OT - Army vs. Navy. who you pulling for.

Dec 8, 2022, 6:23 PM

All due respect to Army!

I respect everything about the Army.

But, I was in the Department of The Navy( U. S. Marine Corps 92-00).

I have to go with the Mid-Shipmen. Watched both teams throughout the year; both got better as the year went on. But, right now, I think Navy is playing at a bit of a higher level.

That could be bias though.

Anyway, who are you going for? Why?

Hey BerlinSPY73®, I think you’re asking me that question, right? If so:

I served 4 yrs active duty as an engineer (BSEE) at the AF Geophysics Laboratory, Hanscom AFB, Bedford, MA. Then 27 years with the Ga ANG as a Vehicle Operations Officer (4 years), Air Weapons Controller (6 yrs), then a Communications Officer (17 yrs) until I ‘aged out’ in 2013. Can’t think of any other way I would’ve wanted to spend my life - and owe it all to the Army, Clemson and the Air Force/Air National Guard!

How about yourself? I’ve always been curious about your handle.

AIM HIGH! Go Army!

And GO TIGERS!

Dec 9, 2022, 1:39 AM

Yeah, I'm the one who inquired. Enlisted Sept '67. Spent 8 months in tech school at Goodfellow AFB located in San Angelo, Tx. Then very fortunate to be assigned to the 6912th Security Sqdn, 690th Electronic Security Group at Tempelhof AFB in Berlin. One of the AF Security Service units. Was there from July '68 to discharge Sept '71. Basically worked for the NSA as an electronic intercept analyst monitoring a segment of Russian eastern block air operations at a site off base. That assignment was about as close to being a civilian in the military as one could get. The Army also had a site at another area in the American zone. Was discharged three weeks early to enroll at CU as a second semester sophomore after 18 hours of junior college credits didn't transfer. You certainly had a varied work experience during your time. Regret a bit not looking at the reserves after active duty, but was very focused on finishing my degree.

Growing up always rooted for Navy. Then after Navy had that long winning streak recently I rooted for Army to break the streak. Have a good friend who is an Annapolis graduate that I halfway root for Army just to give him grief.

Attended the 1968 game as a guest of my future father-in-law that was in the Army War College at the time. Froze my rear off. It surprised me how many non-academy graduates were insanely involved in supporting one or the other. I tried telling them it wasn't "the army" vs "the navy" it was a bunch of college kids playing a football game. It was like trying to talk logic to coots.

Good Stuff!

Thank You to all who served! Post and present!

This game always kind of brings me back to the basics of why I love the game of football!

Good luck to the health and future of all the players!

Heck of a thing to commit your life to serve; especially serving and going to school at the same time. Then throw football on top of that. Not easy.

Funny thing I was in the Army from 2004 - 2016 before I switched to the Navy. During those years, Navy won every year. After I switched to the Navy, the Army has won most of them.

Would have to go with the Army. An uncle served during WWII in Germany. One cousin jumped with the 82nd on Dday then later spent more than 9 months as a POW in Dresden. Another cousin died as a tail gunner on a B17 when it caught fire over England in route to bomb the rocket factory at Peenemunde. A 2nd cousin, born in Piedmont, served in the Navy for three years, then later enlisted in the Army and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. Eight of his 37 medals were Purple Hearts.

That said, I respect Jeff Monken because despite the tough season this year, he's turned the Army football program around. He threatened to leave if they didn't start taking football as seriously as Navy.

No wrong answers for sure!
Always a fun game to watch.

I kind of wish they would move the game to different parts of the country, though. Atlanta, Miami, Phoenix, Seattle, Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Charlotte, Salt Lake, etc.

So many people who have served across the country; I think would draw a sell-out crowd wherever it's played.
It would also be kind of like a bowl game for the Cadets and Mid-Shipmen (especially at the more tropical locations, LOL). Be good!

Seriously. My dad (c/o 58) was in the Army and I had wanted to go into the Navy but some underlying health things precluded that, unfortunately. I usually just pull for whoever is the underdog that year, but this year they have pretty comparable records, so I'll just watch and end up pulling for whoever I end up pulling for!

I do really like the way they're mixing up the uniforms in recent years. Very cool, and that alone can make the game a little more fun/interesting for those without a dog in the fight.

Army has a LB. Who has a future in the league. But most in this game are likely done with football after their academy time is finished.
