Offhand observation: During our best recruiting runs, we

Apr 13, 2022, 9:02 AM

were going after, and signing, the #1 or #2 player at their position, be that offense or, moreso, defense. Nowadays, when I read about who we are recruiting highly, seems like those numbers are in the "teens" at their position more often than not on defense.

Is that just a function of who Dabo thinks is the best fit for us from a character plus talent mix, or is it more driven by schools with huge NIL bases taking the "plums" out of play for us?

I would think the NIL is the problem. Look at DJ's brother, the father has done said this will be a business deal, meaning whoever has the most money gets him. I would say at this point most of your 5 stars are looking for big money and most will get it. We are not at the bottom for nil but lets face it we can't compete with A@M, Texas, So. Cal, and some of the other schools out there. Imagine taking an 18 year old downtown LA and showing him endorsement opps compared to downtown Clemson. If you are a Clemson fan and you favor the nil then you should enjoy the ride of hoping to be competitive in a couple of years.

I think NIL plays a role but look at the 2016 team and see how they were rated. Besides Deshaun being one of the top recruits at his position there were a lot of 4 stars and 3 stars playing key roles.

We don't need to give up yet.

Not giving up by any stretch of the imagination. Actually, I

believe that in the long run, Dabo's position on just about all these recent changes will be vindicated. Butt, there are some dark times ahead for college football before some form of regulation on NIL calms things down and re-levels the playing field.

At present, especially while NIL and portal direction and outcomes are unknown, your observation has a lot of merit. Clemson may become more of a niche player in recruiting for a few years. A university and football home where academics, brotherhood, graduation character, reasonable NIL opportunities, and football all matter to the recruit in different measures.

We do know Clemson, under Dabo's leadership, will not be primarily focused on NIL and football in that order.

My take is that Clemson will be a niche recruiter in our own distinct way ... very much like Notre Dame. Dabo and coaches will seek well-rounded young men based on team needs and circumstances. They will be able to win and win big, but NIL will not be their top consideration.

talented young men out there each year who are not driven merely by the prospect of making a quick buck now, as opposed to getting into the right environment to grow their potential future value down the road. Because, unfortunately, as of right now, with basically "Wild, Wild West" rules in place for NIL, the dollar signs are swaying a lot of kids.

NIL has not been around long enough to have any track record that shows what it will or won't do. The Portal is the biggest issue because in today's football world it is likely that the top players will be spread out all over the country because they will not sit on the bench. Just a few years ago, there were maybe 5 or 6 major draws that kids flocked to and now there are probably 20 or more. Coaches change and programs change with them. This is a crucial year for our program if we are going to stay in the category of top 20 recruiting draws, we have to prove that our new coordinators can get the job done. Time will tell and the NC State, Florida State, Notre Dame and South Carolina games will be huge, not just for this year but for the future.

+1. Agree Valley Boy. 2022 is a critical year. And QB play will never be more important as a separator between the "haves" and have-nots".

With NIL and the portal, Dabo will not be able to keep up with (nor will he try to in most cases) the highest bidders incl. Bama, UGA, Tx A&M and some others. But Dabo will be able to recruit with most. QB play and leadership IMHO is the best means for Clemson to beat teams with better roster talent.

playing field. The Talking Richard Heads tried to write us off last year. The only reason we aren't completely dead and buried already in their eyes is that we went 6-0 to finish the season, and have a very highly rated freshman recruit now on campus at QB.

Imo, I think it just feels like that, especially after the big splash last year with Texas AM. As well as missing a couple to uga and UNC... Both that had nothing to do with NIL.

You're only talking 44 kids each year that can label as #1 or #2 in their respective positions. That's really not very many. Then, take in interest and Dabo's vetting on character, that knocks down that 44 number quite a bit.

Where we've gone down over the last 4 years or recruiting cycle is wide receivers. And it's just now starting to show.

luck run with injuries, and DJ's stuggles at QB have made the WR issues stick out like a sore thumb. And, the injury bug is still with us, with Randall already going down with an ACL before he could even get going in spring ball.

Let's hope he is a quick healer, along the lines of Amari Rodgers. I still shake my head in wonder at how quickly he was able to rehab and come back from his ACL.

Don’t kid yourself, Last year the qb position let us down too. Hopefully, the ship will be righted this year and Dabo uses the backup early if needed.
