Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Apr 22, 2017, 12:30 PM

It's definitely our weakest area.

And sure you could say "what about Mitch Hyatt" but his uncle played for the '81 team. And he was our first and only 5* OL commit.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jackson Carman commitment may shut you up. Stay tuned***

OL is the hardest position to predict who is going

Apr 22, 2017, 12:38 PM

to be good. With that being said, our OL recruiting has been better the past few years. We've gotten good talent but been hit with Fruh transferring quite a few OL that had career ending injuries.

Like JK Jay. He would have been a stud I think. I believe it is getting better, but the elite kids need to know we put kids in the NFL. That is changing and with Crowder. Hyatt and Guerrimo it will.

Lost me on this one, past 2-3 years OL recruiting has heated up. If anything I think we have struggled recruiting at RB since Burton Burns left.

Agreed.

It seems harder to convince these RBs today to commit to the spread. They wanna run the pro style for the touches.

maybe the OP has been in a coma since the Tommy Bowden area? We have improved 100% since then, I wish we could land a 5 star RB to run behind them. We haven't been able to bag a blue chip back in a while.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Have YOU been in a coma? We literally got a 5 star back with Feaster. And I would consider Etienne a blue chip.

Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Apr 23, 2017, 10:56 AM [ in reply to Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting ]

I would disagree, but maybe only because of the stars beside their names. On field production has changed due to change in scheme. Feaster was a 5 star by some and Gallman, Choice and Feaster were all 4 stars. As was Tyshon Dye and Zac Brooks. I think we hAve good rbs just not elite.......yet.

We have a large number of 4 stars...

so that doesn't really worry me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Apr 22, 2017, 12:40 PM

Don't worry big guy we about to reel in another 5 star OT in carmen who might have more upside bc of his size and technique he already has. Oh and if that's not enough we most likely going to get the #1 or #2 OG in the country maybe both and all 3 of those guys with Carmen Salyer and I forget the new 1 OG but he also has us in his top all are top 30 overall recruits

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Apr 22, 2017, 12:56 PM

I would absolutely love that, but seems pretty optimistic. I think we can win Carman but it's gonna be hard for us to steal Salyer from his home state team whose run-based offense is perfect for OGs.

I never count Dabo out though. And there's still so much time.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It's assuming a lot but I think the reason asiedu went to

Apr 22, 2017, 2:18 PM

Definitely not the reason, but ok. We will always be fine, we seem to develop players well, and our system doesn't require extended pass protection. Just curious as to our history of OL

are there any steakhouses in Clemson?

Consider this: The Crimson Tide have TWO Japanese steakhouses on either side of a Longhorn's less than a mile from the football stadium. Not to mention a Texas Roadhouse, numerous BBQ joints, and an upscale steakhouse at the other end.

Something to think about.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: All the recruiting has been upgraded.

Apr 22, 2017, 1:06 PM

right. There's obviously an overall improvement, in all positions, thus the national championship.

But I'm mostly referring to Nana, Richard Gouriage, Max Wray...these are guys we can seem to excite and swing our way some, but ultimately we lose out on them.

And other than Carman and Gouriage, who are we looking at?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: All the recruiting has been upgraded.

Apr 22, 2017, 1:20 PM

We will prob only talk one tackle in Carmen which I think we land but we are also going after the #1 and #2 OG in the country one by last name Sayler he's I think espn 29 overall he has us in his top group and is one XT is recruiting to clemson and the new #1 OG deontrey Hill who is top 25 has us in his top group as well I think we land one of those 2 best guards as well as the best OT in country in Carmen. I don't know the numbers on how many we taking but land Carmen and Salyer/Hill and it will be a truly stout oline class maybe one of our best even with small number. Just wait more big boys on the oline are coming. Not to mention our oline recruiting has gotten far better we just signed an under armor all American in the 17 class so idk what your really even talking about

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We didn't miss on Nana and Wray

Apr 22, 2017, 1:57 PM [ in reply to Re: All the recruiting has been upgraded. ]

A few prospects higher on our board with the limited number of open scholarships available.Wray wouldn't have been(too much DADDY BS) an option and Nana would be the second option ,he chose not to wait.

Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Apr 22, 2017, 2:27 PM

You guys are clearly confusing my question of the HISTORY of RECRUITING with DEVELOPMENT. No doubt our coaches have been to develop our players, and our scheme helps OL with a mobile QB and getting the ball quickly away from the opponents DL

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Apr 22, 2017, 2:46 PM

Some may be but I'm not we have landed some really high rated guys past few classes. Yes it started with Hyatt but it didn't stop there like I said we just signed under armor all American guard in 17 class also got dehood who was a good 4 star and not to mention 6-7 320+. Simpson and pollard were high 4 stars jake was a top 150 guy. And this class we will most likely land two 5 stars depending on what service with Carmen as 5 star and Salyer and hill 5 star in some services very high 4 stars top 30 in espn so yes we are RECRUITING AND DEVELOPING!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Apr 22, 2017, 3:06 PM

Yes we are in the running for Sayler and Hill, which is huge for our program, but where do you see "we will most likely land" them? Because based on interviews, 247, and friends in Georgia, those two are Georgia leans due to their offense and home state. Not saying we won't end up with either, but y'all talk like it's a given.

As for Carman, I think that'll be a long battle that we have a great shot wth.

I know one thing, Georgia is building a fortress. I was just taking a look at the UGA spring game and that Netori Johnson recruit is there. 341lbs and doing cartwheels? I definitely wouldn't be upset with a few of those.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right now, according to 247,there's FIVE 5* OL in the Nation.

Apr 22, 2017, 2:39 PM

There's also 36 fours star Olinemen, making the total in the whole US of 4&5 star offensive linemen 41.

That's OL(OT's'OG's & C's combined).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why does Clemson struggle with OL recruiting

Apr 23, 2017, 9:49 AM

How far back in history was your question meant to go? Here are some recruiting rankings for OL since 2013:

#2 OT #18 nationally
#7 OT #89 nationally
#11 OT #116 nationally
#5 OG #125 nationally
#12 OG #157 nationally
#10 OG #173 nationally
#14 OG #232 nationally

This doesn't look like poor OL recruiting to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't worry....

Apr 28, 2017, 1:51 PM

with Coach BOOM, you are going to land some great O-line talent soon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tyrone Crowder, John Simpson, Jake Fruhmorgen

Apr 28, 2017, 2:32 PM

were all highly rated by the recruiting sites. it's also clear that recruiting sites struggle most with OL and we've done a great job developing talent that we get.

as a followup question for you, will any USC players be drafted tonight? I noticed that none were drafted last night

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How many 5-star high school OL are available each year?

Apr 28, 2017, 2:48 PM

There are just not that many to begin with.

There are only 11 OL total in the entire Rivals Top-100 for 2017.

Of those, there are only three 5-star OL listed and we're well positioned on two of them.
