-They didn't run "retractions". If a person doesn't know the difference between a retraction and a correction, he cannot be taken seriously in this discussion. Thus, his complaints should already be considered null and void.

-The news agencies printed public corrections. When you have to run a correction on an online story, you don't ax the story--that's actually a cover up. Nobody "quietly" runs a correction when they put it publicly on a website.

-Now, should better due diligence have been done to get the information correct? Sure. But there's no conspiracy or cover up. They got information wrong and publicly admitted to it. Kind of like how Newsmax had to admit this weekend that they lied about the election fraud stuff that duped millions of idiots (including a few here) into thinking the election was stolen.

Typical lefty playbook. Run a BS story you know is false, then days later, issue a 'correction' buried somewhere back by the legal notices.

contending that the correction ever gets the same play as the original story are you?

Once that story runs, the clickbait news aggregators where most people get their stories aren't hitting reset on the algorithms to put that old story back into prominence on the feed.

Good on em for the correction, but I get the sentiment that regardless of which ideology a bad story helps/harms, the damage is largely done by the original story, and hardly rectified by the correction.

Are we talking newspapers?

May 4, 2021, 1:02 PM

Then yes, I do contend that. The correction is/was run on the actual original online article. That's SOP when running a correction to an online version.

In the print edition, yes, the SOP is run the correction on the same page as the error occurred or on the editorial page where corrections are standard. Some magazines will run these in their inside TOC area or letters to the editor area.

What would you have? Run an entirely new article? It can get corrected in one sentence.

For TV or cable news? No, I do not contend it gets the same play.

Naw, dawg, here's what I'm saying.

May 4, 2021, 1:09 PM

I think for the most part, Joe Public these days, and I could be wrong, gets their news like this:

Opens up Internet to Google or Yahoo home page, is about to type in a search, and sees "FBI RAIDS GIULIANI'S OFFICE" in the 5-7 stories highlighted below. They click on it, takes em to whatever site has the story.

Couple days later, when story is corrected they open Yahoo, and not only is the story not there (It's been replaced by Bill Gates' Divorce and a dog who saved a cat from a fire), Joe Public probably couldn't even tell you which source ran the FBI raid story that he read a couple days prior.

People who take news seriously...you...me....a lot of other board members....yeah, we have our primary news sources and follow them religiously, and we'll catch the corrections. We aren't most people.

May 4, 2021, 1:20 PM

I think the real world consequences of inaccurate reporting, even if unintentional, are. I'm not techy enough to know of a solution to get the corrections more exposure. At the journalism level, it seems like abandoning this rush to be first and lax-er validation standards due to that rush should be abandoned in favor of more airtight stories.

Yes it is and you know it is. I have no problem with it in general. You just call people out for it all the #### time to deflect your blatant

There are too many examples to count/remember. I do remember you calling me or somebody else out for it when talking about the capital riot and insurrection. Me or somebody else commented on how burning down a police station, or creating chaz was also an insurrection and you deflected by saying whataboutism.

Apparently by your standard now, that isn’t whataboutism? It’s just “pointing out another example of an insurrection”

You are a gigantic hypocrite.

Re: Help a brother out

May 5, 2021, 9:56 AM

Ah, I see how you're struggling. You see, I was giving another example of the status quo for dealing with errors, something the OP seemed to think was some leftist conspiracy. The NewsMax example shows it's just how it works.

The example you're going back to is how you and so many others here dismissed the Capitol riots by saying, "But what about this summer!? Where was your outrage then?!" when, in fact, everyone here denounced the violence over the summer, AND the fact that the Capitol was worse.

I provided an additional example. You all tried to deflect from the Capitol because, deep down, y'all are kinda glad it happened but are upset it failed.

Re: Help a brother out

May 5, 2021, 10:10 AM

LMAO

Now you are just making up conspiracy theories to again deflect from your blatant hypocrisy.

I’m glad the Capitol Hill insurrection happened?? You have to be kidding me. My goodness you are so dumb.

And let me know why the capital hill insurrection was worse. 1 person died violently and it was a rioter (contrary to another conspiracy theory you promoted) Also, the damage that was done was a fraction of the billion dollars in damages from BLM riots. Both were bad. BLM riots were categorically worse.

And here is the definition of whataboutism by Oxford languages.

“the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counteraccusation or raising a different issue.”

So in this instance the thread was about fake news pertaining to Rudy Guiliani. You responded to this instance by raising a different issue of the fake news by Newsmax.

I can’t believe I have to spell this out for you, but it’s not surprising.

Re: Help a brother out

May 5, 2021, 10:13 AM

I know it's hard and I'm asking a lot here with the reading comprehension, but again, I listed NewsMax as a similar example to a similar situation (except NewsMax probably knew it was making the stuff up).

Following the Capitol riot, the ONLY--and I mean the absolute only--proper response from any American was denounce that incident. Any person who harked back to the summer stuff was trying to deflect attention from the Capitol and secretly kind of likes that the Capitol happened--and hoped it succeeded.

Period. That's it. Otherwise, they wouldn't change the subject.

Re: Help a brother out

May 5, 2021, 10:28 AM

Wow dude. You engaged in whataboutism, full stop. You responded to fake news by bringing up other fake news. Read the definition again. What you are arguing right now is that your whataboutism isn’t as bad as others capitol riot whataboutism. because apparently I secretly wanted the Capitol Hill insurrection to succeed. And when you say succeed I think you mean that I wanted the insurrectionists to murder mike pence, Nancy Pelosi, and many other members of congress that are democrats. This in itself is wildly hilarious. You are so delusional.

Moreover that is just one example that I remember and can point to. Any time somebody does exactly what you did you call them out. And you’re a hypocrite.

Most people on here completely denounced the Capitol Hill riots immediately. It was bad. It was embarrassing. It was an insurrection exactly as there were multiple insurrections in BLM riots, but nobody called them insurrections.

Just admit you engaged in whataboutism. It’s plain as day for all the world to see on this thread.

May 5, 2021, 10:39 AM

If a person's response to the Capitol is, "But what about this summer?! Where were you then?!" instead of a unifying voice to denounce the Capitol incident, there's some underlying support of the Capitol. It's an attempt at deflection and derailing the conversation. It's attempting to attack the character of the other person. It's argumentative fallacies out the wazoo.

It's absolutely the case here. No one on this board to my recollection supported the vandalism or violence over the summer. Everyone denounced it. Thus, anyone here who does the "whatabout" over it is being, at best, intentionally dishonest to derail a valid conversation.

The real issue is that the Capitol riot shouldn't be a political or "team" issue; all good Americans, whether left, right, or centrist, should denounce it and end it at that. Too many Trumpies here fell all over themselves to downplay it, attack those who criticized it, or, in a few rare cases, openly cheerlead it.

There were other discussions after that about the capitol riots as well. That’s how a message bird works.

Some of those discussions included me wondering why nobody ever called BLM insurrections, insurrections. Other discussions included your conspiracy theories about the violent deaths that occurred as well as you saying that it was a coup attempt and the majority of the people in the capitol were trying to kill members of Congress and overthrow the government.

This (a link off of the OP's original link) NBC News report states that the FBI prepared the report but then didn't provide it to RG because it would complicate a criminal investigation that was currently open on RG.

Questions:
1) What was the criminal investigation involving RG? I can't keep it all straight anymore.
2) So the FBI declined to inform the POTUS lawyer that he was meeting with a Russian agent, who would provide him false information with the intention of swaying our election!?! Was THAT a good call?

Answering my own question, I think the "criminal

So, if that's true, how does the FBI decide not to inform him of a potential issue with a Ukranian working for the Russians? That seems like poor judgement, does it not? Penny wise, pound foolish?

That seems like a bigger story here than simply reaffirming the clear conclusion that journalism today lacks both integrity and professionalism.
