OK, somebody explain to me...

Sep 10, 2022, 10:25 PM

... were you as disappointed in the defense as I was. No way would I have believed Furman would get 370 yards of offense. I would have set the over/under at 200 and then taken the under.

Furman was good on third down. They moved the ball good in between the 20 yard lines. But only got one TD. I'll take it. The defense was on the field a lot on the second half. It was a short week.

Very simple 2 games in 5 days! The whole team was lethargic by the 2nd half. The defense more so. Furman had a good plan and executed darn near flawlessly. We were a step slow and not sharp. These games don't matter anyway. We blew em out and handled business. Next week is the worry. 3 games in 12 days! How much energy is in the tank and hopefully no injuries! The ACC should be banned from scheduling games like these! It promotes injury and upsets and frankly is not fair to the teams. Clemson has always not faired well with these types of games! J/S

We looked like a poor tackling team. Furman backs specifically dragged defenders 2 or 3 yards on runs half of the time. Or secondary looked timid to tackle at times. They had a great game plan. Quick throws negated or dline. And our young corners had trouble. They killed us on like 6 or 7 slants and 3 screens.

Yep, maybe the most concerning was FU backs...

Dabo reached making Goodwin the DC. When he has not made adjustments to counter the success the other team is having with screens, he's showing he's over his head IMO. We should have hired an experienced DC.

I blame the screens on the secondary. On screen plays they have to come up and make tackles. They move out of the way to avoid being blocked by a lineman.

Goodwin has been training for years to replace Coach V when he would inevitably leave to be a HC. There was a plan in place. Dabo doesn't just wing it and make decisions like that on the fly. Give Wes a little while longer b4 writing him off. Coach V was the best coordinator we've ever had and even he had some stinker games where the yardage was higher than expected, heck ever ones where we flat out got whooped. Today was Goodwin's 3rd game as DC, let's get a lil bigger sample size b4 we start throwing words like "bust" and "a reach" out there. Even in our "magical" Natty seasons we would have a clunker game or 2. This is the time of the season you want those. By years end this team will be a well oiled machine. Just hide and watch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hiring him was definitely a reach based on his qualifications and experience.

Sep 10, 2022, 11:06 PM

That isn’t debatable.

Now, that isn’t to say that Wes isn’t a brilliant football mind, or that the won’t be the best DC we’ve ever had. But it was absolutely a risky hire based on the caliber of our program and the kind of top flight DCs we could’ve hired.

Qualifications and experience eh?

DC in training learning from venables.

Risky? Promoting from within? Someone you know and trust. Someone you know fits your culture. Someone you know will be well received by the players and other coaches.

You’d rather hire someone more “qualified” on paper, but also has a ton of unknowns? Sounds to me that’d be the risky hire…

No it wasn’t. You seem to forget the Al game and LSU games. BV’s D’s got lit up big time.

Oh state …Pitt game we lost at home … Bentley throwing for 5000 yards on us when they were terrible… I agree ppl act like our def never had bad games under Brent. It happens , I will say that I have been pretty disappointed in the tackling though and hopefully that’ll get better as the season goes

Overall we are just missing something on offense I don’t know if it’s an attitude or just maybe we missed on some WR … line doesn’t look any better we can’t run or furman or GT that’s not good

People absolutely forget that Coach V had some really bad games as well. Remember Pitt with the shuffle pass? Remember Bentley lighting up the Power Ranger led defense? It happens now and then to the best defenses. Are we one of those yet? I don't know, time will tell.

I prefer to think they were a bit sluggish because of a road game less than four days previously. That's my take anyway.

Re: OK, somebody explain to me...

I watched Dabo's press conference and he basically said they did very little work between Tuesday and Friday because of the short turnaround. They got back early Tuesday morning and pretty much did walk-throughs and film study on Wed.-Th. but they didn't learn much from the Furman-N Greenville game. He said the D looked a little "heavy-legged" and it was clear the intensity was lacking to be kind and non-existent to be direct. I think the emotional trauma of Ella getting airlifted back to DC didn't help with the focus. That would be a hard thing to get off your mind right before the game.

I'm going to just focus on the fact we are 2-0 and hope, with a normal week of practice we get back on track against La Tech before we start to get into the meat of our schedule.

Great teams win when they play poorly. Today we did.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It doesn’t seem like we are a great team this year.

Sep 10, 2022, 11:08 PM

Thankfully, it’s early and we have time to improve.

We are way more talented than just about every team on our schedule, so there is room for error. We have a lot to correct though.

Re: It doesn’t seem like we are a great team this year.

Sep 11, 2022, 9:04 AM

The schedule set up nicely for us. And we have some young guys in key positions that are going to be difference makers. Antonio for example.

If the team can get better around DJ, from what I have seen the 1st 2 games DJ can get the job done. The defense cannot play the way it did yesterday and expect to win. Mind you I was very impressed with Furman- that team seems like they are going to be in the mix for the FCS championship if yesterday is any indication.

WR play looked much better yesterday, but needs to improve. We need Adam to be the real deal here. If we can get him to be a game breaker that would go a long way.

The oline- this is the group that needs to improve the most. It is a shame to have the backs we have and this group to not be able to get any more push or giving them any space in which to operate to be successful. We need to be more physical and gel quickly.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, very disappointed.

Sep 10, 2022, 11:03 PM

I am guessing that we will see plenty of screen passes until we show we can stop them with any consistency.

Poor tackling, Dline got pushed back on 3rd and short, receivers running open.

Maybe they were overhyped and distracted because of Ella. Maybe they were tired and underprepared because of the short week. Whatever the reasons, if it doesn’t get fixed before Wake, we are in trouble.

The over/under for Furman scoring was 2. Seemed like any easy over pick if I was a betting man, but no way would I have expected 370 yards. With such a feared line, though, I expect we will a lot of offenses attacking us like Furman did.

I was surprised but they got quite a bit of that on those screen passes I think. That's something that happens to an aggressive defense and Furman did it with great success. The Furman QB also deserves some credit as does that bruiser of a running back. I suspect the Tiger D will be worked hard in practice this week...
