Oatmeal Is Back !!!!!

Mar 9, 2020, 8:26 PM

When I was a little tyke, most everyone in my family preferred oatmeal over corn lakes and similar cereals. My Dad seemed to prefer raisins with his oatmeal but I liked strawberries and other fruits when they were in season. Menus and our likes and dislikes seem to change the things we like. I've always liked oatmeal but seldom prepare it for breakfast.

Recently, my daughter and I were in a grocery store. I make a meat loaf from time to time and the recipe calls for oatmeal. We needed a package of oatmeal so we were in the oatmeal section. Looking around we saw a box with small packages of oatmeal, some with peaches, strawberries, blue berries and bran. We decided to get a box and give them a try. Well, we were delighted. Just add hot water or hot milk and stir. I like them as a snack and sometimes, about 9:00 PM, they make a nice snack.

So, if you love oatmeal but have not had any lately, try those little packets.

As my Dad used to say, oatmeal is good for you, it will stick to your ribs.

Glad you finally got introduced to this. It is a pretty regular item on my breakfast menu, and the variety and ease of preparation makes it a "no-brainer" IMO. I generally add some fresh fruit to mine every day, using fruit that is in season. Particular favorites are blue-berries, straw- berries, raspberries, peaches, apples; heck, everything goes with it!

my dad ate oatmeal almost every day.said it did wonders for his constitution.on the subject of meatloaf,if your recipe calls for ketchup, try subbing barbecue sauce(bullseye original is my fav).maybe 2 tablespoons or so along with some Worcestershire to taste.gives the loaf a nice flavor.

Sometimes I add the BBQ sauce. I screwed up my last meatloaf. I use tomato sauce but could not find any (should have looked in the other pantry). I used tomato paste and it ruined the flavor. It wasn't fit for consumption so I threw out over one half of the loaf.

Good source of fiber

Mar 9, 2020, 8:47 PM

I'm like you, I like the ease of preparing the little
packets. I'll take 2, mix them with some milk, and heat
in the microwave for a couple of minutes and it's ready.
However, they add sugar to these packets. So you have to
decide between the ease of preparing the packets versus
the better nutritional value of Quaker oats prepared on
the stove.

Re: Oatmeal - Also try Hi Protein packets

Mr Joe - Quaker has only a couple of flavors of the Hi Protein instant oatmeal, but for the same effort you get 10 grams of get up and go!

I have become some what of a scratch chef on oatmeal preparation. What I do is boil the oatmeal in water until most of the water is gone. Then I add whole milk until I have the consistency and it has gotten back up to temperature. Then I like to add chunky peanut butter , some real butter, a little salt and then add the secret ingredient -- honey! Wife absolutely loves it! She is purring all day! Wifes happy everyone is!

Normal breakfast routine (when not traveling.) Alternating days: One of those little oatmeal packets, Quaker original, half a banana sliced up, two-to-four strawberries, depending on size, sliced up, dozen-to-15 or so blueberries. Nuke oatmeal, add a pack of artificial sweetener or half spoon of sugar, and a few pats of ersatz butter and stir, then top with (raw) fruit. Chow down, save about a tablespoon worth of oatmeal in bottom of bowl and put on floor for slavering basset hound to slurp up. Alternate day, similar routine, but with Eggo-style waffle (oddly enough I think the Publix generics are better than the authentic Eggos. Could be psychological, because, you know, cheaper.) Anyway, toast one and a quarter syrup delivery vessels, aka waffles, spread butter, real or fake, add syrup and same fruit as with oatmeal. For variety, other fruits, such as peaches, mango,(canned or fresh) grapes and such can be thrown in as cravings or contents of larder dictate. Save a couple of bites and give to aforementioned dog (wipe up excess syrup first.) Oatmeal is the key, though. Tastes good and keeps you (and dog) regular.

really like it that much, but it's fast and I'm trying to eat a little healthier. For years i ate a bagel with cream cheese nearly every morning which was much tastier but I'm trying to cut back a bit on the gluten and dairy.

like the steel-cut oatmeal. I add a pinch of salt, some cinnamon, a little maple syrup to sweeten (sometimes, honey), and some kind of nut (walnuts, pecans are my favorites).

Anyone tried the Kodiak Oatmeal cups? I am a huge fan of their pancake/waffle mix - it is high protein.

rolled oats is not a texture I like ... unless I am using it as a topping for cobblers. Then, it is crispy from the butter and brown sugar.

100% rolled oats, almond milk, microwave for about 2.5-3 minutes. Add natural PB, honey, salt, and pepper. I eat this at night a lot of times to curb my desire for something sweet. Plus it fills me up and keeps me from snacking. It is also good for lowering your cholesterol.

Don’t use regular peanut butter. It has hydrogenated oil in it and is not good for your body at all. Honey is a wonderful natural sweetener. Salt in moderation isn’t bad. Pepper isn’t bad for you at all. One cup of unsweetened almond milk has only 30 calories in it.

If I don’t eat something like this at night I find myself wanting to snack and end up eating something really bad for me.

I eat steel cut instant oats with some almond milk and cut up fruit and either a dollop of honey or a spoon of almond butter. Keeps me filled until lunch and as a bonus I get to have an enjoyable BM during the day :)
