Offseason Friday OT: What's the best CFB game you ever saw

Jun 28, 2019, 11:11 AM

that didn't involve Clemson?

I gotta go with the Oklahoma-Boise St Fiesta Bowl in 2007. That game had everything--a hated CFB Blueblood, a plucky, upstart newcomer, a 2-point conversion to tie in the last 2 mins, a pick-6 that looked like it sealed the win, a hook-and-lateral to tie in the last second, a crazy OT, a trick play for 2 points and the win...

What else you got?

That’s a great one. I would say Auburn Kick6 over Alabama. Also Doug Flutie miracle in Miami hail
Mary. Miami over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl I think in 1983 was good too with Nebraska going for two points for the win when a tie would have given them the National Championship. Maybe a UVA upset of the Criminoles sometime in the 1990s I think?

Your answer is the correct answer.

Jun 28, 2019, 12:10 PM

The correct answer to this question is, and will always be, the Fiesta Bowl between OU & Boise State.

I don't recall ever rooting, actually rooting, for a non-Clemson team like we all did for Purdue vs The O31-0 State buckeyes last year.

The Choke at Doak was amazing. Bonus was seeing Spurrier lose his mind. I hated him even then.

2006. Georgia Tech vs. Notre Dame
in Atlanta. ND had Brady Quinn at Quarterback and was #2 in the Country. I think GT was Top 15.

Calvin Johnson took that game over
along with Reggie Ball. Bobby Dodd Stadium was rocking in Atlanta that night!

I was there there, and notre dame barely won! Came down to the wire.
Stayed with a longtime childhood friend in their fraternity house on campus. That was a great game and time!

2005(?) Rose Bowl where Vince Young beat USC. Most entertaining game I can ever remember watching that I had no rooting interest in

I believe the Ole Miss vs Alabama game you mentioned was played in 1969. Archie Manning passed for 400+ yards and rushed for 100+ yards, but lost 33-32. I do agree, it was the best game I ever saw.

pretty hard to beat. Nebraska kicking the crap out of Spurrier and Florida in the '96 Fiesta Bowl was awesome. The Texas/USC NC game was amazing.

Haven't been to many non-Clemson games so I'm limited in options as the "best game" I ever saw. The only one that stands out is a GT vs Auburn game in the mid 80's at GT. GT was up 10-7 with about a minute remaining, I guess, and ended up losing 20-10... Auburn scored a TD on offense with a miraculous catch in the back of the endzone with less than a minute left and got another TD on a pick 6 on the last play of the game.

The Georgia / Oklahoma game 2 years ago in CFP

Jun 28, 2019, 1:55 PM

That was a great game to watch. Either team could have won that game.

I also have to say the Rose Bowl with USC and Penn St in 2017 was a fun game to watch. Another back and forth game that neither team wanted to loss.

The infamous “No Cigar Today” game in ‘77 (Steve Fuller to Jerry Butler).

I was there. I was 12 years old and dressed in garnet.....as I was every Saturday. They tried their best to make a Gamecock out of me but after that Saturday it just wouldn’t take.

When I tell Carolina fans I was raised in a Gamecock household and attended USC sporting events of every kind as a kid they always ask, “What happened.”

I tell them, “Free will”..............”and 1977”.

UM's curb stomping of UND at Hard Rock stadium a couple years ago.

When UM got their first interception like in UNDs 1st or 2nd series...it got so loud that I thought that my ears were going to bleed ( and this is coming from a guy who should be wearing hearing aids to begin with). The whole game was a flat out curb stomping. It was glorious.

Miami vs Boston College, the Doug Flutie "Hail Mary" game.

Jun 29, 2019, 12:57 PM

Bernie Kosar was QB for the 'Canes, and the game was back and forth all day. Kosar thought he had won it for the Canes in the last couple of minutes, until "Phelan is down there, TOUCHDOWN!" That play will live on as long as college football highlights are ever shown.

Re: Miami vs Boston College, the Doug Flutie "Hail Mary" game.

Jun 29, 2019, 1:43 PM

Also the week before that, Miami had a 31-0 halftime lead over
Maryland and lost the game 42-40. The Maryland QB Frank Reich
had a similar game with Buffalo in an NFL wild card game with
the Oilers in the early 90s. Of course, he's the Colts HC now.

Also weird was the Orange Bowl game with Nebraska in January of
that year that started their dynasty on a fluke. So Miami had
3 crazy games in one calendar year. Osborne going for 2 was one
of the worst calls in college football history.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can kinda see Osborne's reasoning. Hard to toot your horn

Jun 29, 2019, 6:02 PM

as undisputed National Champion if you just got tied in the de facto Championship game. And, the way the polls worked back then, no guarantee they would have been voted #1, even though they were ranked there going in.
