Now that we have reached the NCAAT for the 2nd time...

Mar 16, 2021, 6:11 PM

In four years, does that meet your expectations for the program?

It doesn't for me, but next year if we make it will be the 3rd time in five years and that would be closer to my expectations.

If we can make it 3 out of every five years including one run to at least to the sweet sixteen and one where we at least win a game that would be a good program I will add I would like to us get to the ACCT Championship once every five to six years and the semis one other year in that period. We still aren't there yet.

What are your winning expectations for the program?

My problem with our program is that I don't see us taking the next step with Brownell. Just look at Nate Oats at Alabama, he has them at a 2 seed and this is only his 3rd year their. Our scoring is always ranked between 190-250 in the country every year and I really don't see any attempt by Brownell to fix it. Its been 10 years and this is the best its gonna get with him. So, I think we'll always be solid with Brownell, but I believe there is a coach out there that can take us to the next level. Virginia had no real basketball success until Tony Bennett came along and look at them now. You don't need to be a blue blood to win.

My expectations are that we should at least be in the tournament every other year.

Virginia no real basketball success? You must be a youngster. Ever heard of Ralph Sampson?

Virginia only had 16 tournament appearances in 70 years until Bennett came along. They've had 8 appearances and a NC with Bennett since he was hired in 2009. They're not a historic powerhouse.

Virginia’s history prior to Bennett is far better than ours.

Plus, they built a new arena a few years before he arrived, rather than renovating like we did.

I remember Ralph. It was one of the first basketball games I ever attended at LJ. I think Clemson knocked off Sampson once or twice with MOOOOSE Campbell as the center. Loved his thunder dunks. LJ rocked loud back then.

Brownell needs to get some power forwards that can just go up and jam it. Correct me if I’m wrong, but he has yet to put a sustainable player in the NBA in 11 years? That is pathetic being in the ACC. You’d have to accidentally at least get one in that time span.

GO TIGERS!

My expectation would be more that every other season...

That is still just two years in four years and three in six years. I really think we need to get over the hump and go two years in row under Brad.

Not to take anything away from Nate Oates because I think he’s a good coach

but he inherited a lot of talent. Avery Johnson recruited well but wasn’t a great coach at the college level.

Saying we made it for the 2nd time in 4 years is misleading

since there wasn’t a tournament last year.

We have made 2 of the last 3 NCAA Tournaments.

And, we arguably should’ve made it in 2019. Our NET was in the 30s.

We are not where I want to be, but I believe we are certainly progressing in that direction.

But we would not have made the tourney last year. We were not winning 4 games in four days to win the ACCT. We might not have made the NIT last year.

If we can compete for NCAA berths most years and regularly finish in the top half of the ACC with an occasional run when everything aligns, that would satisfy me.

The only catch is I no longer want to see us blown out regularly in the ACC and I don't want to watch games where our players appear clueless and unable to do basic things like inbound the ball.
