Do you think Murphy can break our DE curse with the NFL?

Dec 13, 2022, 7:42 PM

We've had a lot of high profile DEs drafted high in the NFL draft, but for whatever reason they have struggled to have success on the next level. Beasley had one good year but he's now out of the league and Shaq seems to be a guy that is good enough to make roster and play but he's turned into a "journeyman" type guy. There hasn't been much beyond those guys though. Our DE struggles seem like such a headscratcher considering the enormous success we had of our DTs panning out. Between Grady Jarrett, DJ Reader, Christian Wilkins, and Dexter Lawrence, that's about 4 of the best 7 or 8 DTs in the league.

I know Murphy will test well and he's graded solidly in games, but his lack of production this year in spite of not really being game planned by coaches is somewhat alarming. Do you think he'll be able to achieve what Cle, Vic, Dodd, and others couldn't?

I think Murphy should have tackled better in South Bend.***

My eyes, and what Dabo said about him earlier in the season, tells me that inconsistency was intentional. Right or wrong, highly projected players at times loaf it their last year and the only reason they get by with it is the NFL teams don’t appear to penalize (lower draft) them for it.

Murphy pulled a Clowney this year. Was unstoppable any time he wanted to be but took a lot of plays off. He will get drafted high and get paid but then disappear into obscurity.
