Can we stop with the balloons???

Sep 29, 2016, 11:11 AM

I haven't put much thought into it until last weeks game but I think that we have enough pollution already. Where do those things end up? They pop once they hit a certain part of the atmosphere and then down comes the litter! Just sayin...

not a problem on that front. They head up toward Charlotte and land in yards and woods with little impact to the environment. Now Tailgating - that produces some trash.

Re: No...

Sep 29, 2016, 11:49 AM [ in reply to No... ]

But there is absolutely nothing conclusive in the link you posted...

"We now know that balloons normally degrade pretty well (except in water), and that they have the potential to reach the ocean, though it’s improbable. Animals will consume balloon remnants, but it’s not clear whether the fragments present a long-term danger to wildlife."

Why measure distance to Atlantic Ocean? Plenty of rivers and lakes closer to Clemson than the ocean for balloons to land in and hinder the degradation process. Plenty of chance for these to wind their way into the ocean from this point.

Wildlife impact is still being considered but we definitely know they eat the fragments. That doesn't sound conclusive to me.

We all see the 'Palmetto Pride/Litter Trashes Everyone' signs around the state, but when it comes to litter that goes up and out of sight AND relates to a gameday 'tradition', by God we will not be denied!! Why is this suddenly any different than littering in any other way? Do people toss biodegradable items out of their windows while driving along the interstate and assume it's "ok" because it's biodegradable? No, because it's still littering.

I love Clemson and its unique traditions as much as the next person, but really, it's not as absurd to question if this is still something we should do in today's day and age as some people make it out to be.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, there's nothing conclusive, so continue.***

How about this...I just don't give a crap about

Sep 29, 2016, 12:24 PM [ in reply to Re: No... ]

the environment. I'd rather see a Clemson tradition continue than care about some stupid bird eating part of a balloon. If the bird is too dumb to realize it's not something it should eat then the dumb thing should be wiped off the planet anyway. If everyone weren't such pansies and willing to bow down to all the stupid hippie environmental and PETA groups, I'd encourage the school to use some sort of balloon that was guaranteed to last at least 200 years. That way when you're on the lake or at the beach and you see a piece of an orange balloon you can be reminded of Clemson football...and who doesn't need more reminders of Clemson football besides stupid hippies and communists?

I'm in favor of less recycling and I believe forests should be clear cut to make room for more landfills. Why should I be asked to sort my garbage into two separate bins and pay more to do so? I say more fracking, more oil drilling, more oil pipelines and more coal mining. Those things make life cheaper and more convenient for all of us.

So if you worry about the impact of a Clemson tradition on the environment, move to Berkeley California or something where you can join in meaningless protests and hug trees all day. I'll stay here and continue to use more styrofoam and enjoy Clemson football as they release hundreds of balloons into the air turning the sky orange.

They are biodegradable. The average distance one of them travels is around 27 miles. Although a couple have been known to go over 200. It really isn't a big deal, doesn't really hurt anything. It's a great Clemson tradition.

To all the d-bags that feel this way - We release balloons 7 times per year.

If you really feel that this is significantly harming the environment (even though much smarter people have thought of this issue way before you and it has been addressed) then I hope that you are driving an electric car or riding a bike, using nothing plastic, using clean energy for your homes, cloth diapers for your kids, etc...

Otherwise just shut the he!! up.

Coal or natural gas usually. OMG! Al Gore, save us!
Solar? Solar panel production pollutes the environment.
Wind? Turbines slice and dice endangered birds.
Hydro? Dams cause loss of habitat and affect downstream ecosystems.
Nuclear? What to do with the radioactive waste?

From Clemson games in my early childhood was the balloon release. My dad started taking me to Clemson games when I was about 4 and back then you could pick up balloons at the entrance and release them yourself. I always loved letting go of a few balloons when the cannon went off. I wish it was still like that.
