OLE MIKE

mentioned some past great Clemson Basketball players but he did not mention this one.

Those of us at Clemson in 1962 will never forget Jim Brennan. He lived in Johnstone on top floor over looking the Tillman Hall Pkg. lot. One of the best to ever play at Clemson. I knew him and most all of the players on that team. They all lived in the tin cans. As a student, I never missed a FB, Baseball game or basketball game. I sat directly behind the team bench at every home game in the old field house. Loved those games.

"Jim Brennan became the first Clemson player to make first-team All-ACC Tournament in 1962 with 34-points against #8 Duke in the semifinals before losing to Billy Packer and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 77–66. In 1963–64, coach Bobby Roberts guided the Tigers to an 8–6 record in the ACC."

They deserved better from me, just as Clemson deserves better from its AD and supposed Coach.

I made every game back then with my parents. I was only 10 but when looking over the roster that year I remember other names on that team also: Gary Burnisky, Donnie Mahaffey, Mike Bohonak, Garry Helms, and Buddy Benedict (my favorite). Great memories in Old Fike. Thanks for posting!

Another great player from that area I saw a lot (Clemson was small back then) was Jim Sutherland. He was a Clemson native which is rare. He was a nice guy everyone liked.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/jim-sutherland-1.htm
Games back then were always packed tight, hot and sweaty with most standing the entire game. Freshmen did not play, had a game before the game. It was a great era to be a fan.

I see he was also 1966-67 senior class president and was awarded the Norris Medal, presented to the best all-around graduating senior and Clemson’s most prestigious undergraduate award.
Sutherland was an All-ACC basketball player and ACC Student-Athlete-of-the-Year. He was later drafted by the Seattle Supersonics.

More from the web --
After serving in the United States Army in West Germany, Sutherland went on to become a pediatric cardiologist at Letterman Army Medical Center at the Presidio in San Francisco and worked as an Army surgeon in Saudi Arabia. He volunteered as a pediatric cardiologist in Granada and Bangladesh.

He was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991 and received the Clemson Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.

Didn't he have a significant free throw streak. I remember it being talked about a lot.

Totally agree on Jim Brennan. He had a funny looking delivery on his shot but man could he fill it up. I was in high school nearby when Jim was at Clemson and attended all the games at old Fike. Brennan and I became friends after I attended Clemson as he and my high school Football coach were from the same high school in PA. Jim was a great looking guy who, I believe, went into the apparel business after Clemson and was very successful. Great basketball player, greater guy.

You're correct that Jim went into the apparel business. I was in school with Jim and also shared his interest in making a living in the apparel business. We spent many days together at the Southeastern Mens' apparel Club Mens Shows at the Charlotte Coliseum.

You're also correct that he was a good shooter.... he had a rainbow jumper from long range that was beautiful to watch.

Talking about "older" CU players, do you remember a ACC Zebra/ref named Lenny Wirtz/Wirts. This little 5-7" (on a tall day) thought he invented basketball and wrote all the rules. Lenny was the only man I've ever seen who could strutt while standing still. Seriously over demonstrative while blowing the whistle (which he did very often) on every call. A peachock whould hang his head in shame, because old Lenny was the circus strutter.

I was good friends with Mike Browning. Dude was smooth in the paint and loved to finger-roll above the rim vs slam dunking..

Ole Dickie Foster was RED faced after 2 trips up/down the court. He only had ONE lung.

I lived off campus and had Tree Rollins and Wayne Croft over to my cabin on Lake Hartwell for dinner one night (out of BB season). I'll say no more other than they could eat.
