So students can get season tickets in lower deck for $225

Apr 17, 2016, 9:38 PM

and they are complaining? Seriously?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would love that deal........... add it into the tuition!!

Apr 17, 2016, 9:41 PM

nm

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, Alumni are complaining for multiple reasons...

Apr 17, 2016, 11:15 PM

1) This decision could negatively impact our pipeline of future donors. There are repercussions that should be considered. Smart money should focus on turning students into life-long Clemson fans.

2) Part of what I pay for in season tickets is about the atmosphere. I want a rockin' crazy student section. Tarnishing this negatively impacts fans (and players).

3) Many other schools who have implemented these types of changes have incurred a decline in their student sections.

The students aren't upset, but the Alumni who are looking at the bigger picture are.

Why would they stop coming? This is a great deal.... ask any

Apr 17, 2016, 11:27 PM

fan!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have a feeling that you are the type

Apr 17, 2016, 11:48 PM

Of fan that has his life together. Sure, as a fan and not a broke college student, I would love that price for a season ticket. Now, if i were given free tickets and then was told that I have to pay $225 that I don't have as a college student to have a seat (top deck sucks, let's be honest), I would be pretty upset.

Nothing is "free". I paid 33k tuition a year in out of state fees. Better be included with.

Ok. I think you know what I mean.

Call it complementary.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Data says otherwise

Apr 18, 2016, 1:48 AM [ in reply to Why would they stop coming? This is a great deal.... ask any ]

Why has this lowered student attendance? To be clear, the universities do sell all of the tickets, so the money is gained. The problem is schools consistently see about a 20% drop in student attendance by year three.

There are various reasons, but when you can't sit next to your friends, can't take a date, a large chunk of your friends don't go, etc. it's not as fun.

Let's also point out that being a first timer on the hill is insanely better than seeing the game from the upper deck. They are two totally different experiences!

My point is other schools have instituted these and they have resulted in students being less involved. The scarier part is this has resulted in lower donations from graduates compared to previous years (looking at similar age groups prior to implementation). Granted there aren't more than about 10 years of data for this so it could easily be economy related.

Apr 18, 2016, 10:46 PM

This! ^^

If the answer is to charge students for tickets then we are asking the wrong question.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah as a FAN with money to spend on tickets, I'm sure

Apr 18, 2016, 5:53 AM [ in reply to Why would they stop coming? This is a great deal.... ask any ]

it is a great deal. Not so much for a broke student though.

GO TIGERS

Did you read those articles? The only correlations they made to students

Apr 18, 2016, 1:17 PM [ in reply to No, Alumni are complaining for multiple reasons... ]

Not attending games had to do with either a perceived weak opponent, the time of the game being an early kick, or students wanting to have wifi and watch it on TV. Nowhere do they mention the price of a ticket being a factor in students not attending games. Hell, the problems they outline in these articles, we have seen them for years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Correct, they did not specifically mention price

Apr 18, 2016, 10:06 PM

Schools across the country who have charged students for tickets are struggling with student attendance. The linked schools were examples where they charged students. Here are links specific to ticket prices being a factor:

If you care about Clemson's atmosphere, I think you ought to take a hard look. Brian Kelly and his shocked face are classic. A partially filled student section doesn't earn this response. Think about the games we might have lost without a raucous home crowd.

After the 2011 season, Clemson did a study on trying to improve student attendance. This was successful as student attendance has increased. While most will say this was due to the success on the field, 2011 was a great season and yet they saw a decline. When evaluating other schools and their declining attendance, cost has consistently been a major factor.

No doubt, to many students the fee won't be a problem. There

Apr 18, 2016, 5:55 AM

will be some who simply can't afford it despite the relative affluence of our society.

That ongoing discussions are now occurring between the administration and students begs the question, why weren't they held before the announcement? Rather, it appears the plan was tossed out along with a number to gauge reaction, and to me that's bass ackwards.

If the plan ensues, then I believe every student, despite each's financial circumstances, should have an equal opportunity to engage, even in the form of deferred payments, if necessary. Otherwise, there are the free tickets for those who opt out.

Costs of running big time college football exploding.

How about NCAA imposition of coaching staff salary caps?

Apr 18, 2016, 6:59 AM

Yup! Same thing I was thinking.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

amen!! $250 for lower area tix is an incredible

Apr 18, 2016, 7:16 AM

Bargain. Do they realize how much one must give to Iptay to have seats like that after graduation? Incredible bargain!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No and they never will

Apr 18, 2016, 10:12 PM

Schools who implement ticket prices like this see less alumni joining programs like IPTAY.

Thus thousands of students never understand the incredible deal... b/c they end up not caring about football. Oh and this also proves to negatively impact general donations.

But other schools are doing this (only a few have switched back to free) and so it MUST be a brilliant idea!

Re: So students can get season tickets in lower deck for $225

Apr 18, 2016, 7:33 AM

Well, I’ve been reading the comments and rebuttals for the last several days on student ticket prices. Obviously, there are many different types of people that go to the ball games, from various socio-economic levels.

On the one hand, you have the Iptay members that pay thousands of dollars just for the opportunity to buy season tickets, wondering what all the fuss is about for paying $32 to attend a Clemson Football Game. Then you have the students. Yes, there are many that work to pay their way through Clemson, but the majority come here on Scholarships and /or have Mom and Pop pay for practically everything they have (tuition, books, car, allowance, apartment, etc.). Myself, I was at Clemson in the early 70’s, got $10.00 a week in the mail every Friday to live on, so I probably would have never made a game back then if we had to pay.

The best alternative would be to add $5.00 to the price of each game ticket. This would pay for all the seats in the student sections and Clemson would still receive the revenue it’s looking for. Don’t get me wrong, it already costs me about $1000 per game for the wife and I each year, so I really don’t need to keep adding to that cost, but with what we already spend on Clemson Football, $5.00 per game is minimal knowing the students can come and enjoy the football season.

You also have to remember that DRad is here for two reasons, create revenue and spend it as fast as he can. His legacy will be to build as much as he can at Clemson and raise as much revenue in the process. It’s all about the money.

Anyway, hope they come to a reasonable solution.

Will this now open a secondary market for selling/buying

Apr 18, 2016, 9:12 AM

lower deck tickets?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only to other students

Apr 18, 2016, 10:13 PM

However, they are still debating on how this will be implemented.
