Opt outs on the side lines

Dec 30, 2021, 11:37 AM

Might be an unpopular opinion but if you decide it’s time for you to move on and start getting ready for the nfl draft then you shouldn’t be allowed to travel with the team and stand on the side lines. You get all the benefits of an all expenses paid trip to go the bowl but don’t participate. Just don’t seem right in my book. Buy a ticket and watch it in the stands.

I agree. I thought that was odd that ISU let their opt outs be on the sidelines. Out is out. Stay home and work on your NFL tape or whatever.

I can see both viewpoints.
Glad we didn't have any.

I guess that is each coaches decision but I agree

Agreed 1000%. They need to stay home if they are a quitter.

I thought the same thing. If you feel the need to “opt out”, then you should not be allowed on the sidelines dressed in your jersey. Wonder if the Cyclones think the game would’ve ended differently if he’d chosen to play with the team?

Let’s be honest. We dodged a bullet.

If Hall plays yesterday, we lose.

If both Rose and Hall play, potentially we lose by double digits.

Obviously, no way to know for sure and we were missing players too, but those were HUGE parts of their team identity and game plan on both sides of the ball.

Clemson was 8th in the nation in rush defense

and 9th in total defense (Iowa State was 10th). While we only won by 7, it's hard to say if they would have made enough of a difference to win and especially by double digits. Wonder if they had any regrets standing on the sideline watching their team lose by 7.

Might be the other way around! If we had all 30 of our missing scholarship players, the game would have ended by the half.

Maybe I'm just old school, but...

Dec 30, 2021, 11:43 AM

if I'm the coach and a player opts out, THERE IS NO WAY UNDER GOD'S GREEN EARTH that he travels with the team and stands on the side line wearing a team jersey.

I’d heard Matt Campbell stand up guy. Pretty surprised the opt out on sideline on ISU dime. All for players’ rights, but there should be a penalty for not completing team obligations. Financial for sure and perhaps future access to benefits. NIL has made this a different culture.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think I heard

Dec 30, 2021, 11:51 AM

That rose or one of the guys that opted out informed the team the day before the game that he wasn’t gonna play. So you would travel knowing that you were ultimately not gonna suit up prolly. Get the fuke out here.

What do opt outs do to get ready for the draft

Dec 30, 2021, 11:55 AM

that is better than practicing with the team and playing one more game for scouts to see? Breece Hall got to watch his offense play one of the best defenses in the country. It would have been a great opportunity to show the NFL what he can do. Maybe some NFL team has already told him he's their 1st round pick and not to get hurt.

Re: Opt outs on the side lines

Dec 30, 2021, 11:55 AM

Disagree. Not every situation is the same. If a guy is a high first rounder and it’s not a playoff game, I think the guys on the team view it much differently than the fans. Especially, if the family/financial situation is one of hardship. I doubt any player on ISU thought Hall was being selfish for not playing.

Now, opting out to transfer or start combine prep to boost a 3rd round projection…I’d probably agree, keep them off the sideline, but ultimately if the coaches/players on the team are cool with it, we should be too.

No Tigers opt outs on the sideline?

Dec 30, 2021, 12:33 PM

I put them to work. Grunt work. Nothing fun. Helping the trainers, coaching staff, etc. You play or you work. This would never fly today, but hey.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wouldn't let them travel with the team at all. They have

Dec 30, 2021, 12:55 PM

already made the decision to put themselves above the team at that point. I can't say I am against opting out in some situations, but if you DO opt out, then your time as a player on the team, on the sidelines, is done.

I wouldn't want to be on the sidelines in that situation anyway. Can't imagine that you would get anything good out of it, and some former teammates could be downright hostile.
