Objective view (attempt) from disappointed tiger fan (long)

Oct 14, 2017, 9:12 AM

Excuse the rambling nature of the thoughts as I write them...

In Dabo we trust -
Its been the motto and who can argue considering the recent success, the state of the program, the incredible recruiting advantage that's been built? BUT - This doesn't mean our coaches are beyond making stupid mistakes. This brings me to playing KB...

KB and the QB situation -
I don't have an issue with trying to start KB if he looked somewhat mobile during practice. My issue is that it is utterly inexcusable to not be prepared to go a different direction than KB this game. They said ZC took some of the first team reps. Good for them.... but obviously not enough that they were prepared to count on him. Elliot said after the game that they knew KB would be limited running the ball. SO before the game starts they were already going to remove a HUGE part of our offense. Elliot then says that we have enough talent around KB that they should be able to pick up the slack. I agree to a point but the lack of understanding of who we are as an offense and what makes this offense move is embarrassing and frustrating. AT NO POINT THIS SEASON HAS KB LOOKED GREAT AS A PASSER. Yes, KB has made some great throws but you are kidding yourself to suggest he is anything more than an average passer. I would argue that his passing ability is only as good as it is BECAUSE OF HIS RUNNING THREAT. If KB can't run and can't scramble out of pressure he is a sitting duck and a HUGE liability. As far as preparing for a game without KB, Hindsight is 20/20 but this staff should have had ZC (if that is who they believe in) taking a high percentage of first team snaps. Personally, I think they should have had a package of plays ready for Hunter Johnson as well. Think about it - If KB goes down you have and unknown commodity at QB coming in. While its a disadvantage for us it is also an unknown to your opponent. I would have had about 10 plays that HJ would have practice with the first team. The thinking would be he could have gone in AFTER ZC and provide a different feel and look....possibly for a complete series depending on situation. You could go back to ZC the next series just to keep the defense from settling in on the new QB (keep them guessing). Obviously if ZC or HJ started to click you run with him a little longer. Our coaches knew KB was hurt. They knew he was limited. They knew he was limping early in the game. They saw what EVERYONE else saw. Yet they either failed to trust their preparation of ZC or they were just bull-headed to think they could turn KB into a drop back pocket passer and give him time to throw. There is no excuse. The only response is "We handled this ALL WRONG."

The run game -
ETN is AWESOM....but he still is a huge liability in the passing game. He gives and he takes away. His missed blitz pick up killed a drive by ZC. I find it interesting because the coaches trusted him, a freshman who started in Aug, in that situation - BUT - they don't trust HJ who has been here since spring to take a few snaps. I would have liked to see us call more runs with ZC both designed, ZR, or RPO's. Syracuse came in not respecting the QB run.... we needed to force them to respect it.

Defense -
This one seems a little more simple to me. WE just did not want it as much as they did. Syracuse just took it to us. They believed and believed early. I do think that our offense hurt our defense some by not extending drives but our defense had penalty after penalty. I still don't understand what we were trying to do to defend their best WR. I felt like we would give up 14-17 points so its not that far from what I expected. My issues is how we looked in giving them up. Dino is a freaking great coach!

Special teams -
We looked awesome on kick coverage.... we have come SOOOOOO far. But kicking killed us. I can't pile on the kid for the misses. His technique needs work and its not going to change and become routine in a few weeks. Its going to take time....unfortunately.

Bottom Line -
We never looked like we were in control. We never had any rhythm. We had a major handicap that our staff arrogantly understated to themselves. There was plenty of BAD this game which generally goes right to the top when you are placing blame.

I wonder why QB runs were not called with ZC since Sry. was

Exactly. ZC had one called run and that went for 5 yards. I'll take that!

check my math but 3 x 5 yards moves the chains every time

Right.... obviously probably not going to get that every time especially consecutively..... but point made for sure

And the very next play was ETN to the house...

Seemed like they had to cover the QB runs and it opened the RB to me.

Go Tigers!!!

I didn't even notice that. Great catch! I wonder why we never went to that play going the other way.

I don't think we ever gave the ball on a jet sweep and we only ran the pitch play with once (that was with ZC because there was no way KB was going to threaten them)

I think you nailed it ...... I give Syracuse a lot of credit and Dino won the chess match with Dabo, but many of our problems started with game prep ...... perfectly agree about the KB situation. Syracuse looked like they prepared knowing exactly what we were going to do .... and even our defense prepared like we had no idea of what they were going to do.

First time in a while where we looked lost on defense. I do think Dino's system has a lot to do with that but its not like we don't have film.

KB does not look comfortable throwing the ball and when he does he's very average. He doesn't have pocket presence and If it weren't for the acrobatics by our WRs, just think what his stats would look like. Play calling is shaky/scary/timid/unimaginative. We got by before because we could "out talent" a bad call, not so this year. Defense made it's reputation by being disruptive and living in the back field. Wish Lamar would have played more and they need to turn Dexter loose and not just clog the middle. Need the push up the middle to pressure these QBs we are turning into Heisman hopefuls.

I agree.... I'm guessing they felt that Tre was a liability in coverage but it would have been worth a shot (hindsight)

Spence is a redshirt junior. His had a few years, not a few weeks.

True, but if he hasn't changed it by now... Is not happening in "A few weeks"

Good analysis, D gave up too much time of possession to 'cuse and too many points. Not very smart plays on D extended drives on critical possessions.

I really would have like to see Hunter Johnson, he has really good speed that we have not seen yet because he gets rid of the ball faster than either KB or ZC....

Also had the feel of the "just throw a pass because you will get a penalty or reception" kind of game too...

We scored 24 points, should have been enough.

I agree.... And there are "positives" that you can spin from this. One missed tackle on the opening drive and we were in a hole to start.

Two missed kicks.... make one and game is changed.

The fake punt.... it sounds like it was only an option but i would rather us have tried to run on that 3rd down and make it a 4th and short instead of throwing a pass to get it all. Especially if you were thinking of faking the punt.
