Oil change is the life of any engine, and I'm not talking about waiting for the idiot light to come telling some people to do their maintenance. Even with the new oils they are coming out with, no more than 5k before servicing their oil and filter, air filters are also a must replace along with your oil and oil filter changes. I'm not recommending anyone to change their oil every thousand miles, I'm just saying that if they did, it would be cheaper than replacing an engine, and that is what will happen if someone doesn't change their oil, oil filter and air filters at least every 4 to 5 thousand mile. I'm old school, and I do it all every 3,500 miles. Being an X auto/diesel technician, I've learned that 3,500 mile service to the engine, ensures that the engine will last as long as the rest of the vehicle in most cases. Just saying that it's not necessary the vehicle brand that you own that makes them last, it's mostly how you service them that makes them last. Just as many people that own Chevy, Ford, or who ever the auto maker was, they can also brag about how many miles they have gotten from their vehicle as any other as long as they have done proper maintenance to their vehicle. All combustible engines are made from the same basics, and they all will last when taken good care of. And I can promise that I have cleaned dried up grease from under my finger nails from about all of them. Take good care of them, and 95% of the time, they will ride you a long ways for a long time.

The problem with Tacomas is...

I LOVE Tacomas, best mid sized truck on the market by far, and easily my favorite truck made today but...

1. If you buy a brand new one (2016, 2017 models), you will be plagued with transmission, transfer case, and axle leak recalls.

2. New, basic, 4 door 4x4 Tacomas cost as much as a mid range F-150 with some options, which is crazy expensive for a light duty truck.

3. Any used Tacoma you find with mid-mileage (less than 100k miles) is going to have a price tag equivalent to that of a brand new one. Apparetly the "law" of immediate depreciation on a new car doesnt apply to these trucks.

4. Any used Tacoma that is in a decent price range, no matter the year, will typically have a description that reads something like "Yeah, this truck is awesome. Its a 2001, its got 300,000 miles on it, been in a fender bender, and has an irregular/unknown maintenance schedule. Asking price: $18,000". Seriously, you'll see Tacomas anywhere from 6-20 years old with 250,000+ miles on them going for $15,000+. Its stupid.

And that is why I cant justify buying a Tacoma. I bought a 4runner instead. Literally the same vehicle, but without a bed. I got a used 2002 4runner SR5 Sport 4x4 with a locking differential and the rare "tall" TRD offroad suspension, full leather interior, digital temp controls, "big brake" upgrade from the factory, 1 owner, 110,000 miles on the odo, full maintenance records from the dealership (oil every 3k, transmission/4wd every 25k, full service on everything), and drives like its brand new for less than half of what a basic 2002 4x4 Tacoma with 280,000 miles cost.

The Colorado/Canyon is a great alternative for the money, AND the new ones are outperforming the Tacomas in mileage testing, towing ability, reliability, and a few other areas.
