"Intercepted! Up the near Sideline is Simmons, and He. Will. Score!"

Clemson Punishes Florida State in Tallahassee, 34-23
September 10, 1989|Associated Press

“This was just a good whippin’,” I believe they’re better than last year. They looked like they came out with a year of frustration behind them. I think they’d heard enough about the “puntrooski”.
- Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Clemson Coach Danny Ford didn't like his chances coming into Saturday night's game at Florida State. But his team surprised him.

"We have to have some people play better than they're able and to have some others whip some people, and we did a pretty good job of accomplishing that," Ford said after the 10th-ranked Tigers defeated Florida State, 34-23.

Terry Allen scored three touchdowns in the first half, including a 73-yard scoring run, that sparked the Tigers to a 28-10 halftime lead.

"Clemson's better than I thought they were," Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden said. "That was just a good whipping."

Freshman linebacker Wayne Simmons also scored on a 73-yard run after intercepting a Peter Tom Willis pass that helped Clemson take a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Allen, who sat out Clemson's opener for disciplinary reasons, scored Clemson's first two touchdowns on one-yard runs. He finished with 130 yards in 20 carries.

Although the Tigers (2-0) led only 7-0 after one quarter, they dominated Florida State through the early going, racking up 148 yards offense before the Seminoles got their initial first down.

Florida State (0-2) closed within 21-7 when Dexter Carter scored on a two-yard run with 1:34 left in the first half, but Allen answered with his 73-yard run to give the Tigers a 28-7 lead.

Bill Mason kicked a 28-yard field goal on the final play of the half to pull Florida State within 28-10.

The Seminoles drove 77 yards on the opening kickoff of the second half to cut their deficit to 28-16 on Paul Moore's one-yard run. Willis, who passed for 242 yards, was sacked looking for a receiver on the two-point conversion attempt.

Florida State threatened again on its next offensive series, but Moore fumbled at the Clemson 17 after a 20-yard run.

"Getting the fumble sure helped out," Ford said. "They are a tremendous offensive football team, and they kept me scared to death the entire game."

Best Is The Standard

I loved that game.

That was one my fondest early memories of Clemson football.

I remember the days leading up to the game and the interviews with Danny and you could absolutely tell he knew his team was ready. There was just a different focus and mindset on our team that game.

That was my first trip to Tallahassee...

Sat in the end zone and got splinters in my butt from the wooden bleachers.

You may recall, FSU also lost the previous week to Southern Miss (with Bret Favre at QB for the Golden Eagles). Following the loss to Clemson, FSU starts the season 0 - 2, but would go on to win the next ten in a row, including wins against 21st ranked LSU, 17th ranked Syracuse, 11th ranked Auburn, 2nd ranked Miami, and 6th ranked Nebraska in the Fiesta bowl. to finish the season 10-2 with a No. 2 ranking in the coaches poll and a No. 3 ranking in the AP poll.

Like many, I stood speechless in '88 as Leroy Butler

Sep 9, 2021, 9:52 AM

ran down the sidelines, putting a permanent dagger in my heart. Yes, it still hurts.

That made this game so much sweeter. When Simmons intercepted that pass, I went crazy. I think Clemson nation actually needed that game in Tallahassee.

The younger fans may want to watch it online. That defense was nasty as well.

One for the ages! Thanks for the memory.

just turned 21 a few days before. I went to watch the game with my younger brother at Francis Marion. I felt like the man walking into a place and purchasing a keg of beer for everyone. My first ever! We were glued to the TV the entire game and didn't even pay any attention to the pretty young ladies waiting patiently for the game to end. It was a blast and it's a very special memory.

I was there with Tiger Band!

Sep 9, 2021, 11:30 AM

It was awesome! Their stadium was one of the worst. Wooden and metal framed bleachers. Bobby put in some major renovation shortly after that.

Tiger Band was staying in a crappy motel, green shag carpet, wood paneling, purple bed spreads. But we had fun.

Funny you mention that...

Sep 9, 2021, 3:39 PM

We went back to the Bands hotel after the game to party with April Newell and some of the other baton twirling girls.

You're right. That place was a dump.

What I remember about that game.

Noles lost the opener to Southern Miss who had some unknown quarterback with a strange last name. Somether like Favor or Farther or Fabrege. I don't think anybody ever heard of him after that.??

Clemson comes in the next week and wins. We go to 0-2. Clemson fans loved it. At the end of the game they were mocking our warchant. "Oooh ohhh oh and two....."

In a few years we admitted it was something we could laugh about.

But all was not lost. We finished the year 10-2, beating Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl 41-17 and finishing 2nd in coaches poll and 3rd in AP.

It was the 3rd year of our 14 year streak of 10+ wins.

I'll never forget Simmons pick six. Of course, I won't forget Leroy Butler either. Ugh!

So tell me BretFSU, do you think FSU has a chance of being ranked when they visit Death Valley later this year?

Yes, we have a chance. We have a chance to be 6-1 (but, I'd put that at less than 50%) and be ranked near the top 10. We would probably be ranked in top 25 if we are 5-2.

So, there's a chance.

I've learned to temper my emotions based on one game. I try not to get too high with a win or too low with a loss.

I am very confident that Norvell has the team headed in the right direction. But, I also understand that one game - against a ND team which may be overrated - is not enough to mortgage the farm on.

How good is UNC? Hopefully they were way overrated.

My guess is we are at the point on the road back to respectability where we will still lay an egg or two along the way.

I don't know whcih game we will lose, but if we go into Clemson with a 5-2 record I won't be upset. I'd be elated with 6-1.

We've got 4 home games which seem very winnable. (But, who knows what is going on with Louisville? I like Satterfield. I think he will eventually do a good job with them). The two away games are Wake and UNC.

So, 6-1 is not a pipe dream. But, I would say 5-2 is more likely.

We were so hoarse the next morning, none of us could order breakfast at the drive through. We had to pull out of line and go inside to point at the menu.

It was only justice that it was Leroy Butler chasing Terry Allen down the sideline in vain…

My senior year, attended the game and it was glorious.
