Now that a US Journalist has been killed in Ukraine

Mar 13, 2022, 3:30 PM

FYI - members of the press and journalists do NOT constitute a special protected class in The Law of Land Warfare. According to the The Law of Land Warfare, unarmed journalists are civilian non-combatants and are afforded the exact same protections as civilians. If a journalist is embedded with a military unit and is credentialed by the government of that military unit, the journalist is still treated as a civilian but is entitled to POW status if captured.

Sometimes I think journalists need to remember this and realize that if they are covering a conflict where one side is clearly violating The Law of Land Warfare by intentionally targeting civilians, then yelling "journalist" or holding up one's press credentials when they are shooting at you probably won't stop them...

It’s just a matter of time now. We are at war with Russia. The iPhone has completely changed how countries handle war. 20 years ago we would be seeing so much less combat and likely not be as committed.

Send everything but troops and hope for the best. I’m scared to see how far Putin will take it. Once we are in, we are in for good.

I know millions are being floated to those close to Putin to create a coup. Hopefully these people do the right thing for the world and themselves and take action.

Yeah, phones are a big deal. Like in the 2020 election when every social media company went total leftist.

They didn't go "leftist", they went anti-Trump. For exactly the same reason everybody's against Putin now. He was awful and everybody except his cult knew it.

"intentionally targeting civilians" = atrocity propaganda

and can be applied to both sides. Also can be applied to the US for the last 30+ years in the middle east.

and a private one in Nicaragua during Iran Contra. He was shot out constantly, hit 1x. after that he said there is nothing more terrifying than looking through a camera lens during combat and not being able to see what is going on around you. If they are targeting civilians, then I can nto imagine journalists are going to be any safer.

FYI

All journalists who go into situations like this know full well all the risks. I'm not sure why anyone thinks they do not. They do not consider themselves a special protected class.

The guy who was killed was not yelling "journalist" or holding up his press credentials.

Journalists who enter these situations often where something identifying themselves as press so they are not mistaken as combatants and in hopes the fighting sides won't target them. But they fully know this isn't a guarantee.
