OSU depth chart question

Dec 22, 2019, 2:48 PM

Is anyone else confused as to what personnel OSU's defense will have on the field when Clemson is in its 3 and 4 wide receiver sets?

Looking at the depth chart, OSU lists 12 DBs. The starters will be on the field for sure: Jeffrey Okudah (CB), Jordan Fuller (FS), Damon Arnette (CB), leaving 9 players to choose from to fill the strong safety and nickel back spots.

Looking closer, the two players actually listed at SS/LB (Brendon White and Jahsen Wint) have combined for 3 snaps in the last 3 games (Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin). So they won't be on the field. Brendon White appears to be transferring.

Marcus Williamson has 0 snaps in the last 3 games. So he won't be on the field.

Josh Proctor and Marcus Hooker have combined for 40 snaps, or about 5.33 and 8 snaps a game. So I guess they might be on the field for a few snaps.

That leaves 4 DBs they'll depend on for the nickel and strong safety positions: Shaun Wade, Cameron Brown, Sevyn Banks and Amier Riep. But, none of them are listed as safeties, which I guess is why I'm confused, and if you look at their snap totals (Cameron Brown has 253, Amir Riep has 185 and Sevyn Banks has 170), are you really going to trust them against Clemson when you haven't trusted them all season?!?!?

Are they going to leave a linebacker on the field to match up with Amari Rodgers and Diondre Overton?!?

Seems like there's a depth problem to me, but in order to expose that Clemson has to stay on the field to run plays right?

Typically OSU plays one safety in Fuller and three corners in Wade, Arnette, and Okudah. Wade typically lines up over the slot.

that's what i figured. they basically have one extra db they'll rely on with Cameron Brown. seems like a depth issue if they have to play more than 70 snaps.

Brown, Riep, and Banks have all filled due to injury. Not sure who the coaches would play as a fifth DB, seems to be game specific.
