OK vs NC

Dec 23, 2015, 10:55 PM

I'm thinking okie and the tarholes are pretty similar. Both have high-powered offenses, both have inexplicable losses to terrible teams, and both are less solid on defense. If that's the case, we should torch the Sooners. Thoughts?

A Tiger man needs no introduction...

I've thought this for awhile

Dec 23, 2015, 11:20 PM

I think UNC's QB is more easily rattled which both we and Usuc took advantage of. It will be interesting to see how UNC does against Baylor next Tuesday. I think we handle OK but I believe it will be more challenging than UNC....but then again we should have beaten UNC by 20+ so maybe we beat OK by 7-10.

I have a similar thought.... I think Williams is the more naturally gifted talent at QB but that Mayfield is tougher mentally which gives him the edge.

I think UNC has more WR talent as a group.

I think at the very least the RB talent is even.

I think UNC's oline might be better.

I think OU has a lot more talent on defense.

All in all they are very similar with OU having an edge IMHO at QB and in Defense which is why I would say they are clearly the betree team (but clearly doesn't mean by a wide margin )

I think OU has better talent than the holes. This game will be a dogfight and the team that plays their A game will win it.

Mayfield > Williams
Shepard < Switzer
Perine < Hood
Pretty sure OU = UNCheat

I think Perine > Hood AND you have to factor Mixon in... Therefore:

OU > UNC

However, I agree with chalie, T1german, et al, that we are gonna have to play a solid game to win.

And we WILL beat OU!

No, Perine = Hood. The stats are nearly identical. In total rushing yards as a team UNC had more than Oklahoma, but with one more game. UNC may have faced tougher run Defenses, debatable.

Okay, since I was going on 'eye test' and not stats, I'll concede that point. And I can't counter concerning D, either.

Again, I think we win - I just think it will be a 'true one score' victory, unlike UNC - who we should have beat by 2 scores (min). Thus, my assessment that OU > UNC. D**n 'eye test' (and blue blood)!

FYI-
Mayfield, correct
Shepard has double the numbers as Switzer and is considered one of the best WRs OU has ever had.
Perine is freshmen all-American and 2/3rd team All American.

These players are better than the baby blue puke players you're comparing them too.

UNC is one of the most overrated teams in America.

As far as them playing a beat up Baylor team without its 1st/2nd QB, 1st RB and 1st WR.. I think Baylor still wins... But idgf.

Its all about OUvsClemson.. Lets get this game going!! :)

Oklahoma is a much better team. NC was good this year, but you have to look at their schedule and how easy it was. We were the only ranked team they played all year. I think if they played our schedule, they would have at least 3 losses.

I just don't understand how most here on tnet are taking Oklahoma so lightly. They are a dang good team. Mayfield is a great qb. They will give us everything we can handle and a win against them will be a great win.

I think most here respect oklahoma....and to compare them to UNC isn't a slap. OU lost to Texas. ...struggled against UT...played against a less than full strength Baylor and a shell of TCU. Given the suspect defenses in the big 12 (statistically speaking) I would wager that UNC would fit in well and have been highly competitive.

Having said that. ....

OU is clearly a better team than UNC. OU has more talent on defense and a better leader at QB (the most important position).

I think the comparison is more about the respect of talent UNC has than a disrespect of OU.

I'm predicting a clemson win 42-35. I could see it being as much as by 10 but I don't think we win by more. I could see a scenario where it looks like we may like it on but OU comes back in second half and makes it a game.

Honestly, I could see several scenarios playing out.

I agree, this game is going to be so close.

I expect Clemson to take the lead early and OU plays catch-up into an epic battle in 4th.
I don't see either team winning by more than 1 possession.

Not a "last one has the ball" type game. Defenses are both sides are good.
But which "team digs deeper to get the W" game. Waiting for that one last big play to spring loose whether its on D or O. Turnover, Busted assignment, or trick play.

I wouldn't personally take OU lightly, but I will call it like I see it, which I think a lot of posters are doing. I don't buy into the whole tarhole "easy" schedule either. If you're easily swayed by propaganda or the 4 letter network you may, but I've seen how tough a team NCST is, and I'd say they are a better team than the TCU with a backup QB that OU played, and almost lost to. I would also say that Pitt is on par with Tennessee, and much better than the Texas team OU lost to. Also, pretty similar to the Baylor with a backup QB that OU played. When it comes to VT, I think they are equivalent to an OKST. The only difference is that the ACC has some decent defenses, and as a whole, I'd rank them at the top amongst power conferences, with the Big 10 a not too distant 2nd. The Big 12 would be 4th IMO.

The difference between OU and the rest of the Big 12...they have a serviceable defense, no one else does. But yes, OU is a dang good team, Mayfield is a great QB and a win against them again would be paramount, but OU hasn't played ANYONE on par with Clemson all year. Clemson has been tested and survived every time. That's the difference between Clemson and OU. I think ND would beat OU, I think FSU would beat OU and I think NC and OU would be a battle. I just don't buy into the OU hype because Mayfield can scramble around and hit an open receiver. He hasn't faced a secondary half as good as ours, with a rested DL and LB corps that will get to him in a hurry. That's the difference in the game...and don't worry DW4 can match points with anyone.

Re: OK vs NC

I think the two teams are quite similar.

QB: Mayfield is a better QB than Williams largely because he doesn't get rattled like MW has a tendency to.
WR: UNC has a better WR corps but OU has a better WR in Shepard.
RB: Hood is probably as good a RB as Perrine but OU has a better RB roster when you add Mixon.
OL: Both have a couple really good players but neither would be considered a strength of the team. As a group, UNC is probably slightly better.
Offense: I give the slight edge to OU because of BM.

DL: OU is better especially against the run.
LB: I've not paid a lot of attention to OU's LB but suspect they are slightly better than UNCs guys.
Secondary: OU's Sanchez is a good player (All-American type) but he like the rest of the DBs take a lot of risks. UNC tend to use a bend-don't break scheme. Generally I think considering the scheme, UNC is better but OU has a better player.
Defense: OU is better.

Obviously even if this is 100% correct it doesn't really mean anything because the transitive property of football has been shown to be a poor predictor of results. I think Clemson is good enough to beat OU and that is all that matters.

+1 Any heard an Update on Jordan Thomas?

Dec 24, 2015, 2:07 PM

It's been mum on him since their AD said they would 'address internally'. Without him, their D secondary would be hurt - he seems to be their shutdown corner.

Re: OK vs NC

Dec 25, 2015, 9:40 AM

IMO - I think most people are not realizing that Mayfield has NOT seen a D like our D in his entire life. All of those plays that Mayfield usually extends because he can scramble so well, will have a shorter lifespan when our D closes so fast. I expect Mayfield to get sacked trying to do that.

What Mayfield can do and do extremely well, is those slants and crossing patterns in the middle of the field. He's horrendous on the long balls, but the short stuff is dangerous. Especially if he connects with Shepard on the slants, or to Mixon out of the backfield. If we lose, it will be due to that. I worry more about Mayfield being able to remain in the pocket than when he tries to scramble to extend the play. I can't wait to see him get sacked on those plays. He's gonna feel the pain if he tries that too often.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think mobile QBs have actually had pretty good success

Dec 25, 2015, 10:03 AM

getting away from pressure, extending plays, and finding open guys against us. That's about the only area we've really gotten hurt in the passing game this year. We don't have a guy like Beasley this year that can chase down QBs, and while our coverage is usually very good in the first ~5 seconds of a play, we tend to get some breakdowns when plays are extended, especially when RBs slip out of the backfield.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK definitely has more talent, especially on D.***
