OL - consistent nastiness needed!

Nov 12, 2018, 1:29 PM

A bit of a nit-pick; but true nonetheless! Our OL has done a tremendous job for the opponents we have faced so far! I don't however see that play after play nasty we will need if we want to get to where we want to be.
Lots of play calling questions.
QB questions/concerns.
RB patience questions.

None of that matters if we aren't a good blocking team. Pass pro and run blocking by the interior OL and WR's is a must in any offense. It will need to be gritty and nasty for CU if we hope to beat some of the opponents we would likely play in a playoff game. We can get away with not being nasty aggressive versus Wake or UNC; b/c we can make up the difference in a play! Or just out athlete them somewhere else. We must have it on the OL starting against Duke.

Yes, we are averaging a ton of points per game. But again, against who? This is not to bash or criticize; it's just a: "be good to see us get more consistently nasty regarding blocking"!

The WR's too on those screens must get in front of someone at least or that DB will blow up those plays. Or worse; pick off a pass! Blocking well helps.

Etienne can still get his against a stacked box - "if it's blocked well"! Tom Osborne and Nebraska use to all but tell you exactly where they were going to run against your stacked box and still manage 5-8 yards often! Block it well and it just doesn't matter! WE BLOCK WELL AT MOMENTS; but sometimes have lapses!
I mention this now, b/c why wait to start stressing this. Some of the scoring drives and points we left out there can be DIRECTLY ATTRIBUTED TO SOFT BLOCKING! Whether it's a sack or hurry on the QB or a drive that stalled out b/c we couldn't pick up 2 yards and the back got TFL or a WR or Bubble screen that was blown up and we were stopped on short yardage. Those plays if executed well by "ALL parties" including the defense should still gain 3 yards! And no matter how talented a QB is or a WR is or a RB; if they are on their back before they ever really had a chance then it doesn't matter. Nasty road-grader mentality on those plays was needed. We have the guys to do it and I believe they will. It's a "want to thing" and a "will thing" to go move someone who does not want to be moved!!!!!!!
When your competition steps up and ratchets up; the difference in winning or losing those is "in the details"!

Nastiness more often by the offense regarding blocking would be a great start.

Go Tigers! Get Grimy! Get your lunch-pale minds in place the rest of the way and Move folks more consistently. Especially on short yardage!

What is our 3rd down efficiency for the year?

I saw Caldwell read a couple of them the riot act for pulling and hitting no one when there were two guys that could have been hit with a little effort. I dont like our lack of push in most third and 1 or 2 situations. NOw I will also say Anchrum was overmatched Saturday but he continued to battle and got a bit better as the game went on. OL is better than it used to be but still needs work and still seems to be a problem for us in recruiting

74TIGER

Agreed 100% on your last sentence! It boggles my mind why that is too. Anyone who has been around football for any length of time will tell you your OL sets the tone for the rest of the team. If they are soft; then a coach has to call plays(finesse) they can handle. If they are just road graters and will plow their own mom(physical)if she was an opponent you can call much more aggressive game plans! If a kid isn't a five star or 4 star kid; to me they instantly have to red shirt. No questions and we tell them up front. Hey, we like what you can be potentially; but you aren't there yet. Give us a year and give us your commitment to get better and you can maybe start one day for one of the absolute football programs in the country"!

74Tiger do you think it's because our coaches don't like how the star system grades players? I think it could have something to do with it. The big time OL coming out of H.S. are already bigger and stronger! Guys who have maybe reached their ceiling! We must feel like there are other guys to be had who can be built up the Clemson way and coached up into what we need.

Again, not complaining, we could still do well against anybody how we are as it stands today. But, if I had to pick one area, that would be it. Some of the other talk on TNET is all for nothing unless plays get blocked well enough; "IT Ain't Happening"!

If you block well for the type of talent we have at the skill positions: "you give yourself a chance for success against anybody including the folks in the big bus"!

Go Tigers!

Great post. I've said it before I do not condone penalties but when our OL gets an unnecessary roughness penalty I feel good about it. I want that punch em in the face mentality every play. I know the guys we have can do it too.

Hypocritease

Exactly! I believe in our OL. I believe in our coaches. The players and coaches are all very confident in their ability; I am too!

The consistent; "i'm about to attack you like a cash cow on black friday" attitude on every play "like they desperate" is what I mean.

Stanford OL had this going for this for a long time. Bamer OL for a while. We should b/c we are a physical team. But, sometimes it seems we get out of that frame of mind and start trying to Oregon people instead of 1980's Nebraska folks on the OL! Smash some folks and all the other stuff(on offense ) will fall in line like a brand new zipper!

I agree with you 100%. I like the Stanford and Bama refierences as well as the Oregon finesse. I grew up in B1G country so I saw historic OL battles which many think are boring. Trench warfare is football.

Only 2 2018 signees were OL and, so far, only 1 2019 commit. Tough position to recruit.

Great post! Keep posting it. I have seen enough of the 315 to 325lb marshmallows. It's time they stood up and blocked to the whistle. I don't see enough nasty from those guys. They better find it quickly. To win a Natty is on their shoulders. We are dang near the best in the country at every other position. If they play with more aggression this team is unstoppable. Maybe we fans can #### them off enough. I want 250yds a game the rest of the way.

OL is the foundation of every great football team

Nov 12, 2018, 9:10 PM

It's amazing how many average fans don't understand this. We have to start a tradition of first round linemen on offense to go along with our defensive guys.

TigerDominance I concur!

Some teams have dominant OL play but average skill players or maybe 1 or 2 only( see Wisconsin, Stanford,Michigan St).

Or teams have really talented skill guys but no OL. ( see Fla. St currently, Fla., So Cal currently). None of that talent can ever be fully unleashed b/c a QB can't throw from his back! A RB unless he is Barry Sanders can't gain yards if he is being tackled in the backfield. Obviously if a QB is on his back all the great WR play in the world is useless!

To that end - I think the staff has done a good job of getting servicable guys in the line up. Mitch Hyatt will most likely be a 1st rounder at LT and a long time starter in the NFL. Beyond him how many OL Tigers do we have with NFL potential? Taylor Hearn is on the Panthers practice squad is is doing well.

I could not possibly agree with how you put it more though. We must get better recruiting this position. Jackson Carman was a nice get!

Go Tigers!

in our coaches defense, it's the most difficult position to evaluate coming out of high school. Some of the high rated guys never pan out. I think we need to at least use an extra 1-2 scholarships at OL than we have in the past. This could only help our "hit" rate.
