My thoughts on the UVA tragedy

Nov 14, 2022, 1:40 PM

Waking up to see the news about what transpired overnight at the University of Virginia and what has filtered out so far is truly heartbreaking. I know many will use it for political arguing and jockeying...I'm going to choose not to.

Based on what I'm seeing so far with the victims and perpetrator, this screams that this was a premeditated attack. The vast majority of us don't know full details, although things will probably come to light in the coming days/months/etc. None of which will justify any of this. This individual was filled with anger or hatred or some other irrational emotion, and he chose to respond to that with violence and a disregard for human life. Because of that, there are 3 young lives taken from this Earth way too soon, at least 2 more fighting for their lives, and a whole multitude of people whose lives - directly and indirectly - have been altered as a result of one man's actions.

Alot will be made of the football team aspect. We all like to get on here or elsewhere where we can take in football/sport content, puff our chests out when our team's doing good, grumble when they're doing bad, etc. At the same time, coaches and players of the game are still humans who deal with real life situations. For the players and staff at Virginia, real life has hit them in the worst way possible. Tony Elliot and his staff are having to navigate something that no coaching seminar, handbook, or anything else in this world can adequately prepare them for. And a group of young men are having to handle not just teammates, but guys who have probably developed a relationship akin to brothers. Hopefully Tony and his staff will receive the love and support from not just the UVA campus and surrounding community, but from all around the country, to help everyone in the program grieve and try to wrap their heads around this senseless tragedy.

Something is fundamentally broken in our society. We're all something to somebody - parent, aunt/uncle, teacher, coach, counselor, minister, etc. I hope that we all can use this tragedy as a teaching moment to the children and young adults in our lives. To have respect for the lives of others, to try to notice if something is wrong and try to steer someone to the help they need, and to drive home the fact that actions have consequences, and those consequences can be life-altering to yourself and others.

Praying for peace and comfort for those in Charlottesville and beyond impacted by this horrible event.

Of course its broken, and we are going full speed ahead

Nov 14, 2022, 2:03 PM

On very few IF ANY issues we face today do we examine root causes, unintended impacts of our "solutions", or anything that remotely constitutes well thought out argumentation or worldviews.

Its really sad times. And the problem is the erosion is too slow to be on the mind, instead its just "whats for lunch today and how do I get it paid for".

Sad.

probably because anyone who makes an effort to "examine root causes" gets mocked and called "woke"

I’ve yet to see “woke” AND “examining root causes” in action… in tandem

Well, for one, Critical Race Theory is about examining the root causes of racism and how certain system in America have been designed (intentionally or not) to disproportionality effect people of color.

Have you seen the nightmare that as caused?

It has people running out like chickens with their head cut off claiming it makes white people hate themselves and is just about making white people feel guilty, etc.

The "woke" are controlling the media/message and the congress right now. Why don't they pass a law against the root causes? What's holding them back?

they are out of a job if they attempt to address the root causes

great job! you brought politics into a thoughtful and respectful post!

I TDd you for being the first jerk to try to drive the bus into the swamp.

Leadership where it counts or can be seen is lacking!

Nov 14, 2022, 3:11 PM

When you hear leaders from both political parties just this year say out-loud they'd like to punch out an opposing party member or take em behind the woodshed..

then we've got real leadership problems from top to bottom!

I didn't mention anything with a single ounce of political affiliation.

You just melted like a snowflake.

You mean

Nov 14, 2022, 3:15 PM [ in reply to Re: Of course its broken, and we are going full speed ahead ]

like going on a taxpayer funded vacation to Guatemala instead of ever visiting the US/Mexico border?

… to study the “root causes” of the border crisis that “doesn’t exist”…

No one called that woke. It’s just stupid, and a ridiculous lie.

I couldn’t agree more.***

Re: My thoughts on the UVA tragedy

Nov 14, 2022, 3:12 PM

in a discussion thread not associated with Clemson many agreed that we have lost respect for one another and for self. We have degraded into a mass of people primarily interested in how much can I get and how little might I work, or spend, to get it...no matter who it hurts.

It would be very easy to inject political arguments here but some lives have been ended and others forever changed . We didn't see this kind of stuff very much 50 years ago, 75 years ago.. . We had bad people, always did, but this senseless random murder shouts a lack of respect for self and others. We are doing something wrong and we, individually, need to figure out the root cause within each of us and, collectively, start living different lives.

One word. JESUS. The root cause is somehow as a nation we’ve decided that we don’t need him.

I saw and shared a FB post the other day

Nov 14, 2022, 5:29 PM

that said it all for me: “Rather than putting Christ back in Christmas, I’d settle for putting Christ back in Christians.”
