Older folks help

Jul 11, 2012, 4:06 PM

I understand that Georgia is a rival, but as a younger guy, I have not had the opportunity to be around the rivalry much. I am around the USC rivalry constantly, so I have a really good feel for that one, but enlighten me on the rivalry with the dawgs.

Re: Older folks help

They dominated us historically, but in the '80s the record was something like 4-4-1, which is when the rivalry was at its most fierce.

I'm not an older guy but I know that much.

mouth football. You could almost depend on a field goal settling the game. Nobody in their right minds would give you either team and three points.

Re: That was back when Clemson played at the top of smash...

We were the first team to play and to beat UGa after their 1980 NC, they then returned the favor and beat us to open the 82 season. If I remember correctly we went 5-5-2 with the Dawgs between 80 and 92.

At leat two of the games were won by last play 60 yard FG's. One by Butler for UGa and one by Treadwell to beat them.

Their fans are obnoxious...in a bad way. When I was a student @ Clemson and went to one of the games in Athens...you would get cursed as you walked past their fans...with plenty of red around their necks. They would throw empty liquor bottles off the upper deck as well.

UGA was a #### of a rivalry back in the day.............

Jul 11, 2012, 4:16 PM

When you went to Athens as a fan you were treading in dangerous territory.

I guess the thing that separates the two rivalries for me is that at least UGA has some tradition. If you beat them at least you felt you accomplished something. And if they won, you hated it but they are a good program.

USuC on the other hand has no tradition and you expect to beat them. You just don't want to lose to a inferior program!

Athens is a great town unless it's game day and you're pulling for the opposite team. I can't stand UGA. But once a year I say GO DAWGS. ;)

Re: UGA was a #### of a rivalry back in the day.............

Jul 11, 2012, 4:45 PM

Agree with this assessment. My only trip to Athens was September, 1977 when we won 7-6 on a wet field. Pell was head coach and it was the start of something special.

Went with a buddy of mine and we sat in a primarily Georgia section. It's the only opposing place I've been where I wasn't sure I was going to make it to my car without punches thrown.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But wasn't it sweet to walk out from.............

Jul 11, 2012, 5:02 PM

"Between the Hedges" with a win!

I remember that one, but the one of my favorite games was when Treadwell kicked the FG to beat them. Wow that place went silent!

Of course there is also Kevin "effing" Butler and his 80 yard FG to beat us. I was behind the goalpost and it might have actually went 80 lol.

I sat beside William Perry the year that we beat them in all aspects of the game. Well except Scott Woerner had a career game on punt returns and interceptions. Oh and Buck Belue shot the CU endzone a birdie from the huddle. He can burn in #### as for as I'm concerned.

The worst one was the Labor Day night game after our National Championship. I'm just glad I made it out of Athens alive.

Jul 11, 2012, 4:37 PM

Both sides hated each other & had successful programs.

SCAR took a back seat because we dominated them.

To give you an example of the vitriol when you went to games in Athens men, women & children would all yell "Clemson sux" or "Rednecks". Those were the sober ones. The drunks would yell "F*ck you" & throw things at you. Keep in mind I was kid during most of the decade.

I was at the first night game in UGA history, the 1982 Clemson/UGA game. By far the most hostile, rude crowd I've ever experienced.

We won in 1974 - first time since the 1950's. We then beat UGA in '77 7-6, This was my first real encounter with local Dawgs (move to Atlanta that summer just before my freshman year) - the barking gets old fast.

1980 we gave the game away and they won the National championship. We all know what happen in 1981 - Dawg Gone!

Hated to go to work after the '82 Labor Day game and the Butler field goal in '84 made me sick, but we did get some revenge with David Treadwell 2 consecutive years.

To the tune of "Georgia on my mind" - Georgia, Georgia, Georgia won't you bit my A$$!

Don't forget, "To h#ll, to h#ll, to h#ll with Georgia, the cesspool of the South!!!" My alltime favorite!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think there were 2 reasons the rivalry was so intense.

Jul 11, 2012, 4:41 PM

In the old days of the ACC, under coach Howard, we simply could not recruit head-to-head with UGA and other SEC schools (for the most part), but that began to change about the time of Red Parker. He brought in some big name recruits, and though he lost a lot of games, he really started the turn-around for Clemson. Under Charlie Pell we were really going after and landing more highly regarded players, and because of our close proximity to Athens, we were naturally butting heads with UGA more and more in recruiting. This head-to-head battle with UGA for players escalated under Danny Ford, with epic battles for the services of Heschel Walker and John Johnson, among others. We were really infringing on what had once been all theirs.

Then, add to that, both programs were on the rise at the same time and won National Championships a year apart, and continued to be contenders throughout the decade of the 80's.

All of that made for some very fierce battles that both sides took very personally, and made for some unforgetable football.

back in the 60's and 70's we did win a few....the one I remember the most was 1974 when we beat GT and UGA at home back to back..Mike O'Cain beat them by himself...Back then Auburn used to just kill us, Bama and UGA just scraped by. Uga came into the upstate and got guys like Steve Farnsworth, Steve Greer and pat roderique...they got the guys UT did not get...in 1977, Charley Pell beat them 7-6 in Sanford Stadium, which no one , not even Jim Phillips could find a record of us ever beating them there...we did beat them in Athens in 1914...We were favored in 1978 and UGA beat us 12-0...really tough to get out of there that year. 1979 Billy Lot beat them by himself and the 80s came along and we played pretty even. The recruiting in SC came to be at stake...UGA fans are obnoxious and are a gang of red necks, and like we used to say in the 80's, the game we hated to play was UGA and the one we hated to lose was USC...the rivalry should not have ended...you have to give Dooley his due they were good back then.

It was great. We always went to the CU/UGA games at Clemson by houseboat. We started north of Augusta and came up with the boat decorated in both colors and logos.
Boy, those Georgia fans are sore losers. They always sat together inside when they lost. When they won, they were so drunk and obnoxious, the Clemson people sat inside to get away from them.

Jul 11, 2012, 5:13 PM

UGA beat us the year before we won the NC and they won the NC.
We won the next year and we won the NC.

Anyone remember the UGA FG kicker - "The Butler did it"? His son punts for UGA now I think.

UGA/CLEMSON is a natural rivalry that the ACC & SEC just won't promote enough. You can pack the house EVERY game. Too bad - 'cause those are some intense games IMO. I wish we played them every year.

My friend had "Go Walker My Dawg" bumper sticker. He was NOT happy when we beat UGA (and Walker) that year. We did not speak all the way to the car. He threw his program across the top of the car at me. Funny as crap. He was ticked. :)

Still, they are very rabid fans as we are...love their football...put out good to great hard-hitting teams...and have one of the prettiest stadiums in American..especially at night under the lights & hedges (which we had too until Coach Howard had them cut down due to too much maintenance...HIM).

Jul 11, 2012, 7:10 PM

Back in the mid-60's, i would go to Athens on Friday for the Freshmen game and then go out to dinner with Ga fans and have a great time. Then, I moved to South Ga in 69 after marriage and military. Most of my friends here are Dawgs or Noles.

Things weren't all that bad until we started beating them as often as they beat us, that's when it got heated. I took my young son to a game in Athens, the one where Butler kicked the 60 yd field goal to beat us. All during the game, we said nothing while the ga fans around us were cussing Dooley and moaning and groaning! Then came the kick and all of a sudden they were taunting us and acting as if they were national champs. I went back once more and had the pleasure of seeing us win and as I exited the stadium I'll never forget an old man still sitting with his wife and looking as though he would cry. Somehow I did not feel any pity. I remember at one of those games listening to the ga radio station on my way into Athens. One of the announcers was saying how much he hated Clemson. What a bunch of losers.

I don't mind getting beaten by a better team, but Lord help me, the dawgs ain't the better team and the majority of their fans are classless, as are Noles fans.

Once during the 90's while driving thru Athens with my wife, a car pulled up beside me and honked. I looked over and he flashed his age and IQ. I guess he saw my Clemson sticker! Yep, real class!
