Re: NFL teams rip Browns re: D.Watson contract - Boo Hoo

Just what one would expect from the NFL ... a team gets aggressive and signs a player to a big deal, and the other NFL execs whine and complain that their business model for labor has been shot to Hades.

If I'm the owner of a NFL franchise (and to the doubters about my soon to be worthiness, I've been promoted from Junior dishwasher at Red Lobster to Senior dishwasher and Red Lobster, so I'm on my way up), then if the Browns win big in 2022 then I'm firing my GM if he made the 'Browns shouldn't a done it' comment.

situation and status.

It is going to be damaging for other teams that can't front that much guaranteed money.

NFL owners are greedy and selfish as h-e-c-k. Other sports have fully guaranteed contracts and their players are NOT colliding at full speed.

So be it fat cats…ain’t that many Patrick Mahomes, Dashaun Watson, Josh Allen type players walking threw their doors.

I like how they claimed he wasn't a Tier 1 QB

Looks up last season DW4 played - Tier 1 and lead the league in passing and ypc. Also leads the NFL in passing completions

... all of this despite playing in Houston.

Who would have thought that a player that got abused by a dishonest management/owner wouldn't place an emphasis on not having that happen again.

Groundbreaking contacts always cause the same reaction. You know what else always happens? Within two years, said contract is no longer a big deal.

It was heading this way for QBs long before the Browns paid Deshaun.

I have no sympathy for NFL owners. Structurally, they have the easiest time posting insane profits of any ownership group.

Whether NFL execs like this or not this was always the issue with Deshaun, and the real struggle between him and management. This was always about the role and importance of the QB in the NFL. The NFL owners, for obvious reasons, want the QB to remain merely another employee. The reality is that it is now otherwise.

Like it or not, the NFL is increasingly a QB-centric league, and increasingly it's obvious that as long as you've got your franchise guy and can successfully build around him, you can replace all the other components - linemen, receivers, RB's, TE's, and yes, even position coaches and OC's - and be successful, as long as you are calling plays tailored to that QB's skillset and strengths. (Well, as long as that QB is good enough.)

Was it Bill Belichick who was responsible for the Patriot dynasty, or was it Tom Brady? Well, Brady did win a Super Bowl with Tampa...Belichick has not come close since.

Like it or not, elite QB's have begun to realize their value...which is probably even greater now than the head coach. Cleveland just made it official that they're placing all their money on DW4...and letting it all ride on him.

The other owners can squawk all they want. I guess we'll see who's right here.

I never saw anyone get rich by betting against Deshaun, though.

Think Belichek is heading in the right direction with the Alabama kid. He had Cam Newton in the year before and not sure anyone would win with that guy, but did watch some of their games last season and was impressed with him being a rookie. Wish TL would have landed there.

I'm guessing the Cleveland Browns couldn't care any less what those NFL executives and "talent evaluators" say or think.

Based on Cleveland's success with QBs historically...

I think they've made it clear they don't care what anyone else thinks, or how they think, or even understand what a QB is (other than revolving doorman).

Browns had been eliminated from consideration.

They had to go big or go home. They went big. If it doesn't work out...someone will be sent home.

Sometimes I wonder if Cleveland’s executives use a crayon and coloring book to run the operation’s of their football team. I love DW but no NFL player is worth $230 million dollars I believe it said a guaranteed contract plus giving away so many 1st and 2nd round draft picks.

IMO a psychiatrist needs to evaluate who ever approved this deal. The Texans will be laughing about this deal for years.
