A couple of weeks ago. I posted after watching the last two games that Oklahoma played this year. I was not impressed with their team. Today, I decided to watch them play Texas, a team that beat them early in the year. I’m even less impressed. My take on the game:

Oklahoma did not handle the pressure well. I really didn’t understand why teams that played Oklahoma later in the year didn’t blitz more often. Texas did, and sacked Mayfield 6 times and held him to -5 yards on 18 carries. That’s a good sign for us. By the way, Mayfield is loose with the ball when he scrambles. I expect us to cause at least one fumble with Mayfield.

Oklahoma had only 15 yards in the first quarter, only 3 points in the first half and only scored 2 touchdowns the whole game. Again, pressure on the QB and a good rush defense pretty much shut them down. Perrine and Mixon only gained a “combined total” of 60 yards for the entire game. Mayfield was 20 for 28 for 211 yards. They were 3 for 12 on third down conversions. Not much of an offensive powerhouse.

Oklahoma reminded me of the same team we played last year. They still do not tackle well in open space. Sweeps around the end and runs off tackle were very productive against them. Texas, who was 0-4 at the time, ran for 321 yards against Oklahoma. This was a team that you could plan your defense against the run, and still Texas put up over 300 yards rushing against Oklahoma. Quarterback runs were very successful against Oklahoma’s defense, so Watson should have a good day. Gallman may have a great day if we block well and open up the run with our passing game. Oklahoma created ZERO turnovers in this game against a team that had 4 straight losses.

Texas threw for 9/12 for 55 yards. You can’t tell much from that stat except a non-throwing QB still threw for a 75% completion rate with zero interceptions. I think we can do a little better than that.

Don’t get me wrong, Mayfield is a good scrambler and has the skill set to break one or two on us for good gains and complete passes on the run. Perrine and Mixon can run the ball well when they get past the line of scrimmage, but I’m sure Brent will have a plan for all of that.

If our DBs play great man-to-man, we should be able to sack Mayfield a half-dozen times as well as have several tackles for loss on the running backs. I would imagine Bob Stoops will have some plan to counter Brent’s pressure defense, maybe quick slant passes, reverses, flea flickers, etc. We should be able to pick a few passes off if Mayfield gets frustrated enough.

On offense, if our passing game is clicking, we should have a great day. I think our normal mix of runs and passes will keep Oklahoma’s defense on their toes. Not sure their DBs can stay with our receivers, and if they do, that should open up the shorter passes to Leggett and McCloud and make for longer runs with Gallman when he breaks free.

I think Oklahoma may score one or two touchdowns on us, but there’s no way they will stop our offense. I expect the game to be much like last years, with maybe a few more points scored by Oklahoma.

Can’t wait until New Year’s Eve!!!

Good analysis, and I agree on all except our D will

give up possibly one big run each to Mixon, Perine, and Mayfield, and with a few short fields cause of our crummy special teams, I see OU scoring at least 28. My guess on the final will be 38-31 good guys...

I agree. I think this will be a 31-38 to 38-45 affair. Like the acccg

Not sure if it's hilarious or pitiful but when you read some of the analyses on that game, instead of giving the Texas defense credit they attribute the loss mostly to the OU offensive line tipping defenders as to the play calling based on stance / foot positioning. True story.

I don't know if you can read a lot into Oklahoma's offense from this game. Oklahoma abandoned the run game early and put way too much pressure on Mayfield. I think you're right that Clemson will put pressure on him and will be successful, pressuring QB's is what BV does. Other teams did use this game plan, and just failed to make tackles...looking at you Tennessee and TCU. I guess you could say that's as much Mayfield making plays as the defense executing poorly.

I think this game is much more indicative of the success Clemson's offense can have. There's no way you can convince me that Watson isn't better than Heard and Gallman isn't better than Gray. Way too little is being made of the fact that Oklahoma's best BIG XII defense didn't have to face any of the conference's top QB's. As someone else said, they fail to tackle in space. Spread them out and run until they prove they can stop it.

All I can say about this game is that OU woke up after it. Switched up the Oline and started playing with a fire that hasnt let out yet. They were not very good before that game and it showed. I mean really this is not the same team now as they were a couple months ago thankfully

If you say so man. But It's pretty clear to me they have developed a chemistry they did not have to start out the season.

OU definitely got it together after the tex game, however

Dec 22, 2015, 2:36 PM

as the OP said, when I've watched OU games from the last half of the season I haven't been very impressed. I'm more impressed with your D than your O, but not by much.

We'll give up some big plays/points but I'm not worried about our chances. Will probably be a shoot-out. Turnover margin will be a big factor.

That's okay, it's not really necessary to be impressed by them. I mean why would you be impressed with an offense averaging 52 ppg and 592 ypg since they pulled their heads out of their @sses and woke up? From week to week that's hard to do without a letdown no matter who you play. I havent been too impressed with the clemson defense in 4 of the last 6 games. So maybe it will end up being a shootout. But OU's offense isnt all that good, not impressive, so I dont see how they will be able to make it a shootout over the vaunted clemson defense. I dont know how the game will go, it could be defensive too. Both teams are top 5 in defensive efficiency, which to me is impressive for OU considering all the offense they face from week to week.

Mayfield is good, but I think he is just luckier than Williams and Brissett.
If BB10 and SL90 have anything to say about it, that luck will expire about 4pm on 12/31/15.

Somewhere on the OK message boards...

Dec 22, 2015, 3:38 PM

Some fan has posted a breakdown of our game vs South Carolina and used it to justify why they will destroy us.

Picking the outlier game for analysis isn't really useful. You've picked the least likely outcome for Oklahoma (that they play like they played vs Texas) and ignored 10 other games where they've looked pretty good. Including the more recent games where they've shown no signs of playing like a team that could lose to Texas.

We may very well win this game but it's not because we are watching the Texas game film and hoping they play like crap.

The analysis was strictly from the UT game

Dec 22, 2015, 4:44 PM

I've seen them play Baylor and Tennessee. I'd say that they, like us, have looked really good at times and not so good at others.

Their running game scares me as we have been getting gashed for several big gains per game going back to the FSU game. I will say that I don't think they've played a defense as stout as ours up front or an offense as good as ours. They had the benefit of catching Baylor and TCU with backup QB's.

However to say you aren't impressed with them from analysis from their one loss isn't rational. They didn't play like that all year.

Re: Somewhere on the OK message boards...

Dec 22, 2015, 5:59 PM

I watched the last two games Oklahoma played this year and posted my opinion about how they looked against those two teams (It was two of these teams: Baylor, Oklahoma State, and TCU). The last three games of their season, they played teams that had been good during the year, but were without their starting quarterbacks. I think it would be safe to say they were not playing offenses that will be as good as ours will be New Year's Eve. The three games before that, they played three of the worst defenses in the nation (#127, #126, and #104). I think playing Clemson will be a big difference than playing those three teams.

After about a week from my first post, I decided to watch an earlier game. Like you, I don't think early games really give an indication about a team that's in the playoffs, but I wanted to see what Texas had done that I hadn't seen in Oklahoma's final two games. What did Texas do to beat Oklahoma that nobody else was able to do. To me, it was defense. They pressured the QB and the backs the whole game, plus, they knew how to tackle.

I won't reiterate all the things that I saw and have already posted. We all have our opinions. The game will speak for itself in just a few days. I hope I'm right and the Tigers dominate the Sooners.

The wife can't handle the close games too well, she tears up the living room furniture unless we're in Death Valley! Let's hope our Tigers get off to a quick lead and stay a few touchdowns ahead the whole game!

Re: Somewhere on the OK message boards...

Dec 23, 2015, 10:06 AM

I don't disagree with that assessment regarding the Texas ability to pressure the QB however I believe OK shuffled their offensive line after that game and no other team has really been able to duplicate that pressure since that game.

I think the interesting thing about the playoff this year is that all 4 teams have ways to beat you and things that can be exploited. To me there isn't a dominant playoff team this season.

And I apologize for missing your other post regarding the other games. Admittedly I haven't watched OK in some of the games you mention so I should probably defer to your judgement on those, but I will say when I have watched them play they have looked solid in all facets of the game and will likely be the most difficult opponent we've faced since Notre Dame in terms of skill and athleticism on both sides of the ball.

Having seen a number of games this year I took at a look at the UNC and NCState boxscore (NCState because both teams played clean) and while it was apparent that neither of these teams had the defenses to match Clemson the one thing that stood out was how quickly they both scored. There were no long grind it out drives (that probably is why you are so successful on 3rd down) but the scoring drives for the most part were around 2 mins. Can you attribute that to playing "prevent" or does BV still take some risks or can this defense get hit by a big play?

flag link

My take on this

Dec 23, 2015, 1:38 PM

It's a couple of things

1. Boulware and Goodson are great athletes but both overplay their position at times. Teams have noticed this and started to take advantage of them with misdirection plays. Also neither appears to be great at pass defense in the middle of the field.

2. The other problem we have is that we miss a Vic Beasley type edge speed rusher. Lawson is great but he isn't a pure edge rusher like Beasely was. He's a great everydown DE and I prefer him on 75% of the plays, but on 3rd and long or when teams are down late and have to throw, we don't have the same pass rush we had last year from the D-line. As a result I've seen BV have to call a lot more agressive blitz schemes to try to get to the QB (corners and safeties blitzing). This is exposing our secondary to making coverage mistakes which they have done.

I really haven't seen us play that much prevent. It's just a function of teams getting into that pass first scheme and we don't have the edge rusher to pressure the QB. BV to his credit prefers to attack the QB rather than rush 4 and die a slow death, but that also leads to more open space on the field.

flag link

Re: My take on this

Dec 23, 2015, 2:19 PM

So when BV was at OU one of the big complaints was the fact that he gave away middle of the field, especially in shallow crossing routes, and in the pass happy B12 it was starting to kill OU. Also he seemed to like run stopping LBs and as the B12 evolved to a pass first league it began to expose OU. Statistically his defenses looked good, but lost the big games.

I was going to ask if thought BV was going to keep with rushing 4. If Clemson sits in the base 4-3 OU will have some issues rushing the ball, especially if they try to pound it up the middle, and because your LBs fly to the ball. I think LR will tempt BV to blitz through formation, and use Mayfields smarts to run the ball in that vacated space.

Re: Somewhere on the OK message boards...

Dec 23, 2015, 1:57 PM

We have given up a lot of big plays this year , some for TD's . Our defense has had some bad moments . The good is that they have played outstanding football most of the season , and we have won all of the games where they were a little off .
This defense is athletic , smart and aggressive . BV is a helluva coach and we can all agree that #1 and #8 overall defensive rankings in the last 2 seasons will attest to that.
If Oklahoma thinks that they have played a defense that they can point to that is " as good as Clemson's defense " I'd love to see it, but they can't.
They saw it last year , and yeah yeah we know that this Sooner team is a different team and the pundits all love their new offensive dealio ...but ultimately , they are facing a team that has seen the likes of them at least 3 times this year .
Prepare to meet the end of the Sooner's season , in just about 8 days .

Re: Somewhere on the OK message boards...

Dec 23, 2015, 2:07 PM

Oh I am sure the Clemson defense is all that and more, but when you see drives of less than 2 mins and big plays there is something there to exploit. One school of thought is you haven't faced an offense with as many skilled players that can exploit those mistakes in either scheme or performance.

The 40-6 argument is tired - OU was a beat team physically and mentally (more important) coming into the game, losing to your cross state rival they way OU did made most long for the season to be over. Schematically the offense is completely different, and on defense they finally have the players to make the 3-4 work.

Dec 23, 2015, 10:33 AM

When teams blitz BM throws to a receiver who is running a short route. He's really accurate with quick passes which are mid range.

That plays to our strengths. We don't have to blitz to put pressure on him which leaves guys to cover the underneath pass and catch a QB on a scramble. Our linemen are fast enough to torture him too. When we control the edges our interior linemen chase him backward. I just hope the officials look for and call holding.

We have to stop this team before they get inside the 10. We can't give them field position over and over. They can't sustain long drives against our defense. If we don't do well on getting field position the game will be dramatic. I don't want to out run them on the scoreboard, I want to hold their score below 20. I don't see that as a problem.
