OFFICIALS GOT IT RIGHT by RULE

Dec 6, 2015, 8:27 AM

n the NCAA rulebook Rule 6, article 2, section c, part 5 states: "All players of Team A must have been between the nine-yard marks after the ready-for-play signal [S19]". The penalty for this is "Live-ball foul. Five yards from the previous spot, or five yards from the spot where the subsequent dead ball belongs to Team B, or from the spot where the ball is placed after a touchback [S18 or S19] (A.R. 6-1-2-VI)." Or in other words the same exact outcome as an offside penalty.

Here is an image prior to the "ready-for-play" whistle:

Here is an image at the kick:

Two players on the far end and one on the near are outside the 9 yard mark both before the ready for play and at the kick. A video from ready to kick all the way to kick would verify, but the official was heard saying he could have called it on multiple people. Perhaps this is what he meant.

Maybe so but that isnt the reason for the flag, their player broke the plane before the ball was kicked

"The ACC said the offside play was not reviewable. Through a league spokesperson, ACC coordinator of officials Dennis Hennigan said the referees were lined up properly on the play and that one official saw a North Carolina player break the plane before the ball was kicked."

It appeared to me that one UNC players head and...........

shoulders crossed the line before the kick. No part of your body can be in the neutral. Maybe his feet weren't off-sides, but his head was.

I've got the game on video... believe you're right!!

Not only that, they could have flagged UNC on this rule on most of their kickoffs including the second onside kick.

ANOTHER RULE THE NCAA REQUIRES

Dec 6, 2015, 10:03 AM

DURING AN ONSIDE KICK OR KICK OFF THE KICKING TEAM MUST HAVE AT LEAST 4 PLAYERS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE KICKER. DURING THAT KICK THERE WAS ONLY 3 PLAYERS TO THE RIGHT OF THE KICKER AND 7 LINED UP ON THE RIGHT.

UNC did have 4 players on the right side of the kicker.....

If the rule requires at least 4 players on one side of the ball at the time of the kick, the second photo above shows just three to the kickers right.

That is what I think was called, if the far kicker(to the right) had kicked the ball: I think they would have gotten away with it. Although Fields was Targeted by their player!JMO

Illegal Formation vs. Offsides

Dec 6, 2015, 11:50 AM

I absolutely agree that UNC was in an illegal formation, but if that is what the refs were calling then they gave the wrong signal (S18 in the NCAA rule book - offsides) rather than the appropriate illegal formation signal (S19). Not sure if that matters in the long run though (same result, same yardage etc).

(Warning - this next point makes me sound like a conspiracy theorist, but the physics and science are correct - so, TAKE THE RED PILL, NEO!) Because of the parallax effect (optical illusion due to the camera angle), you cannot rule out the possibility that UNC #30 was leaning across the restraining line (defined in the NCAA rule book as part of a vertical plane). To get an idea of how much the parallax effect can alter perception, take a look at either of the refs who are lined up on the 35. From the ESPN camera angle from midfield, it looks like those refs are not straddling the 35 but appear to be way off-center. Closer camera angles show the refs straddling the 35 with their feet/legs the same distance from the hardline.

Re: OFFICIALS GOT IT RIGHT by RULE

Dec 6, 2015, 12:52 PM

Nobody is offsides and there are definitely 4 people to the right of the kicker at the kick unless UNC only had 10 guys on the field. There are two guys up at the top, but they're basically in line with each other so it looks like one guy. #30 is onside by like a foot. I've literally never heard of this 9 yard mark rule, but if that's the case then yes, it appears there is somebody lined up outside that hash. I feel like if that's what they were calling though, then that would have been the statement immediately after the game. So the ref called offsides because he thought #30 got to the 45 before the ball was kicked not because somebody was outside the hash mark. He was wrong. Was UNC in an illegal formation anyway? Possibly. Would UNC have won or even managed to tie had the recovery stood up? Probably not.
