Anonymous "Twitter fingers" send Elliott hateful messages following loss

Offensive coordinator Tony Elliott doesn’t have a huge presence on social media, but he does use it and check it for recruiting purposes. Following Saturday’s loss to Georgia, he learned the dark side of those with anonymous “Twitter fingers.” Full Story »

Tony makes 2 million dollars a year. He should ignore Twitter and focus on fixing the offense.

I not as worried about Tony Elliot as it is an embarrassment to have fans like that in the Clemson Family.

But how would you feel if people you work with sent you trash tweets like Coach Elliot received. I don’t care how much he makes he is still human and has feelings just like you and me.

In my humble opinion, I think at some point people simply need to be accountable for their shortcomings. I love Tony Elliot, hell I love Caldwell. Incredible men. Incredibly good faithful, upstanding Clemson men.

But we are coming up short in big games via the same ways. That reduces our ability to raise more great Clemson products in the long term.

Let's all be frickin honest for a moment-this is a business, and in business (unless you are a meteorologist) making the same mistakes over and over should have consequences. It's OK to be a fan that is also un-biased. We just want to be the best we can. It's awesome our 18-20 something year-old young folks will pour their heart and soul into anything they are told. But are they being told the right things?

This is really scary stuff

I don't think OL technique is the issue.

Sep 7, 2021, 1:51 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Anonymous "Twitter fingers" send Elliott hateful messages following loss ]

It's strength and physicality. We routinely get pushed around by more physical teams, and I honestly don't think we're being physical enough in preparation. I think we spend too much time practicing like its 7-on-7 passing drills, and smashmouth football isn't really part or what we're practicing. And to top it off, the Oklahoma drills were eliminated by the NCAA.

We have declined in physicality since the 2018 natty. We have grown soft since then. I hate it, but the proof is in the pudding. The defense plays tough, but the offense is too much finesse.

No doubt there are redneck, uneducated people out there that are probably stupid enough to bet on football and would do things like that. Our game was always going to be down to the wire and probably decided by a turnover and it was. Coach Elliott called the game based on what our staff thought gave us the best chance. We got beat by a very good team, get over it.

It's easy to criticize when you're anonymous, but to most people it's a little harder when you are out there for the world to see. While I think Tony Elliot and Robbie Caldwell didn't measure up, I give them credit for owning it and for trying to fix it. Let's see how we respond and what adjustments we make. Jury's still out on Coach Elliot, but Coach Caldwell has had many chances, and he has many (I won't call them fails out of respect for a good man)shortcomings, but I do expect better from our OL coach. I think of all the opportunities we have missed out on because our OL wasn't elite. I want that fixed!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How would Jeff Scott have made difference against

Sep 7, 2021, 1:45 PM

1. LSU - unstoppable offense. Nothing to do with playcalling.
2. ND - no running game due to no blocking. Poor defensive performance. Nothing to do with playcalling.
3. OSU - physical beatdown. Nothing to do with playcalling.
4. UGA - atrocious OL and QB play. No run blocking, no pass blocking. No time for anything to develop. Quick plays were called pretty much all night, and still couldn't get offense going. Even when given some time, QB was holding ball or not running.

What could Jeff Scott have done in any of these games?

And like I said, you would crap your pants before you stood in front of any coach and told him he was horrible.

To me , hateful comments remove any credibility from the one doing the complaining. If you want to offer your own analysis fine but do it in a way that shows you know something. This is the same guy who has helped us to 2 Natties and 6 straight ACC Championships. By the way I don’t think he called a good game either but don’t see the point in castigating him publicly.

Hind site is 20/20. He gets paid 2 million a year and he finally figures it out after the game is over. That is not why he gets paid the major bucks. He made no adjustments during the game. How hard would it be to just tell your 250 lb qb to just run the frigging ball when he felt pressured and not just sit back there and take a as frigging sack every time. Are we will would put someone else out there who would. The Clemson defense should be highly pissed with him because they even gave him the ball within scoring position and they loss yardage which kept us out of field goal range. This is why he has not been offered a head coaching job. Excuses do not make up for that crap you called out there Saturday night. This loss was solely on you Elliot. Go Tigers!!!!

of our best run in program history.

The thing is - there are no plays to call when you can't run block, pass block, or execute simple pasd plays.

There are no magic plays when you don't have a functional OL or QB on the field.

We tried adjusting, but there's nothing you can do when the most key parts of an offense aren't functioning.

Sep 7, 2021, 8:27 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Anonymous "Twitter fingers" send Elliott hateful messages following loss ]

Yes, T.E. makes his $2M per year and is supposed to decide to run at the goal line during the game, not after the game after he receives mean tweets. Also, an expectation as part of that salary, is to not make mistakes on a calls that puts a young QB in a bad situation against a Top 5 team.

Lastly T.E., did DJ ever get into a situation at practice where he looked the wrong direction to begin his reads, didn't run when he should have or make any wrong decisions? If he made any of those mistakes, why wasn't he coached up then? Now he's going to get coached up after the Tigers lose.

Re: TNET: Anonymous "Twitter fingers" send Elliott hateful messages following loss

Sep 6, 2021, 6:19 PM

If we had been successful and won the game, everything would have been fine. When players don't execute and make bad decisions, it is not always the game plan or the coaches fault ..... although they will often take responsibility, as they are not going to throw players under the bus. In hindsight, I am sure that Coach Elliot would have done some different things. I think I heard Kirby say that our soft pass coverage was something they did not expect, so maybe he should be fired too since he did not have our game plan. When you play top tier teams, you can lose because in most cases they have as good or better players.

Sep 6, 2021, 7:16 PM

Well here's the thing and I don't send hateful social media messages and yes, young player make mistakes and that is part of growing up BUT I think coaches that make millions and are adults should be accountable. He addressed the players working hard and such and I have NO DOUBT that they did and I am proud of them for that - I didn't see anyone saying the players didn't try hard and didn't want to win. What I did see for I don't know how many times was him saying "I should have done....." In this case it was stick with the run AGAIN where he literally said, the day before the game we have to be patient and try to establish some sort of run.
My concern is not that the players are doing everything they can and want to win as much as anyone else. My concern is whether we are putting them in the best position to win and that is what Tony and all coaches are paid the big bucks for.

Solid man, good coach. In over his head on play calling and offensive game plan. Dabo has a difficult time pulling trigger on friends. Same with Caldwell. There is a reason offensive line is small and slow compared to Bama and UGa, and a reason receivers are having hard time getting open. To compete at high level, need an offensive minded coordinator and a new Oline approach.

Sep 9, 2021, 12:37 AM

It was a brutally embarrassing game to be sure. It was embarrassing only because the coaching staff set the bar high and have delivered year after year after year. It's pathetic that there are those, who don't have the first freaking clue about anything, who would trash someone over a single football game. There are many who don't know or don't remember what so many of us have lived through over the years with Clemson football and therefore have little or no appreciation for how good our program has become. How sad is your life if the best you can do is trash a football coach who has given you his very best and helped deliver 2 national championships?...and has to depend on kids to do what they have been told under the watch of millions of viewers. To be real, this is a rebuilding year. There will likely be some ugly times in comparison to what we've been used to over the last decade. It happens. Let the guys coach the team and look at this with the perspective that the players are learning and doing their best. It's sad that the term "Clemson fan" gets linked to some cowardly "Johnny come lately", tag along, don't give a dime to IPTAY, redneck ignorant people who jump on the bandwagon of success pretending they know how to coach football from their mundane, and pathetic experience. For those who participated in the childish displays and temper tantrums, grow the he!! up! For all the real Clemson fans, thank you for being honorable, supportive, dedicated people who have persevered through the growing up process of one of the best programs in the nation!
