Odds that Spurrier has coached his last game at the roach?

Jan 1, 2014, 10:24 PM

Just hit 300 wins, most successful coot QB gone, major D members leaving for the draft. Odds of winning SEC looking dimmer. Clemson finally recovering for mid-season coaching change from Bowden to Dabo.

Anyone got odds he's leaving before next year's mediocre season so they can erect a statue to him?

He does not have 300 wins, 300 games***

I don't think he's going anywhere, he looked pretty happy in that post game interview. As long as he is having fun he will stay

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spurrier will over stay his welcome like Mack Brown, Bowden

Jan 2, 2014, 3:33 AM

Beamer and Holtz (and countless other has beens) so he will eventually produce a peak season - this might have been it - then the decline will begin.

He'll stay until he sees a drop off in talent and no chance

Didn't realize it till the post game interview. But he has finally changed.

He isn't they guy that wants to win it all anymore. The type that wouldn't let his fan base coddle him for falling short of a championship game. Now he is petting the erm... heads of the South Carolina fan base by talking about state championships. He wants them to be happy with what he is doing because he won't be doing much else and wants to ride that job to retirement or the promotion of Jr.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well said...

Jan 1, 2014, 10:43 PM

I think you are 100% right. He has slowly managed to convince their fan base that winning that state championship is way better than an SEC or anything else. He is laughing all the way yo the bank.

As long as he can take a breath he will be coaching. Why should he stop now when he can play teams that don't know to run the ball in a bowl game, when they have 2 1000 yard rushers in the back field. He can play Missouri each year know they won't beat him when they will just run 3 straight times and punt it back over to him, and finally as long as he has his rivals number. He would be a fool to quit now. This year has really shown me that there are many coaches that out coach themselves and try to be too smart for their own team's good. Better hope for a stroke or heart attack to keep him off the field.

after the Bama win. As far as Spurrier is concerned, HE is the reason they are winning. It'll take a down year or 2 to get him out to pasture, methinks.

year. He likely won't quit until he does that --- or his wife tells him to quit or he dies. I'm thinking his wife will tell him to quit in the next few years.

He will stay until he breaks Bear Bryant's record for most SEC wins.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I thought there was a good chance with the key players

Jan 1, 2014, 10:46 PM

that he is losing after this year but once I heard him take his jab at us today I knew it was for recruiting purposes. Looks like we'll have to deal with him for awhile. If we want to shut him up we need to beat them.

If the Tigers are just now recovering from the mid-season coaching change from over 5 years ago, then that might be a bigger concern going forward than the Spurrier soap opera.

If you go back a find old news there were many that were ready to send OBC out to pasture and admit the game had passed him by, especially after losing to Dabo in their first meeting.

His record in the first 5 years: 7-5, 8-5, 6-6, 7-6, 7-6

Also remember the recruiting class that was lost with Bowden being fired and the long transition from "quicker" undersized linemen of Bowden to larger ones now.

MCB - I noticed that too and somewhat agreed with the OP's comments except for that little nugget. Dabo has had the team highly ranked at times for the past few years....I didn't know there was still a "corner to turn". Seems like Dabo has done that.

Sometimes, people who reach certain ages are content

and unwilling to tackle challenges other than what they may be already facing.

Coach Spurrier already is regarded as one of the greatest masters of the game and knows that he has been successful to a degree at South Carolina. His greatest accomplishment has been changing the mindset, for the Gamecocks now view themselves as a far better program than those in the past.

The entire Columbia community, the S.C. administration and the fan base are extremely supportive, as they should be, and I simply believe he thinks conference championships are still winnable. Just because some may think his recruiting has lagged, I don't believe for a second that he has tossed that part of his job out the window...he knows his needs better than any of us.

Our good, younger TNetters have to understand: even at his advancing age, Spurrier has the passions of youth in his work, and often that's enough to keep a person highly active, providing his health holds. I know...I'm in the same boat being only a couple of years younger.

Thus, I believe he may stick around a while longer given one important factor: Mrs. Spurrier will have to agree.
