On Second Glance (D, Kearse, Green, Heart)

Jan 14, 2016, 4:50 AM

Watched the broadcast of the game tonight...

* Dodd completely abused #76 all night. Made him look like the Juco he was
* If Bama has the best O-line in college football, our front 7 are the Iron Curtain
* Besides two busted plays, we dominated for the first 50 minutes.
* Kearse's play was disgusting. Absolutely sickening to watch him play with virtually no aggressiveness and no guts. Looked like he was jogging most of the night and O-layed Howard at one point. The last long run by OJ Howard late in the 4th was totally on Kearse and a lack of effort.
* TJ Green plays tough. I like his aggressiveness. However, he may have cost us the game with multiple busted coverages and shifts in momentum because of them. Not the type of last game I would want NFL scouts to judge me on.
* This team doesn't quit. Love the heart. I never feel like we're out of it with DW4 leading.
* We have some challenges in the secondary next year. If we solve those challenges, we should field a quality D once again.
* Our O should be the best in country next year. Will likely have to carry the D until we gain experience and depth.

Good points especially on Jayron. I noticed and screamed about it during the game. Just like he seemed like his bags were already packed before kickoff.

I saw the beginning of Kearse's exit in the ACCCG...

Jan 14, 2016, 8:53 AM

...that last feeble effort to get Switzer out of bounds was another reason why Carolina had enough time to make that game a nail biter.

Go back and watch that game again. Against UNC he played out of position, loped around, didn't tackle etc. earlier in his career he was much more aggressive but never tackled well. I certainly hope he is successful in the NFL but I believe we will be fine in the secondary with new starters. There will be some busts in coverage but they will be fewer and fewer as the season progresses. I can't wait for April!

Im honestly not worried about our secondary next year

Jan 14, 2016, 5:53 AM

Im more worried about our LBs and the depth, seems once again we will be very thin at LB and relying on 3 guys to stay healthy all season. I agree that our offense will have to bail out our defense the first part of the season until the secondary can gain some experience. But on the other hand, we won't even need a defense for next season with the guys we have returning on offense

Help's coming

Jan 14, 2016, 5:57 AM

Even though they'll be freshmen I think Lamar and Smith will push to be backups. Also all indications are Chad Smith is going to be really good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know we have talented LBs coming

Jan 14, 2016, 6:29 AM

But LB is a hard position to learn. I believe our LB commits will be studs but the question is how long will it take them to learn the position?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True

Jan 14, 2016, 6:43 AM

I just think that with this new group (including Chad smith) our second and third (nonexistent this past year) group will overall be better than our second group from this past season. I'd like to see O'Daniel get his chance after how hard and well he played last year. Our talent level will be higher.

You forget Ben Chad Jalen Kendell Dorian Korrin??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

both Smith and Lamar are already at CU will go through

Jan 14, 2016, 11:33 AM [ in reply to I know we have talented LBs coming ]

Spring-- they will not look like FR after a game or 2

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow...we are the opposite.

Jan 14, 2016, 6:42 AM [ in reply to Im honestly not worried about our secondary next year ]

LB will be a strength. We will have some solid depth finally too. Secondary is by far my biggest worry as far as the D goes. I will put that right there with special teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Freshman, but both Lamar and Smith come in for Spring

Jan 14, 2016, 8:36 AM [ in reply to Im honestly not worried about our secondary next year ]

And not to mention we have Chad Smith that had the talent but needed to bulk up is ready. I loved Goodson and Blanks was a good player but I think this position is upgraded greatly next year with Odaniel playing great and Wiggins back. We actually will have a 2-deep that can play. Another great year out of Boulware and some SERIOUS talent from freshm

I think (and hope) that the monsters in the front line will

Jan 14, 2016, 6:57 AM

take the heat off the secondary until they can gain some experience. Nothing helps defensive secondary stats more than a QB lying on his back every pass play. We will exert a lot of pressure with the rush, so the quick patterns are what the new guys will have to become proficient at covering early on.

Was kearse hurt? Pulling a Kyle Parker?

Jan 14, 2016, 8:07 AM

He really did not look like the same player last few games of the season
Injury?
Not playing 100% to avoid injury and nfl posturing?
Dunno, but was clear he looked off

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Parker WAS hurt... Not sure about Kearse.***

Re: On Second Glance (D, Kearse, Green, Heart)

Jan 14, 2016, 8:27 AM

Pending Tankersley, Secondary will consist of
CB-Tank
CB-Baker, Fields, Carter
FS-Jadar or Van Smith
SS-Jadar or Jeffrie Gibson
Tanner Muse wil be 2nd team at a safety spot.
Backup corners will consist of the losers of the starting spot above plus Edmond, Johnson, Chalmers and potentially more. Wiggins can also potentially be a starter at safety instead of the Sam/Nickel if O'Daniel can prove his worth. It is now time for O'Daniel to take that next step anyway.

LB will be fine with Boulware and 1 of Lamar, R. Smith, and C. Smith starting. The other 2 plus Jalen Williams and Joseph will provide an actually reliable 3 deep.

DT will be the strongest, deepest unit and DE will be deep and talented but inexperienced with Bryant bringing the most snaps.

Agree. If our safeties had played well we'd have won by 2-3 TDs, IMO.

Re: On Second Glance (D, Kearse, Green, Heart)

Jan 14, 2016, 9:27 AM

Kearse's lack of effort was conspicuous since the Louisville game on the kickoff return when he essentially walked off the field to allow the returner to run through his gap for a TD. He has been loafing most of the year. His effort has been completely different than last year and was very inconsistent and spotty. Green gave 100% but doesn't seem to know what his coverage responsibilities are and doesn't understand the concept of zone coverage (that doesn't mean to stare down the quarterback and react after the ball is thrown). SAFETY means the last line of defense to prevent TDs. Kearse doesn't have the mentality to play free safety. Strong safety is better. He has always been playing the wrong position. Just calling it like it is. Kearse was great last year.

Dodd was outstanding. Everyone else on defense played pretty well. Safety was a glaring weak spot. Alabama took advantage of Alexander's absence (immediately). Credit to them.

s far as I'm concerned this is an empty thought or reasoning for what happened in the 2nd half.

From watching the game over there was only 1 play that it was obvious that Mac was really missed and that was the missed tackle on OJ for what would have been a loss or no gain. Baker took a bad angle and is too small not to wrap up.

Here's why Coker racked up after Mac went out.

On Stewart's deep catch down the sideline Boulware was just a hair late getting to Coker and he hit Stewart over TJ without him raking the out stretched arms or locating the ball. Tank was trailing the play by 3-4 yds.

On OJs 1st TD they stacked him and Stewart on the line, oh released , Stewart sat, tank didn't know where to go, and TJ was looking in the back filed in 2 deep not even looking toward tanks side. Blanks was in the slot covering no one. Not sure if blanks or TJ were supposed to roll over because both were just in space.

On OJs 2nd TD he lined up on the line next to the tackle. Ridley was next to Coker in the backfield. Ridley ran the wheel route and oj streaked down the numbers. Ben chucked oj on his way to cover Ridley. Tank reacted late to oj and was behind. TJ bit up like he was covering a run. There was no reason to because Coker just stood up and threw it over him. Not even a play fake.

3 plays....142 yds and 17 PTs.

TJ played probably his worst game at the worst possible time.

That had nothing to do with Mac being out. Baker even broke up a TD pass on Ridley in the endzone
