Observation: Clemson Speed

Oct 26, 2022, 11:39 AM

In past years, it was obvious, even that announcers would frequently comment during the game, on the gap between Clemson speed vs opponents. This year (and last), we just haven't had the speed on offense (defense on the other hand look very speedy - especially our LB's). Our outside WR's struggle to get separation - thankfully we have Williams this year - great at getting separation. RB Etienne a tough act to follow, but the strength that Shipley has put on has limited his "take it to the house" ability (but love to see his strength and determination in picking up short yardage). QB - again tough act to follow but the speed that Lawrence had was world class (picturing the run against OSU where he outran entire defense, including some elite speed DB's). This isn't meant to be critical, just an observation - not as many explosive "take it to the house" type plays that we are used to seeing. Perhaps it could be looked at as a positive of keeping the opposing defense on the field longer (and resting ours).

I get what you’re saying, but Ship did just have a 50 yard TD run.

Shipley is not a fast running back. He is a good running back though.

In no particular order, of some of the RBs Dabo has coached at Clemson, Shipley is slower than:

CJ Spiller
Travis Etienne
Mike Bellamy
Andre Ellington
Tavien Feaster
Rod McDowell
CJ Davidson

He is faster than:
Jamie Harper
Adam Choice
Tyshon Dye
CJ Fuller
Darien Rencher

I think he runs similarly to Wayne Gallman. Seems fast for 10 yards but fails to beat angles down the field to create "home runs". I'm not sure why so many people talk about Shipley as though he has world class speed.

There’s a reason why football speed is measure by 40 yd dash

What happens in those first 40 yards is most of what produces a winning effort by a RB.

It’s nice to have that 5th gear that some great RBs have, but it’s not the paramount consideration for recruiting a RB.

CJ Spiller and Travis Etienne are the only Clemson RBs I would say truly had it all.

Shipley has a superb initial burst, very good speed through the hole, and reasonable speed thereafter.

He does a lot of other things that make him a winner other than hit the occasional long TD run.

When things do not go as the casual fan expects, they tend to isolate one random aspect to place blame. For example, Justin Ross, Tee Higgins and Hunter R were excellent receivers who were a big part of our last championship run. They ran great routes; caught every ball they touched even the contested ones and were able to get separation based on skill level rather than their speed. Williams is the only receiver on our roster with this level of talent.

The logic you used reminds me of when someone says a DL is undersized (as an example) pointing size as the issue but forget Grady Jarrett and Rob Bodine were both small for the position yet dominated.

The LB group is as fast as we have had since Dabo has been HC! Maybe ever!
The RB group = as a whole might be slightly slower than the past year, if any at all. "As A WHOLE".
The TE group is = to previous years!
The QB is not as fast as past QB's.
The WR group as a whole is far less speedy than in past years! This is where I think you see the biggest opportunity for improvement. No speed = no separation = "no big explosive plays on a consistent basis"! Or at least a somewhat consistent basis.

I think our speed at DE and DB is as good as it has ever been.

ETN had elite speed but also balance at full speed. That is a tricky talent for a running back.
He also benefited from one of the greatest college QBs of all time and several NFL WRs. ETN had many carries where he got to second level because QB was a threat to run and the passing game was scary (for opposing DC)

In Ships smaller sample size, he has had some good long runs. I would argue that he has some better slip in traffic when multiple tacklers are hitting him. I would argue that ETN had a little better high end speed but definitely better balance at full speed.

Ship suffered last year from ineptitude in passing game and poor OL play for first 2/3rds of the season. He also suffered from a slow decision QB. That extra half count of holding the handoff can close a gap quickly. And DJ was just not a threat to run last year. Lastly poor WR blocking.

This year we are seeing better OL play, better WR play (and mostly in blocking), TEs as a passing threat and a more efficient QB as a runner. That is helping Shipley and all the RBs.

Its never really fair to compare players from different eras, but lets see how this year plays out and then the next before we hook Ship and ETN in a comparison.

I think we have decent speed over the yrs , with good size, but the 2 things we've been missing that's obvious are GREAT HANDS, & GREAT ROUTES .

Sometimes the guys are open and the pass is late or the wide open guy is not even seen by the QB not looking over the field.

I vividly remember, when FSU first joined the ACC, the

biggest, dominating difference between them and everybody else was team speed. They literally had the athletes on offense and defense to beat other teams to the edge. It took almost a decade for some of the other ACC teams, including us, to begin to catch up to that speed.

I believe, at least on defense, this current Clemson team could have hung with the best of those speedy FSU teams. Offensively, probably not so much.

Wiggins is a burner that also played WR
in HS. Now that our corners are healthy
maybe Streeter can tinker around some with his
explosiveness. Perhaps when the game is out
of hand he could get a shot.

Do y’all even go to games or do you just listen to what the tv heads say about us?? Go watch us live then come back and tell me we don’t have speed anymore. Shipley has been clocked over 20mph idk in whos mind that isn’t ELITE speed but I wanna see you run faster. Shipley doesn’t have the same style as ETN so it’s not going to look the same also ETN had better acceleration then Ship but to act like he’s slow is wild.
