Clemson defeats Duke for unbeaten ACC year

TOKYO -- Some 50,000 Japanese spectators, with no particular loyalties but a taste for the spectacular, were treated to a game of big plays yesterday when No. 13 Clemson beat Duke, 33-21.

Rudy Harris ran 59 yards for the clinching touchdown, giving Clemson (9-1-1, 6-0-1) its first unbeaten season in the Atlantic Coast Conference since 1982. It takes on California in the Florida Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1.

There were long touchdown passes: Duke's Dave Brown connecting on plays of 55 and 72 yards to Brad Breedlove.

There was a reserve quarterback coming off the bench to save the day: Clemson's Richard Moncrief with a 34-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run, followed by a 34-yard scoring pass to Terry Smith.

There were reversals: Within three plays, five minutes into the fourth quarter, there was one pass interception and three fumbles. Duke (4-6-1, 1-6-0) started with the ball. Clemson ended up with it. And that's when Moncrief hit on his scoring pass.

"The consistency wasn't there for us," said Clemson coach Ken Hatfield, who picked up his 100th career victory.

26-point 4th quarter. Not bad.

Still can't believe we played a game in Tokyo.

That was the second time we’d played in Tokyo

We played Wake Forest there a few years earlier.

The whole Hatfield era was a mirage, far as I'm concerned.

Nobody could have replaced Danny and been welcome due to the circumstances, but Hatfield was such a sourpuss, he made it easy not to like him.
