Is it fair to say Trevor Lawrence and Kelly Bryant looked pretty equal?

Sep 2, 2018, 9:49 AM

I think the most notable thing is Trevor Lawrence arm strength. As well as his quick release. He could hit every inch of the feild. You get him in a rhythm he’s going to be dangerous with his arm.

Kelly Bryant is a force to be reackoned with running the football. And he can pass decently to. He’s not as good passing the ball like Trevor Lawrence. But is good enough and can occasionally hit the deep ball to.

Both QBs complement each other well. Best case scenario both continue to play in every game. And both continue to improve. Both guys is what gives us the best chance to win.

We could get into the playoffs with any of the 3. We can only beat Bama with one.

Screw Calford.

They might have looked somewhat equal on paper.

Sep 2, 2018, 9:51 AM

But I think it was pretty clear that our offense was much more fluid and efficient with Lawrence at QB.

Yes, important stat (5 possessions each)

TL - 4 TD, 1FG
KB - 2 TD, 1 FG

They were almost identical in attempts, completions and yards. Add in KB's rushing yards and he had more total offense.

KB 9-15 127 yds. 44 yds rushing on 5 attempts. 1 passing TD, 1 rushing TD.

TL 10-16 137 yds. 1 yard rushing on 3 attempts. 3 passing TD's.

But 100% of the time, the team that scores more POINTS wins the game. TL 31, KB 17.

Yeah...KB was also given three or four opportunities at 4th

Sep 2, 2018, 10:51 AM [ in reply to Yes, important stat (5 possessions each) ]

down to extend drives. TL wasnt(TL really didnt need that though I guess). TL took two drives 90+ yards for TDs. KB started a drive in the redzone and couldnt punch it in.

I think on passing plays play both of them ... direct snap to TL and let KB run different short routes .
On running plays , direct snap to KB and let TL take on a few blitzers in the blocking scheme . Nothing settles down a young QB like knocking helmets with a defensive tackle .
I can't see any reason to not do this .

No they are not equal. TL is better and here's why.

Sep 2, 2018, 10:07 AM

Good teams will continue to stack the line against KB and force him to throw. He runs way too hot and cold with his passing. TL on the other hand can stretch the field and hit every inch of it as you pointed out. While TL is not necessarily a threat to run, his presence opens up our running game much more than with KB. The offense looks complete with TL under center. I was at the game yesterday and I don't think the competition is even close but I support our coaching staff with how they want to play this situation.

Re: Is it fair to say Trevor Lawrence and Kelly Bryant looked pretty equal?

Sep 2, 2018, 10:09 AM

In results? Yes. Method ... not even close.

Trevor throws a frozen rope and can do things with his arm that Kelly can only dream of. On the other hand, Kelly can do things with his legs that Trevor will never be able to do. This is going to drive defensive coordinators insane.

Re: Is it fair to say Trevor Lawrence and Kelly Bryant looked pretty equal?

Sep 2, 2018, 8:00 PM

It really won't in that a DC will know that there will be run first with KB and with TL there is the threat of a very dangerous passing capability to our outstanding receivers, and a new threat of one of our very gifted backs getting more chances to show their talent.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the run game

Sep 2, 2018, 10:03 PM

Also looked better with Trevor too. Furman could no longer play man while stacking the box. I think Trevor has already shown that he can make #### near any throw and can do it really quick. I really do like Kelly and his personality but to beat teams in the playoffs it’s gonna take a QB that can throw the ball to all of the offensive weapons.

Re: I think the run game

Sep 3, 2018, 8:58 AM

To borrow a well worn phrase Tony Elliot likes to use in defending KB and the same tired old line he used too often to describe Cole Stoudt, TL "gives us the best chance to win" our games, and he surely gives us the best chance to feature the rest of our very talented offensive weapons. JMHO

Sep 2, 2018, 10:11 AM

Yes, pretty equal.

So If that’s true we need to give TL more playing time. KB is a senior and is at or near his potential. TL is a freshman in his first college game and the sky is the limit. Only way to improve overall QB play is to give TL more game experience.

No not at all when you take into account Trevor literally just got here in January. Kelly is a senior and should be light years ahead of Trevor. But he is not, Kelly’s ceiling is Trevor’s basement if you will.

This! Although, with TL as QB and bringing in KB as another run/pass threat as a RB, it opens up a new and very difficult threat for Defensive Coordinators to manage.

Neither did anything to clearly separate from the other

Sep 2, 2018, 10:18 AM

yesterday. Physically, their different strengths are obvious. The less obvious difference is in experience at this level, and in this offense, and how that translates to effectiveness on the field. They both were very effective yesterday. I don't know if there will be any point this season where one or the other gets every single snap in a game, but I believe it's just a matter of time beforer that experience gap becomes less and less significant and TL starts, or at least gets most of the snaps. Bottom line, this will play out and we are in great shape at QB.

Re: Neither did anything to clearly separate from the other

Sep 2, 2018, 8:08 PM

I gave you a TU, because I agree that both are very good weapons. I do think a TL led Offense offers more opportunities to utilize all our weapons more efficiently and more effectively. Our RB's are plenty capable of running the FB without the QB being the main offensive rushing weapon.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trevor is a gunslinger. Laser cannon for an arm.

Sep 2, 2018, 10:18 AM

KB threw the nice floater downfield but the receiver had to make the play to catch it. KB has the big game experience but Trevor is going to be Watson-good very shortly. I think we will see obvious separation of abilities as the season progresses. For A&M, let them have to prepare for both QB's. Run some stunts where you have both in the game and KB plays as receiver or something. Force the defense into confusion and have them burn timeouts. This could work for a while.

The bottom line to me is that we have a "good problem" to have but this should sort itself out real soon based on game performance and stats.

Next week will be the more useable barometer. If TL can show he belongs when the lights are hot then it’ll be undeniable who gives us the best chance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no - I don’t think so.

Sep 2, 2018, 10:38 AM

While both made mistakes, I would take the mistakes that Lawrence made.

Bryant got excited under pressure and threw some horrible balls off the wrong foot, missing badly. His reads were questionable and at least one of his completions, he should not have thrown the ball.
Lawrence made some rookie mistakes. But in film room , they should be correctable.
Stats don’t always tell the right story. Yes, stats are about even.
I was clearly disappointed with the continued message that Bryant had gotten much better.
I do think experience means a lot and was expecting a calm, poised , efficient Bryant. I did not get that.
It is my opinion, that his upside is limited , while Lawrence’s is huge.
As many of you have posted, the other teams will load the box for Bryant and from what I saw yesterday, our o line is not going to create holes, thus putting it back on the QB to force linebackers and safeties to back up.
Can Bryant hit enough passes to punish this alignment? Can Lawrence?
I think we know the answer to that.
I can live with rookie mistakes.
Kudos to bryant, in packages, he can shine, just not against a team with similar talent who can load a box.
No matter what, our o line has to help the running game. It was Furman and other than 2-3 runs, our ability to run was poor.
Just my opinion anyway. Sitting at my boat (REEL TIGER) btw. Enjoying life, enjoying the win, enjoying college football season being back.
Cheers!

Sep 2, 2018, 10:54 AM

Want to see our OL do some mauling next week no matter who is taking the snaps. But if they don’t block well in a game, it will make for an interesting decision.

Lawrence can get rid of the ball quick, but some of his freshmen mistakes is holding onto the ball too long and getting happy feet.

Bryant gives you a chance with his feet but honestly yesterday felt he hit the longer throws better than the short to medium range stuff.

Think right now you play both and see who has the hot hand on that day.

Maybe but I think mistakes or a sub par performance

Sep 2, 2018, 10:50 AM

by Bryant gets us beat quicker than one by Lawrence. 2 of Bryant's throws yesterday should have been picked. When Lawrence missed, here missed where nobody was going to get the ball. Now the unknown for me is changing protections or plays at the line of scrimmage. Don't know how far ahead Bryant might be with that

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Maybe but I think mistakes or a sub par performance

Sep 2, 2018, 11:37 AM

I believe Lawrence forces the defense to play differently because of his quick release and amazing arm. With that said, Lawrence had several foul ups in the back field yesterday and that can be costly against a team like TAM. Perhaps that is because of a lack of experience with this offense. He and the running backs were not on the same page yesterday. I’m betting some quality time will be spent correcting that this week! As a non coach, I think the Tigers are going to have to get rid of the ball quickly to keep pressure off the O line. Slow developing plays aren’t going to beat good defensive teams. Without question the Tigers have the receivers to play a fast tempo game and the RBs are all top quality. The Tight End play yesterday. was especially encouraging to me.

Defensively, the cornerbacks and safetys yesterday ran with the Furman receivers and did a good job but they failed to watch the ball and that resulted in some interference calls that the offense gets most of the time. That’s about the only negative thing I saw yesterday on that side of the ball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Maybe but I think mistakes or a sub par performance

Sep 2, 2018, 12:19 PM

I saw that once yesterday. Dabo said that should have been a handoff so that seemed to be on the rb (choice I believe). Didn't see any other miscommunications. Thought he was putting a little too much mustard on some of the short passes early but settled in and took control of the offense from there.

I think each quarterback had good results in situations that required his particular skill set. It's up to our coaches to make sure the right one is in for any given situation.
