Nick Saban: Redshirt-year

games would 'enhance development' LOL

"Saban's SEC coaching counterparts were also all for this proposal becoming a reality. Mississippi State's Dan Mullen said it could help with player safety by adding to roster numbers toward the middle and end of the season. This way, if a position became thin due to injuries toward the latter part of the season, coaches could insert a true freshman who might be showing signs of being ready to take on actual playing time without wasting an entire year of eligibility on that player."

"The more you can play, the better," Orgeron said. "This is basketball on grass nowadays. You have some offenses out there trying to run 100 plays. The game has doubled since when we played, so I think the more guys you can without burning a year would be great."

"LSU coach Ed Orgeron took the proposal a step further, offering his support for getting rid of redshirts altogether and allowing players to have five years of eligibility -- for which some have advocated for years."

As we have seen NCAA rules are used as guide
Like the 85 total scholarship
Twenty-five is the NCAA limit of new scholarship players that a team can sign

I like the five year too. A redshirt year is one of the three calendar years till declaring pro for the NFL . You might as well get three years out of all the players.

Tommy Bowden touted 5 to play 5

the entire time he was here.

If the player is on scholarship and can use that scholarship for five years, let him play. The current rules make no sense.

Agree 100%

Simplify the rules. Eliminate red shirting and "medical" red shirting. If a guy gets injured, that's the breaks (no pun intended). Also need to eliminate "Grey" shirting which is a BS recruiting ploy the SEC uses to brief up their recruiting numbers every year.

I don't necessarily agree, but I get it. You can get reps for guys you would normally redshirt. Give them a play or two in a big game to get their feet wet while also being able to have great athletes like Isaiah Simmons and Shaq Smith on kick coverage as well.

I just don't see a situation where you would even need that much depth, though. Unless you were absolutely blowing someone out.

Do we really need LaSamuel Davis, who would have probably been like a 5th string weakside end in 2016-2017 out there rushing the QB? Probably not.

The reason I like the 5 year rule is a situation like Mac Alexander. He redshirted his first year and played only two years at Clemson. You will be more inclined to play a freshman who can help at any point if no redshirt rule exists.

Mac only red shirted his freshmen year due to injury. If it wasn't for his nagging groin injury he would have played and probably started as a true freshmen. A guy like Mac is going to be gone after 3 years no matter what so it wouldn't make any sense to red shirt that player anyways.

Yeah, usually those kinds of guys will avoid a redshirt though because coaches know they are more valuable playing even 30 snaps on special teams where their talent could shine through on just one game changing play, rather than stash them on the bench where they aren't on the field at all.

We may see that bite us in the butt this year if Clelin Ferrell blows up and goes pro after his RS Sophomore year. But that's a chance you take sometimes.

Usually injuries cause that issue.

I definitely like the proposal and hope it passes.

I think for player safety they should cap offensive plays to 85..... They are only allowed to punt from that point. It's all for later safety right?
