Only Defensive Question Mark for 2022

Jan 19, 2022, 3:09 AM

I am very confident in the LB, DL, and safety groups. How well will our corners hold up in coverage? Are Wiggins, Davis, Greene, and Jones enough? Who do you think will contribute the most from the incoming class and are they ready for college game speed? It would be amazing to get 'Mukuba-level' contributions from one of the incoming guys.

This type of athleticism looks like it could contribute right away:

Having our entire defensive line return will help those corners a ton, too! But, I agree that losing two NFL early round draft picks in one season definitely makes this the most uncertain group next year. With the talent we’ll have at the CB position, that’s pretty incredible.

Go Tigers!

Both Pride and Lucas are ready to play

Our 3 deep is talented enough. All out competition through September will be fun to watch

Agree on the DL and blitzing LBs supporting the corners and stressing opposing QBs. That pick was extremely impressive and exciting. When I saw it live I immediately thought about booth's first pick against UVA that really got his hype going on the college level. Fun to watch, excited about lukus

I think Fred Davis is primed for a breakout year. I've been really high on him since he signed. I think Wiggins could can be really good. They thought enough of him to cross train him to get him in the games as a freshman. Jones I also think he a good year. He's shown that he can be really good, but some time as full time starter may help push him over.

If the Power Rangers 2.0 get the kind of QB pressure I think they will, we won't need the CBs to be the best. I am feeling good about Davis and Jones and the two deep and the incoming freshman if they contribute will be icing on the cake.

Have seen our schedule? Corners will be just fine.

Have not seen our schedule.

What about ND? ACC championship game? Playoffs?

I know tons of talent, low on experience though. Corner a big ask in our scheme and complexity. Sure would be nice to get a couple one year portal guys for insurance. Jmo

The 2 inside LB spots are a huge question mark

Jan 19, 2022, 8:42 AM

for me. Trotter, Bentley, McGuire, Allen are all unproven. Will Barrett Carter move inside? Right now he backs up Simpson on the outside or SLB.

Not sure why you are so confident in our ILBs.

Trenton Simpson is going to be great. First round potential. Very versatile defender.

However, our ILBs are a cause for concern. Bentley is a huge liability in the passing game. Maguire is more athletic but not the run stopper that Bentley is. Trotter Jr and Barrett Carter are the most talented options that we have inside, but both will only be sophomores. After those 4, the depth gets really scary. Sergio Allen will be coming off a serious injury and he hasn't played much. Wade Woodaz has potential, but probably won't be ready to contribute as a freshman. Hopefully we can sign Dudley and McCloud to add more depth, but they also probably won't be ready to contribute either. We are going into the season with 4 ILBs that can play winning football, and all of them have deficiencies (athleticism, experience). Then it really falls off after those 4.

You're right about CB being a serious concern. I am hopeful that Sheridan Jones will have a senior year as good as Mario Goodrich had. Fred, Nate, and Malcolm won't be able to replicate Andrew Booth. Lukus and Pride might have to play early. This is a position that will not be as good in 2022 as it was this year. But, if our front 4 plays to their capability, it might not matter that much.

Great great point about the ilb. Am really hoping the LaVonta makes a huge step this season and with more snaps get better in pass pro.

I asked above and in other threads. Should we go to the portal and get a couple CB's for a year and same with an ilb?

If you go to the portal and get 1 year loaners for depth at ILB then you likely would lose Bentley, Mcguire or both which puts you right back in the same situation.

I don't think we are in position to move on any defensive portal guys.

It will simply be a situation of having to get the young guys ready to provide quality depth.

Hopefully we are healthier this coming season and only need the youth for depth and not as starters.

Realistically, how many CBs in the portal could come in and start for us?

Sheridan will be a senior and has all the tools to replicate what Goodrich did for us this year. In fact, I believe that Sheridan is more talented than Goodrich. I am optimistic that he will be even better than Goodrich was this year. Fred and Nate have a ton of potential with their length and athleticism. We need one, or both, to really take huge strides this offseason. Malcolm can play multiple spots for us. Lukus and Pride have the ability to play early.

We have 7 CBs now that we added Myles Oliver. That's a good number for us. I would ride with what we got and expect Sheridan, Fred, and Nate to take massive strides this offseason.
