PM

Yes they are. After two weeks off against Syracuse and the O no better proved to me coaching is at the heart of this. BV is missing a boat load of players but his unit still keeps us hanging around. Dabo kept referring to our D not getting off the field late but it's been this way every 4th qtr. Our D is battered for being on the field too long. Dabo has been great at bringing in the right coaches. He's not an x/o coach. Seems now he's too involved in O field play. I hope stubborn pride won't stand in the way of making the right changes, bringing in the right people, and staying out of their way.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thast why he keeps hiring former players on the offensive

Oct 23, 2021, 9:52 PM

side of the ball. He likes to meddle and micromanage the O. Former players dont have it in them to tell him to pi$$ off. No reputable OC is coming to us even once we move on from TE. We will promote Streeter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Coaches on the offensive side

Oct 23, 2021, 9:26 PM

Are doing a terrible job. They have taken above average talent and made it below average. Grade of F on offensive Coaching.

Re: Our problems are bigger than just TE and DJ

Been saying this for weeks, some kind of poison has entered the locker room, and it’s not just about DJ . DJ sucks now but he didn’t last year
