OKLA paper talking about how complex Venables D is...

Aug 23, 2012, 7:25 PM

Sounds exactly like our complaints under Steele. Players not knowing where to line up, etc.

Of course, I think every time you have a coaching change, you never hear that you are making something "more complex". You always hear "simplifying". So take it with a grain a salt. Just found it interesting.

Yeah, it is interesting and ironic. Pretty huge props to Venables for training his LBs to be pro-ready in the article.
As far as OU's defense last year, Barry Switzer said their talent was down, especially along the DL. I tend to believe Switzer more than a bunch of media types.
As far as the whole "complex defense" theme goes, Saban supposedly runs a complex scheme and his teams execute it.

Everything is complex to Oklahomans!

:)

Wow! That's the same thing Venables is doing for us

I think this is justification when you have a defensive coaching change. It give the fans confidence that things are going to be different this time. Of course the new guy is better!

A few of the problems I saw with the defense last year was:

1. Injuries at certain points of the season.

2. To go along with 1. A lot of people was shifted around and some played positions that they normally don't play.

3. Half time adjustments. If any were made, it didn't seem like it worked.

I know that a lot of people say "well...he was going up against RGIII and the top offenses in the country". That is true but OU had the talent to play better defense even with injuries. Overall it was a disappointing season but even disappointing with how the defense played.

It will be interesting to see some half time adjustments. Or maybe it is impossible to adjust to the zone read.

Hopefully we don't need to and they have to try.***

Last year Our offense kept us in the game (Texas Tech, Baylor) but the defense just couldn't stop either of them. I know in the Texas Tech game, their QB keep throwing to the same WR over and over and the defense just couldn't comprehend that. It was a combination of poor playing and poor coaching.

In the 2nd half of OU's game against TTech…..

the Red Raiders offense didn't do as well as it did in the first half. OU's offense had trouble the whole game against TTech and just never played consistent.

They had the best D in the big 12

Was it just me or did the defense look to be constantly looking to the sidelines and then trying to change up to match some perceived set up by the offense at the last second?

At times they did look confused.

Clemson or OU? If OU, then yes at times.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For Clemson yes, that was the situation every single game***

"simpliyfing" is just a generic term, reporters use…..

Aug 24, 2012, 1:17 AM

when an offense or defense makes a change. The problem under Kevin Steele was that we played way too much man coverage and the defensive calls were alway late getting in, so we were always late in getting lined up. The defensive players were always waving at the coaches to get the play in. Bottom line Kevin Steele just wasn't Dcoord. material. He may be good as a position coach, but not as a coordinator.

Also, if Venables defense was so complex, why was it good for so many years. Even having a down year last year, they were still at least the 2nd best defense in their conference. So if you use some intelligence, maybe, just maybe their defense not being as good last year had to do with how many good offenses were in the Big 12, or maybe they just were either young or not as talented on defense. Those scenario's or combination of are more likely, than a supposed "complex" scheme.

By the way, when Mike Stoops left for Zona, it was said that Venables was the brains behind the operation anyway. And OU's defense continued to be very good under Venables direction long after Mike Stoops had left.

Agreed and we really just need to listen to the players

Aug 24, 2012, 8:45 AM

They say that while it's not that much different then Steele's scheme, which is true, it's got less lingo. The LBs have been monsters all spring and summer and with the wealth of talent at the position it could quickly become a strength for us again. The DL is young but Watson, Williams, and Jarrett all play with chips on their shoulders and the trenches are more about attitude then almost anything else. Watkins and Reader seem to be coming along just fine so I'm not that worried about the DL position.
The biggest question mark is DB. We have the bodies but unproven depth at the CB position. Still as long as they stay healthy they should be alright.
