Not one for being negative but Richardson is insufferable

Does not give off the same humility that the culture has cultivated over the years. When asked about TE effectiveness, he calls out the reporter to “separate fact from fiction” and quotes a 96% TE use rate. Then says it is a false narrative. I don’t think it was the spirit of the question or what the narrative is at large. People know that Clemsons base O is 11 personnel and has a TE on the field - the problem is that the TEs haven’t been effective on the field… it is actually even worse when you say, well the productivity is down but they are on the field. That highlights the problem even more.
I don’t know, maybe I’m off base here, but I’m not impressed so far with Richardson’s interviews. Wes and company seem fantastic, and fit the culture. But Richardson seems out of place. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong; I hope so.

Normally your posts are at a minimum 3 paragraphs but on a subject which you likely have a very well informed perspective and specific knowledge & insight, you offer a 5 word defense?

Take than you on the interview. 1st he mentions upfront about what they have to combat on the recruiting trail- his entire answer is in context to that. Also to me he sounds more like Dabo in that response than most other asst coaches I’ve heard. It’s the same way Dabo brings facts based on research and then puts it back on the individual player to earn it at then end of the day

100% what you said!
The negative Clemson recruiting probably added a bit of intensity. Some people take intensity as something bad! Wasn't bad in my eyes; just setting the record straight. Perhaps the question will get put to bed; as it should until the season starts and a few games are played!

Seemed insecure and instead of owning it with vulnerability and accountability became confrontational and pretentious.

Maybe he is tired of the BS that reporters ask. He was at Northwestern a few miles down the road from where I last lived and never heard anything negative surrounding him or his programs. On another note you have to figure he was vetted extensively by Dabo before being offered the position.

The reporter asked about the offense being better when the TEs are more involved. Seemed reasonable. Maybe he was having an off day but the optics were poor (IMO) when he started asking reporters questions in an aggressive way.

We had the most productive year for TEs

since Jordan Leggett.
We won a national championship in 2018 by destroying Alabama. We used the TE very little that year.
We had the most productive passing offense in Clemson history in 2020, with very little TE production.
I like TEs involved like they were last year and expect much the same. Despite that, we need more production from our WRs. Thing is, there's only one ball.
We can be very, very successful on offense whether or not we involve the TE same as last year. The biggest key to our offense is increased accuracy. Not the TE.
There's only one ball to go around. We have very talented RBs, TEs, and WRs. The key is a balance between run and pass, and being far more productive than we were last year. It doesn't matter if we get balanced with TEs, WRs, or both, but we need a more effective passing game period.

I don’t see that as arrogant or aggressive at all. He seemed very prepared to answer the question, as he implied he had heard that statement on the recruiting trail before. He explained that the TE gets used alot, as passes caught is not really an indicator of TE usage at all. Now if the reporter had specifically asked if they were going to try to get the TE more catches to increase offensive productivity, that would have likely gotten a very different answer. His answer sounded well spoken and appropriate to me.

I watched the whole interview, sounds ok to me. Highly successful guy who's been around Dabo for seven years now.
I am sorry but I have to go with Dabo on this one.

to set the record straight. I didn't see that as having anything to do with the reporters. That answer was targeted at critics, recruits, etc.

I like the attitude he brings to the table. College football is not a sewing circle. Perhaps some of our other coaches are insufferably passive?
BTW my guess is his response was planned to be used on the recruiting trail. Other teams are obviously using catches to recruit against so he created something to be used to push back. Just like Dabo throwing the fans under the bus protecting DJ the response is often not targeted for old men who live on t-net

Agree that "being on the field" does not equate to utilization.

Sounds like to me that he thinks that he is above going on the recruiting trail. Also sounds Defensive. Go ahead and do the thumbs down. A little too arrogant for me. Time will tell. GO TIGERS!

I don't think that Richardson is insufferable, but he is definitely on the defensive, as he should be. Why? Because, it is ridiculous for him to defend the TE play by letting us know how often they are on the field. How about sharing how many passes have been thrown to the TE vs how many are caught or caught for more than 2 yds. We have not had a positive-result TE since Leggett. Jordan may have dropped a few but, But I cannot remember because he caught so many BIG ones. I was shocked last year when 84 caught a BIG one for us because he and others dropped so many. When will we be able to truly trust the TE to catch the ball for us again. That's what Richardson should be focused on and explaining. Now to the positive: Briningstool looks to be the answer at TE IMO! Richardson needs to get him in there blocking and catching the ball for TD's because I think he can do it just like those Alabama TEs that tore big holes in our vaulted defenses. BTW, he's the only one though IMO.
