OK as football approaches the old tv is acting up

Aug 31, 2018, 12:35 PM

Its a 10 year old Sony 52". I've always liked Sony but I know there are lots of options. What would you guys suggest that you've had good experience with. We're seniors and not into gaming or anything very high tech. We just want a nice picture on a tv that is reliable and wont break the bank. Probably 52-60 inch

The new Sony XBR series TVs are some of the best on the market. Cant go wrong with them. OLED is the absolute best picture quality but expensive. Then LED tvs are a small step below in quality but still incredible.

LG and Samsung also are top tier. Check out Rtings.com if you want to really get in-depth with any brand or particular model.

I don’t use any of the “smart” features (that’s what the Roku is for), but it’s an excellent TV:

The truth good sir, is TV’s are #### near disposable and you won’t be able to tell the difference unless you’re an A/V enthusiast.

Go guy a 55” for sub-$500 or a 65” for sub-$750 and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

If you go spend $2-3k on a TV, you better be able to say why.

Hope this helped.

I have a 60" LG Smart TV with 4K resolution, but mainly because I take a lot of 4K videos and play them on my TV. Unless you have specific reasons for high quality TV's, I would go go fairly cheap and bypass 4K or some of the newer technologies. TV's are cheap now if you don't want bleeding edge tech.

I thought that football games would start broadcasting in 4K, but that did not happen as I expected. That was probably the main reason I got a 4K TV. Not sure if us old guys can see the difference anyway.

Go to Costco and get one of the Chinese tvs. You won't be able to see a difference (will be huge improvement from what you have now) and Costco will warranty

Buy another SONY 52 or 60 if you're feeling spry.

Aug 31, 2018, 1:50 PM

You got 10 years out of one and I'm guessing there's a streak going down the side of the screen. The bill for fixing that is reasonable, much less than a replacement of that quality. A decade is enough to get out of a TV since everything is disposable these days including wives and children.

I'm old school so I try to stick to what works. There's a fair honest man on Whitehorse Rd in Greenville that can fix that TV fairly cheap. He does good work.

If you're close to Gville shoot me a tmail. I have a son who needs an extra TV and will haul it off cheap if you're going with a new set.

I have a 65" Samsung purchased several years ago before prices went down. I paid about $2,000 to get the SmartHub with apps, which I quickly found was not worth the money. I'm now using a Roku3 for apps and it's a great combination. The Samsung TV is great, but as others have said there's not a lot of visible differences in picture quality these days. I do not have 4K and probably wouldn't see the difference if I did.

One thing on size - I read all of the articles on how to choose size based on viewing distance and from 9' was afraid to go bigger than 65", but it wasn't long before I thought I wanted 75". Don't talk yourself into one that is too small, thinking you'll be sorry if you get one that's too large. There's no such thing as too large in TV screens for football/sports use.

Samsung in the mid 50s will have a great picture. If the budget won’t allow it I have had 4 Insignia TVs that came from Best Buy and they have been awesome for the money. We tried to replace our Samsung with a 4K last month but it was not as good a picture so we took it back. 4K did some weird things with shadows and motion no matter how much we changed the settings. All that said we still have our first HDTV that was a 42 inch Sony (10 years old?) and it is still an excellent picture.

I have a Samsung smart tv that I have had for a couple years with no problems, just whatever you do don’t buy Vizio I have one that is now used for my computer screen because the ir sensor quit working so it can’t be controlled by a remote anymore and after googling it apparently it is a common problem with that company.
