The bill doesn’t only ban sex reassignment surgery, it also bans hormone replacement therapy and puberty blockers, the latter of which is definitely not “irreversible” and is only prescribed after working with a pediatric psychiatrist and being diagnosed with gender dysphoria.

These treatments have been shown to significantly reduce suicide rates in trans youth. So no, you’re not in favor of protecting kids if you support this type of legislation.

It’s also laughable that they seem to think state legislators understand these types of medical treatments better than the doctors who are prescribing them. Their willful ignorance in the face of the actual medical facts shows that they don’t actually care about kids or trans people, they just want to continue to waging bullshít culture wars.

Oh so if it’s a small enough portion of the population it’s okay to deny them medical treatments that have proven to be effective. Got it.
I’m not sure what you think is happening with these medications, but it’s not like any kid who says they’re trans can just go get a prescription for puberty blockers. They have to be prescribed by a child psychiatrist, and there are several requirements which must be verified by working with said psychiatrist for months, which I’ve listed below:
-Show a long-lasting and intense pattern of gender nonconformity or gender dysphoria
-Have gender dysphoria that began or worsened at the start of puberty
-Address any psychological, medical or social problems that could interfere with treatment
-Provide informed consent
Additionally, children who take puberty blockers can stop them at any time and go through a normal puberty. The only adverse side effect is a slight reduction in bone density in some people who have taken these medications.
I’ll leave you with a hypothetical. If your kid was diagnosed with depression by a medical professional, would you allow them to take anti-depressants or would you tell them that they weren’t old enough to make that kind of life decision?

Nope, I’ve been Chris all my life, I just like to be well informed before making decisions about whether or not the government should be denying healthcare to certain groups of people.
What about other mental disorders like schizophrenia? Should children be allowed to take anti-psychotics if a psychiatrist diagnoses them with early-onset schizophrenia?
My point is, shouldn’t we allow the medical professionals to decide what is and isn’t proper treatment for various mental disorders instead of having the government make that decision?

I tend to side with the professionals on what is and isn’t a mental disorder, so as long as gender dysphoria is listed in the DSM-5 (or any subsequent editions), I think it should be diagnosed and treated as such.
I think a lot of the issues that trans people face come from a general lack of understanding as well as empathy. While most people know at least a couple gay people, not as many know any trans people. I think this leads to people treating them in ways that they wouldn’t if they personally knew any trans people.

folks what they can/can't do with when raising their kids. But - you know - there are folks out there who wouldn't educate their children if the govt didn't make them.
I also think there are parents who would intentionally or unintentionally eff their kids up mentally about their sexuality. I'm probably in favor of making the kids wait until they are old enough to make the decision themselves - recognizing that 18 is kind of an arbitrary number.

I don’t think the idea that parents are pressuring their kids into identifying as transgender (a gender identity issue not sexuality btw) is very well substantiated, but I guess it could happen. Either way, it’s fairly irrelevant as the decision to pursue these types of treatments is only possible if a psychiatrist diagnoses a child with persistent gender dysphoria and recommends these treatments.
Laws like this fly in the face of the opinions of medical institutions and professionals and will end up harming more kids than they help. Especially with banning things like puberty blockers which are reversible and have been shown to have negligible side effects.
