Observations From NC/VT Game

Watched the replay today. Yes, Sam Howell has an outstanding, future NFL arm. And the UNC ground game was surprisingly strong. But what struck me mostly was how beleaguered BOTH defenses were. Arm tackling was the calling of the day. Huge running holes on both defenses. Neither team threw their bodies around with any intensity. It was as if it was mentally acceptable for the other offense to score (the growing mindset around the country that perpetuated in the Big12). I’ll give VT at least a partial pass as they were so depleted by COVID.
If BV unfolds his usual great game plan, and our D plays with any of the emotion they did Sat night, I don’t see either of these opponents being a threat down the line.

VT had some guys out. Not sure how many were on the D. I was shocked how bad they were.

Still very depleted in the defensive backfield including the starting safety who also calls the defenses on the field. The guy that ended up replacing him is a walk on and for a reason. Big heart, just not the talent to match. VT ended up playing an outside linebacker at safety some.
None of that is an excuse for what we saw Saturday. Our d-line got demolished all night. After 30 years of Bud Foster defenses, Saturday was tough to watch.
Carolina is good, very good offensively, but VT made them look a sight better than they are, IMO. VT was terrible defensively, plain and simple.
But VT did expose their #1 rushing defense. That was a mirage based on who they had played.

You watch those guys for years and are constantly amazed at the job they do with what they have to work with, and yet, it still shocks you when they are gone and you see what is left.
Cherish that dude. I know Dabo is the man, just as Beamer was for us for so many years, but keep BV happy.

I’ll say it again: show me a team that’s playing good defense this season other than Clemson and UGA. Lots of reasons but the fact is the spring practice was lost and the tackling in fall practice has been extremely limited due to COVID.
Team defense, particularly tackling, will improve as the season progresses.
Plus UNC was down 3 starters on defense and it doesn’t (yet) have the depth of a Clemson to simply plug new guys in and not miss a beat.

What exactly was “waaa waaa” in what he said? Seemed like an honest assessment to me. He was also spoke very admirably of Clemson.

VT was reportedly down 15 players this go around. Not sure other than the safety how many starters were affected.
I didn't watch the game: but are you saying you guys were way behind - but you ran it to get back in the game?
If so, that is a wow moment! Usually you are passing every down trying to score quick.
Not sure how many N. Carolina defensive players were out. But, that offense they have will make up for most defensive decencies.
You know Mack Brown will have the defense fixed soon enough. You know he learned from his experience at Texas not to let stuff fester too long! If it's just reps due to no practice; that's one thing. But, if it's scheme and accountability he might be looking at LB coach or secondary coaches to take over. Send a message it won't be tolerated. He admitted he let things get away from him at Texas and didn't address some coaching areas he should have sooner. With a highly ranked team and his age - I don't think he will let it slide for long w/o taking action based on what he said shortly "before" taking the N. Carolina job.
Why do I care as a Clemson fan? Because I want N. Carolina undefeated and in the ACCCG and highly ranked. It would make for an awesome showing on the biggest stage the conference has to offer!

Heels had 3 key starters out on D. But to address your comments , I don’t think the problem is with schemes or coaching. Heels are just not super talented or deep on D yet. So, no excuses. We just are not good on D yet. Help is on the way but it will be a year or two before we might be a legit top 10 team. Every Heels fan I’ve talked to thinks the top 5 ranking is fools gold. Time will tell I guess.

UNC had their top DL out for concussion, top corner out who appears to be week to week, and their starting nickel out.
Appears they’ll get the DL and nickel back this week but that could explain some of the D issues.
