brush into my squash blooms to try and get some production. It feels wrong. It feels like mama is going to bust around the corner and yell "Oh dear Lord! Just wait till your father gets home!"

the property line near a small wooded area but the homeowners association will not allow it.
Guess they don't like flowers in the neighborhood. I haven't seen many bees around either this spring.

My grandfather did bee keeping but he passed before I was born. I often wish I had been around to learn about it from him.

I had a couple of hives. Lost them to a combination of bears and those moths.
We have a strawberry grower across the road. He generally puts out hives. He didn't this year. They pick about twice a week for a couple of hours, as opposed to all day, every day when the hives were there.

Have not seen a decline in carpenter bees this year. Holy Moly I have trapped or forehanded with a tennis racquet over 100 this year. I know they are great pollinators but I refuse to let them destroy my house.

I have plenty of Carpenter Bees. But they aren't pollinating. They're busy eating my house.

There’s been a steady decline in bees and seems like it gets worse each year, especially in more populated areas. Thanks to development and people having Mosquito Joe come and spray their yards. People don’t realize the devastating effects those insecticides are having on our bees, ladybugs, all the helpful insects.

how dangerous it was to walk barefoot in the grass because you'd get stung by bees - they were everywhere! It's sad not to see them now.
And I don't see lightening bugs at dusk anymore like in the old days.

I've had enough bees to pollinate my squash (Laurens County) but I'm out in the country surrounded by woods. I wish someone in my family would learn beekeeping or I could find someone to do beekeeping for shares on my land. Definitely need to increase the number of beekeepers all over the country!

That is a sign of lack of pollination. The plant will produce the squash with a bloom. When the bloom isn’t pollinated, the plant will essentially abandon it and not waste energy on it. When the vegetable isn’t pollinated it will not grow and will begin to wither from the bloom end.
If you want to pollinate by hand, get a tiny paintbrush (craft) or a q-tip. Take the pollen from a male bloom (no squash attached) and put the pollen on the bloom with the squash. It is important to get pollen on all the pieces inside the squash bloom. A partially pollinated bloom doesn’t do great. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there. It isn’t difficult, but it takes time.
Also, each plant doesn’t always produce a male bloom at the same time as a female. Just find one on another plant. But as your squash struggles to pollinate, it will produce more male blooms.

Yeah I really wish that mosquito squad crap would be outlawed. Sure it kills the mosquitoes for a little while, but it does more harm to pollinators than anything else. It’s much easier just to put some citronella torches out and spray a little repellent on your body...
