Ohio State

Jun 21, 2022, 3:19 PM

They have two 5 star WRs committed to them now. Clemson hasn’t signed a 5 star WR since 2017 (Higgins). Which is crazy to believe.

They likely take the WRU name over the next few years. Wilson and Olave were 1st rounders. Jaxon Smith-Njigba will go 1st round this year. They still have Julian Fleming and Emeka Egbuka, two former 5 stars, on their roster.

Hopefully we can steal Noah Rogers from them now that they have two 5 stars committed.

- you are one of my fav posters.

$$ is talking. Colleges (at least for now ) can buy players. Hopefully this will ~~~ over time, if not CFB is on thin ice.

The deal at Clemson lately has been getting some guys with potential and coaching them up.

Tigers have hit on some, missed on some.

Last two seasons have been a joke. Players were there, just not healthy. OHS has more *****, but the cupboard at Clemson is not bare. I don't think that will be a weak point for us.

Exactly. There were only two 5-star WRs

Jun 21, 2022, 8:17 PM

in the country in the last signing class. As it was, we signed #10 Beaux Collins, #16 Troy Stellato, and #36 Dacari Collins. That's a TREMENDOUS wide receiver class. I'm not sure what the gnashing of teeth is all about - typical TNet, I guess.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Exactly. There were only two 5-star WRs

Jun 21, 2022, 9:00 PM

Beaux was actually 12 and Stellato 32 and their development is tbd. Stellato should have been instant impact but can't grasp the playbook. Anyway, not shabby but not wru title worthy.

No doubt in my mind had Jeff still been our recruiter/wr we'd have hauled in either Fleming or egbuka and kept us a flow going. Scott brought in Ladson and Ngata - no one could foresee the injuries. That said, we had tee, Amari, and Ross so we weren't bringing in the 98, 99 talent and have them sit for what appeared to be 2 years. Again, no one could predict the Ross situation.

So, it's not gnashing of teeth, nor Tnet as usual. The original post was merely an observation that we've lost our wru title. No denying at this moment that OSU is both developing and recruiting more WR talent than us. We lost with Scott leaving. And yes, I do agree Leon has a point on our simple route tree. It is.

Tnet has a lot of smart posters that know their stuff. Some may even be part of Clemson and maybe Dabo's staff.

So Beaux Collins didn't look like a future star?

Jun 21, 2022, 10:12 PM

, working as a true freshman.... in THAT offense ? He was one of the most "developed" guys on the field as the season progressed. He looked like a 5-star, when you consider the difficulties of the offense.

Dacari Collins developed. He definitely flashed his skillset... in *that* offense.

You can't say EJ didn't develop, because he was hurt.

Stellato needs to get healthy and get on the field.

Spector will improve for sure.

Ngata, banged up. He could have a great year, obviously.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jun 22, 2022, 11:16 AM

It was production in college and performance in the NFL that earned us the moniker. Again, we had one off year - last year with the struggling QB position. Ohio State has always signed more talent than us. We have not been sucking up consensus 5-stars.

Ngata has 1st round talent but injuries will prevent that from happening. EJ Williams will get drafted but not in the 1st round. Beaux and Dacari look like future NFL WRs but probably not 1st rounders. We have to wait and see with Randall and Antonio. It’s obviously too early to judge them.

Thanks. I brought up something similar in another thread but I had no idea it'd been 2017. Ouch. Wonder what happened in and around 17. Hmmm ?? , well we signed only one receiver in 18 - Ross. Then in the huge 19 class we brought in two studs in Ladson and Ngata, along with Spec. Then Scott left that season.

Re: Ohio State

Jun 21, 2022, 4:12 PM

Our WRs have been knocked for not having a developed route running tree when going to through the draft process. They had that knock when Jeff Scott was the WR coach too. Since we don’t run an NFL system, our WRs aren’t asked to run NFL route combinations. This is to say that our WRs are bad route runners, they just have more to learn than other WRs. Nuk is arguably a top 3 route runner in the league today.

I forgot to mention Renfrow. He’s probably in the top 10 for route running. He’s only used in the slot though. Nuk is used in the field, boundary, and slot. So I’d put his route running ability ahead of Renfrow.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ohio State

Jun 21, 2022, 5:40 PM [ in reply to Re: Ohio State ]

Lmao no one says that about Clemson's receivers. In fact many teams have said former Clemson receivers were well coached and game ready. Almost no college teams run NFL offenses or have NFL level route trees installed in their offense. Clemson has as complex route concepts as just about any other college team and more complex than many.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ohio State

Jun 21, 2022, 7:22 PM

There are plenty of articles on Google that you can find with concerns about our WRs. And you’re wrong about teams not running pro-style systems. A lot of teams have one form of a pro-style offense. Especially the great teams. Alabama under Bill O’Brien. Georgia under Todd Monken, former OC for the Browns. Ohio State under Ryan Day, former QB coach for the 49ers and Eagles. Notre Adams under Tommy Rees, former coach for the Chargers. Michigan under Jim Harbaugh. Texas A&M under Jimbo Fisher. LSU had Joe Brady.

I’ll just stop there since all of those teams have HCs/OCs that run pro-style offenses. The vast majority of those coaches have NFL coaching experience as well.

Now, correct your statement, sir.

Re: True, but all apply spread concepts w/ regularity****

Jun 22, 2022, 9:06 AM

Same as NFL teams now. Most of them spread the ball out in pass heavy offenses. Rule changes sort of dictated that. It’s more friendly for QBs and WRs, which is why passing numbers are off the charts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ohio State

Jun 22, 2022, 5:33 PM [ in reply to Re: Ohio State ]

All of those teams use a mix of spread and pro concepts, as does Clemson. How about provider links to all of these articles of NFL personnel criticizing Clemson receivers. I haven't seen any. In fact I've seen the opposite. Pretty sure you're just making that up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The only "experts" who said that were on TNet.

Jun 21, 2022, 8:37 PM [ in reply to Re: Ohio State ]

In 2021 we barely had a functional QB and a plethora of WR injuries. In 2020 (same coach) we had the most productive passing game in Clemson history.

There's nothing wrong with our WRs. We need a QB who can get them the ball.

Re: Ohio State

Jun 21, 2022, 5:24 PM

One more reason why this year is huge. We are falling out of favor with the big name guys. Not only are we not getting them, if you go down the list on 247 we aren't even being considered by the top 50 give or so take a few like say Joseph and that looks shaky. Happy with the guys we have but if it continues this way ( we are seeing the same thing in regards to landing a top tier RB ) Clemson fans , myself included are going to need to temper expectations. Dabo and Co likely can't continue to compete for national championships , nor should he be expected to. There is some level of comfort in that we are still landing the top most critical piece of the offense ( QB ) but will that continue if we are no longer in the hunt ?

NC State, Pitt (or used to anyway) Boston College, UNC, VT, and they are certainly not signing 5 stars .... other once in a blue moon. If we can get the ball to our guys they will be very effective. I am not worried!
