All we know about Brent's coaching ability indicates he...

Sep 22, 2018, 9:23 AM

can do anything he wants. The issue is that it's obvious that he doesn't want to be a head coach right now. He's a type A person. I've learned you never say a type A can't do something. Actually, if you really want something done just tell a man like Brent Venables that he can't do it.

Please don't tell Brent that he can't be a good head coach, please.

Once Upon A Time In Clemson (LONG STORY)

Sep 22, 2018, 9:32 AM

Once upon a time, in a land where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness, there existed this offensive coordinator named Chad Morris. Chad Morris brought life, energy, and lethality to an anemic Clemson offense and everyone believed him to be a great coach. True enough, Chad Morris was a great offensive coordinator who had a big hand in recruiting top talent and bringing a specific style to Clemson's offense. In December 2011, Morris became tied with Gus Malzahn as the highest paid assistant in college football after Clemson University gave Morris a six-year contract worth $1.3 million annually. After hearing this news, Clemson fans were excited because they would have Chad for years to come; or would they?

Some rumors and scuttlebutt circulated that Chad Morris should replace Coach Swinney as the Head Coach of Clemson. Not long after that Clemson took a big spanking at the hands of West Virginia due to a horrible defensive showing. Which lead to the Evil Kevin Steele being fired by Head Coach Dabo Swinney. Dabo Swinney brought in a Monster named Brent Venables who would completely transform Clemson's defense to a Top 3 defense every year regardless of recruit star power.

Suddenly, the Chad left and went to SMU to become a head coach, and later became the head coach at Arkansas. Since the Chad left Clemson his record as a college football head coach is 15–24. He quickly learned that his record of 169–38 as a high school head coach would count for nothing.

One sunny afternoon at a media golf outing, a sports news reporter asked Brent Venables what he thought about a head coaching position in Texas or Kansas, and his reply was to the effect of this.
"I love Clemson, and so does my family. After all some coaches make good head coaches while others make amazing coordinators."

The moral of the story is this. Brent Venables is intelligent enough to imagine himself as a head coach and realize that it doesn't fit well for him. Chad was an amazing coordinator and would still be a great coordinator for any Division I school. He is a horrible head coach, and had he remained at Clemson, I'm not certain that Clemson would have made 3 playoff appearances and won a national championship. At times he would call some very unnecessary trick plays that would cost us the game in some cases. Example, Nuk was wide open in the end zone due to a mismatch and Sammy received the ball and threw to Tajh Boyd for an interception. In the end, Clemson now has two coordinators on offense that work well together and design plays that are awesome.

Coach Swinney is a team manager, a solid recruiter, and has an extensive network of coordinators that could replace any of the ones we have within 24-48 hours. I'm convinced that there would be no noticable differences should he have to replace a coordinator. Coach Swinney is a visionary in respects to hiring coaches and recruiting players. It's like he has a premonition of how they would mesh with his program. That is 90% of his success right there in molding his program's culture. A culture of winning.

To answer the question more clearly, I could imagine Jeff Scott becoming the head coach at Clemson if Dabo were to leave the program. This would leave Tony Elliott and Brent Venables as coordinators, and allow Jeff Scott to become that team manager that Dabo Swinney has become over the years. Jeff Scott is another recruiting machine and the program would have zero drop off in success if that were to happen. So the short answer is, "NO" I would not want Brent Venables to become the head coach at Clemson. However, I would love to see Marion Hobby return to be our Defensive Coordinator should Brent Venables ever leave.

The Chad endorsed Tony Elliot as a great offensive mind and coordinator.

Chad inherited the worst program in the ncaa at SMU and is now at Arkansas recruiting the exact opposite type of offensive scheme as was there before. He did a great job turning SMU into a bowl contender and I think he’ll do a good job at Arkansas if given time.

I don’t think Venables would relinquish play calling duties if he was a head coach. Typically that doesn’t work out well

I think Coach V would do a great job. While it would be interesting to know what type of footprint he would leave on our offense, it's just too hard to know. Regardless, I'm sure he would be sure that the offense complements our defense in the best way possible.

If there was a negative, the first thing that comes to mind is recruiting. Based on what so many inside the program have said about Coach Swinney's influence on recruiting, I would expect that the effects of Swinney's departure would definitely be noticed in that area.
