No More Contact Sports (FB, Soccer, Boxing) in 15-20 years..

according to Dr Amen who has done more brain imaging xrays (150,000+) than any medical doctor in the world.
He says a blow to the head, with the brain being as soft as butter, and hitting against the jagged hard surface of the inner skull is as lethal or more than Cocaine overuse in the long run.
Remember he’s the physician that the NFL, because of pressure from the Player’s Union, was hired to take 300 images of former players (Terry Bradshaw being one) and almost 100% of these imaging xrays showed slight to extreme brain damage due to previous hits and/or concussions that could have occurred from middle grade, to college, to the pros.
Thus, Dr Amen predicts government & citizen groups will force the issue sooner than later and cause contact sports to change radically.
We at the college fan level actually witness these head injuries live more & more as they happen..with the ejection of our favorite or more talented players..the player staggering, the injury tents on the sidelines, taking time off, etc.
And, he stated No Soccer Ball should be struck by the head!
What’s your thoughts on this situation?

I mean it went from a leather helmet with no face mask to what we have today. Why can’t it get more absorbent to blows even if it has to get less cool looking?

I think you may get some groups who "call for it" in 20 years! Certainly, the events here in Rock Hill with Phillip Adams were horrific and make you want to be proactive to stop it.
But, unless you also stop, "mining activity, underwater welding, race car driving, wooden roller coaster rides, and a bevy of other activities they will be hard-pressed in succeeding"!
Mainly because "if someone is willing to pay to watch it and someone is willing to take the risk to participate" who are other people to tell them what to do with their body? Not going to get into Roe v. Wade but; if people are willing to put themselves through that and others are willing to watch it. I see it having a hard time happening!
Big risk! Big reward too!
Besides - what will be next? Will they(groups who want to protect you from you) also decide that driving an automobile is too unsafe for you as well? Because people have traumatic injuries or die from that daily. Or what about going into the military? As a Marine, I signed up "knowing I might very well lose my life in protection of the United States"! I did so at my own peril. Now, if they want to stop wars from happening, that would be a more constructive use of time! We don't need to go down the line of bodily harm that causes including PTE.

LBB - the only reason the people who say it won't be around "could potentially be correct is the lack of new players"! What I mean is, "high school insurance claims would likely get so high only a few daring schools would have teams! Or the **"Liability risk"** to have a team at middle school, high school, college is too great schools choose not to field them.
That to me might be more of what could derail football.

They need get rid of women's volleyball then. I read a few years back that volleyball is the #1 cause of concussions in girl's sports. Soccer #2 and basketball #3. Maybe all sports should be dropped and just do video games. I feel so sorry for the kids these days.

I Fell more sorry for America. This is becoming a sick nation, and a whole lot of it is created by University and College professors. You can think that sounds crazy, but it's factual. These enlightened educators teach everything but what should be taught, our Nation will suffer from these "progressive" individuals.

I would also throw in: "not watching/supporting if it offends you as a human being watching other human beings do what they choose to do"!
It would be different if someone was forcing people to do it, right? But, no one is forcing people to play contact sports. And, every sport can potentially be a contact sport! Ever see a line-drive hit a player in the head or someone in foul territory. I have - it's not a good sight.

Bill you could be right. Although a more dangerous game is what we all grew up playing, sandlot tackle football. Count me in for 3 concussions playing, one of which was a knock out. I guess that explains a lot. ">
If they really want to save children's lives they need to outlaw all backyard swimming pools. In-ground, above-ground, blow up, wadding, all types of homeowner swimming pools. No swimming at the beach, the lake, or in streams and rivers. Only allow lifeguard on duty public pools.
It will also save the planet. Look up a birds-eye view of Orange County CA, nothing but backyard pool, after pool, after pool. Not a great idea in an arid region desperate for water.

HillBTiger - LOL! Exactly!
And, I agree 100% about the backyard pools. You can post all the no running signs you want and "bam"! Also, if your pool is deep enough to dive in or even shallow dive in - "you will inevitably hit the water wrong" and rattle your gray matter! Even if you don't hit the bottom - you are breaking the surface of that water using your body!
Motorcycles - will they be banned too? If football goes, certainly Motorbikes have to go as I personally know or know of over 7 people who have lost their lives on them!

I can believe it.
You wonder if the growing crowd would also want to stop those who ride?

damage. It’s just not that big of an impact. No where near getting your bell rung in football. And ultimately, if it is proven to be substantially damaging (and again, I just don’t see a lot of retired professional soccer players drooling on themselves from all the head trauma), the sport could easily survive eliminating headers.

all the foolish reliance on logic... if logic were truly the currency of such debates this world could be a much better place. sadly, we are being given a glimpse into a future that will be forced upon us.

If people actually care about long-term health
Jan 14, 2022, 11:28 PM

we will either stop playing some of these sports, or drastically change the rules.
I don’t think the average fan really cares about player safety, nor do I think the average player is thinking about long-term risks. But the evidence is there for CTE and other risks as well.
The pressure will have to come from concerned parents who don’t let their kids play youth sports. The number of kids playing youth football in many areas has decreased substantially. It will be interesting to see what happens.

A helmet can be made that works well, but it is much larger than today's headgear. It will look funny and will slow down players. But it's probably the future. Bobble heads on the field running around trying to balance with their big heads.

Well we cancelled or nearly cancelled seasons over COVID which presented something like a 0.003% risk to college aged kids and far less than that for athletes. With football the nonCovid risk was much greater. So how did it ever make sense to play in the first place?
