Not fair to Tony Elliot

Oct 13, 2022, 9:09 AM

I knew the comparison was going to happen sooner or later but don’t think you can lay the blame solely on Coach Elliot

I love Coach Elliott and wish him success for many reasons, and comparisons like this are unfair due to many factors on both sides of the equation. But the numbers do stand out even if coincidental.

Hope TE proves his new team is on a journey that may take a step back to push even further forward.

Tony E- Great man. Really good recruiter. Obviously a Clemson guy so we always pull for him.

As an OC, he was not great at Clemson. The “joes” made him look really good at times, but his calling and scheme left allot to be desired. And this was during the TL years.

I don't think Elliott is a particularly good OC

Oct 13, 2022, 9:45 AM [ in reply to Re: Not fair to Tony Elliot ]

But our defense also gave up 42 to LSU (28 in the 1st half) and 49 to Ohio State (35 in the 1st half). Oh and even if we had beaten OSU in 2020 we still would've faced an even better team with an even more devastating offense in Bama.

So, while our offense might not have been up to snuff in those games, the defense played just as big of a role, and probably a bigger one, in our losing.

And just in general, saying anyone "shouldve" won 3 titles in a row is ridiculous. When's the last time anyone has done yet? Was it Oklahoma like 60 years ago? Saban hasn't even managed that feat.

Oct 13, 2022, 10:04 AM [ in reply to I don't think Elliott is a particularly good OC ]

I'm still bitter that Clemson had it's best recruiting classes of all time ... and couldn't beat LSU or Ohio State.

Like just watch the play when Skalski got targeting against LSU and little BV's kid went in as linebacker and was absolutely TRUCKED at the 10 or 15 yd line.

He just stood there and got laid out. He would then go on the be the LB over Barrett Carter, Trenton, Mike Jones, etc

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 13, 2022, 9:28 AM

Hard to objectively compare two programs/rosters as different as Clemson and UVA BUT the offensive trend where Elliot has now spent his last two years does raise an eyebrow.

Listening to Elliott the other day it sounds like he is fighting a "that's not the way we did it with Bronco" problem at UVA. Not saying that Bronco's culture was bad but it appears to be hindering buy-in to what Elliott is trying to do. I wish Elliott all the success in the world and hope he can pull it together at UVA.

Begs the question: does Elliott have the will (and admin support) to clean house if necessary? Could turn the rebuild into a 5-year project.

Also, is he serving as the OC or just the HC?

Hope he rebounds fast for his sake. Couldn’t care less about UVA beyond his own success.

Re: Compare O-Lines 2022 vs 2021 for UVA and for Clemson

Oct 13, 2022, 9:38 AM

A better comparison (but not as easy nor as fun as comparing Yr. vs. Yr. QB play) is that of the 2021 vs. 2022 O-Line play for UVA and Clemson.

2021: UVA had an excellent O-line, led by their super-stud Center Olusegun Oluwatimi. This is the guy who portal'd out of UVA after 2021 season and ended up as Michigan's starting C for 2022. (This is one of the very few guys that Dabo went after in the portal.)

Ryan Nelson - 2021 OL starter for entire season
Chris Glaser - 2021 OL starter for entire season
Ryan Swoboda - 2021 OL starter for entire season
Bobby Haskins - started 2nd half of 2021

Every single one of these guys are gone from UVA's 2022 roster.

No wonder that UVA QB Brennan Armstrong's 2022 stats are pathetic when compared to 2021.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For DJU, the opposite happened (OK, our OL wasn't as terrible in 2021 as UVA's is in 2022, but you get the general idea). Our OL play is far far better this year than it was in 2021.

That oline trickles. Their yardage per attempt is way down (shows they have to get it out quickly) and their efficiency is way down.

But here is the funny part. They are just as good as Cuse for getting a first down. They ain't bad on that front - middling, yeah but that says something. But as the field gets condensed, they struggle more and more and that is where you see the oline issues form as now there is less space for openings to develop. They are also struggling to run the ball which just makes it worse too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not fair to Tony Elliot

Oct 13, 2022, 10:14 AM

He is putting in a system that doesn't fit for the athletes they have.

Trying to run the same system he ran at Clemson w/o the deep ball threat for those 50/50 plays.

Armstrong was one of the top QBs in the league last season

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

not fair to SOLELY blame TE, but he wasn't a great OC

Oct 13, 2022, 10:14 AM

once the key ingredient of Jeff Scott left........as Co-Coordinators they made a good team

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not fair to Tony Elliot

Oct 13, 2022, 11:07 AM

The OL situation is left out of that equation.

Clemson's 2021 OL wasnt great much of the season but got better at run blocking later in the season.

UVAs 2021 OL was pretty good.

Clemson's 2022 OL has great pass pro

UVA's 2022 OL is not good

Easy to just draw a line through TE for this and it may play out that way as time goes but definitely more variables here that a tweet pic doesnt cover.

One thing we have this year that we didn't last year...

Oct 13, 2022, 1:17 PM

was a trimmed down playcalling. DJ is limited to obeying the calls rather than choosing between pass, run or handoff or any combination thereof.

I can't say it's all on TE but a lack of TE brought these decisions forward. At some point one just has to say, 'dance with the one that brung you,' and leave the options out. DJ is doing fine with that recent limitation.

Armstrong could have left and helped a good program be much better. Now he is saddled with the same vanilla offense he ran at Clemson last year. i think Elliot is a great person that truly wants to do what is best for the player and the school. I think he has a chance to be a fine head coach just stay out of the play calling

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 14, 2022, 2:51 PM

Statistics much?

Yet again, we were hampered last year by four things:

1. (7) different lineups on the OL (due to injuries)
2. WR injuries and inexperience.
3. RB inexperience

and most importantly,

3. We STRUGGLED MIGHTILY at the most important position the field. DJ.

There are no magic play calls you can run when the four things above are in bad shape.

To say Tony was a poor playcaller is absurd. He led us to a the most explosive offenses and greatest accomplishments in Clemson history. Please have some common sense.
